'The cutest getaway cottage ever'
That's what Better Homes and Gardens magazine called this little retreat when it was featured a few years back.
We call it the the perfect place for TWO Lovers, TWO Friends, Couples, Sisters, Brothers... Rediscover the bond that brought you close in the first place, connect like you've always wanted to, gain a new perspective with that special person in your life.
Celebrate? Escape? No matter where you are in life, some alone-time away can make all the difference in the world. Intrigued? read on...
TWO is located on a secluded 1 acre wooded property, on the northern end of Harbor Country in the town of Sawyer. The Warren Dunes 1900 acres is right next door, and the beach is about a four block walk. A produce market and butcher shop are on each corner, so fresh provisions are never far away. Oh, and the incredible sunsets... It might just be the best memory of your stay!
TWO is a special little place. It has a soulful feeling. Maybe it's the 100 year old trees surrounding the house, perhaps it's the original pine floors and architectural details that date back to the 1920's. Charm yes, but this is not your typical 'cottage.' The house had a complete architect-designed remodel in 1997 and has been kept true to its principles ever since. Private hot tub, screened porch, it's all here for you to enjoy. The moment you walk through the door, you'll be reminded of what a great little hideaway you have found!
Known as 'LePin Cottage' (cottage in the pines) this humble abode was built in the 1920's and was used as a grape pickers' shack for the seasonal harvest. The home had no running water or electricity, and occupants were resolved to use the (still on property) outhouse when nature called. As the area developed and the vineyards moved inland, the house was abandoned and remained an empty shell for many years. In 1995 the house was purchased by an architect and his wife, and they set out to make the 'Cottage in the Pines' their family retreat. The renovation was nothing short of amazing. The house was put up on stilts and a new foundation was installed. The entire roof and joists were removed to make way for the new second floor, and an accompanying shed was located in nearby Indiana and transported to the property. The original windows and pine floors were saved, as was the footprint of the structure. The results were stunning. So much so that the home caught the attention of Better Homes and Gardens magazine, which paid homage to the renovation with a six page feature in the July of 1998 issue. Today the story continues. Each and every weekend, new memories and stories are created, as couples, and friends relax and enjoy this special place.

We love to travel; been all over the country. We consider ourselves to have a keen sense of what works. Also we often travel with our dog. While we have been to many places, we always love to come back to this this little cottage. It is a calming sanctuary, and we're sure after a stay here you will feel the same way.
Eileen purchased this cottage in 1997
Sawyer is one of those great destinations, that once you find it, you hope not too many others follow suit. The restaurants, shops, beaches, culture and all around vibe are unmatched. This little place in the woods has been described as being a storybook cottage, and we couldn't agree more. It oozes with cuteness and is the ultimate escape from the everyday.
The house is super clean and updated, not your typical musty cottage. The place is compact and efficient, but does not feel cramped. The property is a gorgeous one-acre secluded, wooded, property that is a very short walk to the Warren Dunes. It is the real deal when it comes to the Michigan cottage experience. The house has an antique wood burning stove that is perfect on those cool and winter evenings. To sum it up, the cottage is romantic, the perfect place for two! A great little hideaway!
Thanks for the note. We had a wonderful time, thank you. The house was
great and exactly what we needed. We'd love to come back at some
Let me start with the stairs to the sleeping area. They are very steep and the treads are short so only part of an adult foot fits on the stair. The pictures do not really show how steep they are. The sleeping is on the second floor and the only bathroom is on the 1st floor. We stayed for 4 nights in mid August and enjoyed the house and the area. The house is very clean and well maintained. We used the hot tub and found it clean. We spent one evening watching a movie from the provided DVD's. There are also books and magazines to keep you busy. The owners keep dishes, pots and pans as well as many other kitchen items for guests to use. We spent time hiking the sand dunes which are walking distance from the house. One can also walk to the beach if desired. If you drive to the beach there is a daily fee of $9 per car. We went up and down Red Arrow highway to visit many of the other towns along the lake. In Sawyer we ate at the Clean Plate for breakfast and the brewery for one of our dinners, both were very good. The best food we had was at Journeyman distillery's restaurant. The pizza there is amazing. If in St. Joseph's stop at Cabana's in downtown for the best ice cream you will ever have. We visited Round Barn brewery, winery and distillery one afternoon for some tastings, I would recommend. The market and produce stand in downtown Sawyer is a must stop as well. We enjoyed the house and would book again if traveling to this area.
We arrived to a beautifully kept home with lots of character. Our weekend was somewhat hectic with an Ironman triathlon race upcoming, but the stillness of the surrounding area and comforts of home made it much more relaxing. We used the kitchen for almost every meal over our stay and it worked out perfectly for two people who love to cook. Although it rained a bit, the outdoor areas were great to use. Honestly, the steep staircase wasn't an issue for us as the rest of the house and outdoor areas were used most of the time. I recommend a stay here for anyone interested in the area, especially the Warren Dunes park next door!
Cottage is very comfortable, clean, and was perfect for my family. Love the location... Easy access to highway 94 as we went back in forth to st. Joseph. We plan on booking again ! Highly recommend this cozy cottage
The house was perfect and peaceful, we really enjoyed the hot tub and fire pit, the screened in porch etc.. It was a wonderful location to the beach and fruit stand/pizza. Close to Journeyman's Distillery and the Greenbush Brewing Co. Would stay here again!!
This was exactly what we were looking for! My mother and I take multiple trips together every year and we are always on the look out for new getaways and this was perfect. We were falling in love the moment we turned into the driveway. It's quiet and secluded but not isolated. The space is the perfect size and the enclosed patio made morning coffees magical as we watched the squirls play or while reading a book. The scenic walk to the beach was fantastic and I highly recommend not being lazy and driving over! If you plan to take everything but the kitchen sink with you to the beach then i get it but we use our get aways to minimize our life and our stress and enjoy the little thing so there was no need to load up our entire life in order to spend a day at the beach. We picked up some food and drinks at the local grocery store, Hardings market really is quite friendly :), and had a wonderful breakfast of steak and eggs. Having a fully stocked kitchen made things so simple. Ive seen a few reviews that have mentioned the size of the refrigerator and while it is small, it was more than adequate. We never felt the need to stock it full as Hardings was right down the road. We all bought what we needed for day. We also don't drink much alcohol so I suppose a cooler would be necessary if you do. I recommend you give this little gem a try!
My best friend and I are already looking into our own trip in the fall because I've done nothing but sing ito praises since my return. I may take a trip up alone just to recharge my brain.
Thank you for a wonderful weekend!
Perfect for two - the name says it all. My husband and I had a very relaxing time at this little house. Air conditioning and fans kept the house very cool in the middle of July and the house was clean and equipt with everything we needed, even a hot tub! The location is beautiful - right in the woods - and the Waren Dunes beach is just a short walk down the road.
Eileen was very responsive and helpful with booking, arrival, and departure. Our deposit was returned very promptly.
Hopefully, we'll be back again in the future.
