'The cutest getaway cottage ever'

That's what Better Homes and Gardens magazine called this little retreat when it was featured a few years back.

We call it the the perfect place for TWO Lovers, TWO Friends, Couples, Sisters, Brothers... Rediscover the bond that brought you close in the first place, connect like you've always wanted to, gain a new perspective with that special person in your life.

Celebrate? Escape? No matter where you are in life, some alone-time away can make all the difference in the world. Intrigued? read on...

TWO is located on a secluded 1 acre wooded property, on the northern end of Harbor Country in the town of Sawyer. The Warren Dunes 1900 acres is right next door, and the beach is about a four block walk. A produce market and butcher shop are on each corner, so fresh provisions are never far away. Oh, and the incredible sunsets... It might just be the best memory of your stay!

TWO is a special little place. It has a soulful feeling. Maybe it's the 100 year old trees surrounding the house, perhaps it's the original pine floors and architectural details that date back to the 1920's. Charm yes, but this is not your typical 'cottage.' The house had a complete architect-designed remodel in 1997 and has been kept true to its principles ever since. Private hot tub, screened porch, it's all here for you to enjoy. The moment you walk through the door, you'll be reminded of what a great little hideaway you have found!

History

Known as 'LePin Cottage' (cottage in the pines) this humble abode was built in the 1920's and was used as a grape pickers' shack for the seasonal harvest. The home had no running water or electricity, and occupants were resolved to use the (still on property) outhouse when nature called. As the area developed and the vineyards moved inland, the house was abandoned and remained an empty shell for many years. In 1995 the house was purchased by an architect and his wife, and they set out to make the 'Cottage in the Pines' their family retreat. The renovation was nothing short of amazing. The house was put up on stilts and a new foundation was installed. The entire roof and joists were removed to make way for the new second floor, and an accompanying shed was located in nearby Indiana and transported to the property. The original windows and pine floors were saved, as was the footprint of the structure. The results were stunning. So much so that the home caught the attention of Better Homes and Gardens magazine, which paid homage to the renovation with a six page feature in the July of 1998 issue. Today the story continues. Each and every weekend, new memories and stories are created, as couples, and friends relax and enjoy this special place.

Area

About Eileen

We love to travel; been all over the country. We consider ourselves to have a keen sense of what works. Also we often travel with our dog. While we have been to many places, we always love to come back to this this little cottage. It is a calming sanctuary, and we're sure after a stay here you will feel the same way.

Eileen purchased this cottage in 1997

Why Eileen chose Southwest Michigan

Sawyer is one of those great destinations, that once you find it, you hope not too many others follow suit. The restaurants, shops, beaches, culture and all around vibe are unmatched. This little place in the woods has been described as being a storybook cottage, and we couldn't agree more. It oozes with cuteness and is the ultimate escape from the everyday.

What makes this cottage unique

The house is super clean and updated, not your typical musty cottage. The place is compact and efficient, but does not feel cramped. The property is a gorgeous one-acre secluded, wooded, property that is a very short walk to the Warren Dunes. It is the real deal when it comes to the Michigan cottage experience. The house has an antique wood burning stove that is perfect on those cool and winter evenings. To sum it up, the cottage is romantic, the perfect place for two! A great little hideaway!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks for the note. We had a wonderful time, thank you. The house was

great and exactly what we needed. We'd love to come back at some

point.

Take care!

Getaway

It was a perfect getaway cabin with a hot tub and all. The stairs are a little steep so just be careful. Lots of wineries in the area to enjoy as well.

The property is adorable & in a lovely location!

  • 4 of 5

I was looking for a quiet, romantic getaway for my girlfriend & I, and "Two" definitely delivered! The location was perfect & I imagine a trip during the summer months would be even better! So much to do and to explore! The potbelly stove was charming & the backyard was filled with the music of birds singing. We definitely recommend this adorable cabin!

There were a few things that could probably use some updating. Both mattresses seems to be quite outdated, and unfortunately, we woke up with some back pain every morning. A few of the roller shades also seem to be on their last leg, the toilet seems to have trouble flushing, & the fridge froze some of our food.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We do try to meet all expectations of our visitors. Leaving the fridge dial where it's set upon arrival would have kept your food from freezing. The fridge is brand new. We noticed it was turned all the way up after your departure. And the Levolor shades were purchased new this past summer, but many folks like to snap them right off the rollers, so that could have been the issue. We hope you return in another season so you can enjoy all the amenities including the fire pit and screen porch for night-time serenading of crickets, frogs, etc.

A Getaway that truly is, Perfect for Two

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I were looking for a place to get away in a location we had never traveled. We love finding quaint, cozy places to spend a weekend away from our children, and this cottage was very intriguing based on the pictures. It did not disappoint upon arrival. The house is very clean, well appointed, and has a ridiculous amount of charm. The kitchen has all the necessities and everything is in working order. The wood stove in the living room area adds to the charm of the cottage. The loft/bed area is perfect for a couple looking to relax and unwind.

The hot tub was an added bonus, especially with the cold temperatures during our visit. The backyard is very sizable and the fire pit is a nice touch. If it were warmer, I am sure we would have spent much more time in the backyard area. The location of the house is perfect. It feels very secluded, but is only a couple miles from the main center of Sawyer.

We cannot wait to return to this area of Michigan during warmer months, and this property will definitely be on the top of our list of places to stay. The owners of the property seem very nice and were very easy to work with.

Wonderful Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Relaxed in unseasonably warm weather on the screen porch. Walked to Warren Dunes State Park and had cozy fires both inside the cottage and in the outside fire ring. Dogs loved it! Very tidy and has everything you need to enjoy quite time away from it all.

This place was awesome. The hot tub, wood fire place, privacy, and proximity to lake michigan/ warren dunes make up an incredible package. Would highly recommend for any time of the year.
