TWO is located on a secluded 1 acre wooded property, on the northern end of Harbor Country in the town of Sawyer. The Warren Dunes 1900 acres is right next door, and the beach is about a four block walk. A produce market and butcher shop are on each corner, so fresh provisions are never far away. Oh, and the incredible sunsets... It might just be the best memory of your stay!
TWO is a special little place. It has a soulful feeling. Maybe it's the 100 year old trees surrounding the house, perhaps it's the original pine floors and architectural details that date back to the 1920's. Charm yes, but this is not your typical 'cottage.' The house had a complete architect-designed remodel in 1997 and has been kept true to its principles ever since. Private hot tub, screened porch, it's all here for you to enjoy. The moment you walk through the door, you'll be reminded of what a great little hideaway you have found!
Known as 'LePin Cottage' (cottage in the pines) this humble abode was built in the 1920's and was used as a grape pickers' shack for the seasonal harvest. The home had no running water or electricity, and occupants were resolved to use the (still on property) outhouse when nature called. As the area developed and the vineyards moved inland, the house was abandoned and remained an empty shell for many years. In 1995 the house was purchased by an architect and his wife, and they set out to make the 'Cottage in the Pines' their family retreat. The renovation was nothing short of amazing. The house was put up on stilts and a new foundation was installed. The entire roof and joists were removed to make way for the new second floor, and an accompanying shed was located in nearby Indiana and transported to the property. The original windows and pine floors were saved, as was the footprint of the structure. The results were stunning. So much so that the home caught the attention of Better Homes and Gardens magazine, which paid homage to the renovation with a six page feature in the July of 1998 issue. Today the story continues. Each and every weekend, new memories and stories are created, as couples, and friends relax and enjoy this special place.

We love to travel; been all over the country. We consider ourselves to have a keen sense of what works. Also we often travel with our dog. While we have been to many places, we always love to come back to this this little cottage. It is a calming sanctuary, and we're sure after a stay here you will feel the same way.
Eileen purchased this cottage in 1997
Sawyer is one of those great destinations, that once you find it, you hope not too many others follow suit. The restaurants, shops, beaches, culture and all around vibe are unmatched. This little place in the woods has been described as being a storybook cottage, and we couldn't agree more. It oozes with cuteness and is the ultimate escape from the everyday.
The house is super clean and updated, not your typical musty cottage. The place is compact and efficient, but does not feel cramped. The property is a gorgeous one-acre secluded, wooded, property that is a very short walk to the Warren Dunes. It is the real deal when it comes to the Michigan cottage experience. The house has an antique wood burning stove that is perfect on those cool and winter evenings. To sum it up, the cottage is romantic, the perfect place for two! A great little hideaway!
Thanks for the note. We had a wonderful time, thank you. The house was
great and exactly what we needed. We'd love to come back at some
We had a wonderful stay. This cute little home was exactly what we needed. It was clean and had everything we needed for our long weekend. The hot tub and cozy fireplace were a treat, especially after spending the afternoons walking along the beach and through the dunes. The fact that it was a quick hour drive from Chicago and dog-friendly was just icing on the cake. We'll definitely be back!
We truly enjoyed our 3 day winter's getaway in this adorable cottage and look forward to coming back. The house was very clean and the owners are extremely responsive. The upstairs queen bed was super comfortable and the tv/sitting area upstairs was very cozy. We had a Netflix marathon upstairs one night while listening to the wind howl outside. It was cold and blustery during our stay and we took full advantage of the indoor wood burning stove and the outside fire ring. There was an abundance of firewood supplied! Despite the cold, we walked to the dunes and down to the lake twice. I can only imagine how awesome it would be here in the summer and being able to take more advantage of the outdoor area... eating dinner on the picnic table on the back deck, reading on the screened porch, and packing a bag and spending the day at the beach. We went to Greenbush Brewery which is only a couple of minutes away for dinner our first night and it was wonderful. The morning we left we stopped for breakfast at Greenbush's Clean Plate Club and we were happily surprised to not have a wait and the breakfast was delicious. Other than that, I cooked each day and found the kitchen supplies adequate. The stairs were a bit intimidating at first glance and you pretty much have to come down sideways but they had a good grip and we were able to comfortably navigate them without any problems. I'd highly recommend this cottage to any couple looking for a relaxing getaway.
The cottage was perfect for the two of us. It was comfortable, quiet, and charming. The neighboring community was also great fun, with a nice brewery and charming shops.
We had a great stay in Sawyer, MI, and Rich/Eileen were perfect hosts. The house has every necessity you might need plus the bonus of a hot tub, allowing dogs, and a wood burning stove! As other reviews mention, the stairs are a little treacherous so you just need to be careful. We had to carry our little dog up and down the stairs with us but used the baby gate (included at the property) to keep her away from the stairs when not in use. It snowed A LOT during our trip but Rich/Eileen were very timely to plow and shovel, which was great! Many stores and restaurants in this area shut down or limit their hours during the winter, so make sure to research before going somewhere. However, even in December there are plenty of wineries, breweries, antique stores and gift shops open. You could also drive to Michigan city for more options. If you like winter sports, there are lots of places for snow shoeing or xcounty skiing. I imagine this house is amazing during the summer!
Wouldn't change a thing! Charming, well appointed cottage convenient to everything yet private. This is exactly what we wanted! Thank you! Would stay here again in a minute.
Walk to fresh produce/flower market (summertime) and butcher shop. The Dog Park is just minutes away in Harbert. Art Galleries, Wine Tasting, Greenbush Brewing Company, Lake Michigan Beach, Warren Dunes State Park, all nearby. A baseball diamond, pond and playground at Harbert Park; in winter there's an ice rink, too. Four Winds Casino and Hard Rock Café 10 min. drive. Acorn Theater, Vickers Theatre, and Journeyman Distillery/Staymaker in Three Oaks 9 min. drive south.
