Sawyer Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom Loft, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

'The cutest getaway cottage ever'

That's what Better Homes and Gardens magazine called this little retreat when it was featured a few years back.

We call it the the perfect place for TWO Lovers, TWO Friends, Couples, Sisters, Brothers... Rediscover the bond that brought you close in the first place, connect like you've always wanted to, gain a new perspective with that special person in your life.

Celebrate? Escape? No matter where you are in life, some alone-time away can make all the difference in the world. Intrigued? read on...

TWO is located on a secluded 1 acre wooded property, on the northern end of Harbor Country in the town of Sawyer. The Warren Dunes 1900 acres is right next door, and the beach is about a four block walk. A produce market and butcher shop are on each corner, so fresh provisions are never far away. Oh, and the incredible sunsets... It might just be the best memory of your stay!

TWO is a special little place. It has a soulful feeling. Maybe it's the 100 year old trees surrounding the house, perhaps it's the original pine floors and architectural details that date back to the 1920's. Charm yes, but this is not your typical 'cottage.' The house had a complete architect-designed remodel in 1997 and has been kept true to its principles ever since. Private hot tub, screened porch, it's all here for you to enjoy. The moment you walk through the door, you'll be reminded of what a great little hideaway you have found!

History

Known as 'LePin Cottage' (cottage in the pines) this humble abode was built in the 1920's and was used as a grape pickers' shack for the seasonal harvest. The home had no running water or electricity, and occupants were resolved to use the (still on property) outhouse when nature called. As the area developed and the vineyards moved inland, the house was abandoned and remained an empty shell for many years. In 1995 the house was purchased by an architect and his wife, and they set out to make the 'Cottage in the Pines' their family retreat. The renovation was nothing short of amazing. The house was put up on stilts and a new foundation was installed. The entire roof and joists were removed to make way for the new second floor, and an accompanying shed was located in nearby Indiana and transported to the property. The original windows and pine floors were saved, as was the footprint of the structure. The results were stunning. So much so that the home caught the attention of Better Homes and Gardens magazine, which paid homage to the renovation with a six page feature in the July of 1998 issue. Today the story continues. Each and every weekend, new memories and stories are created, as couples, and friends relax and enjoy this special place.

Area

About Eileen

We love to travel; been all over the country. We consider ourselves to have a keen sense of what works. Also we often travel with our dog. While we have been to many places, we always love to come back to this this little cottage. It is a calming sanctuary, and we're sure after a stay here you will feel the same way.

Eileen purchased this cottage in 1997

Why Eileen chose Southwest Michigan

Sawyer is one of those great destinations, that once you find it, you hope not too many others follow suit. The restaurants, shops, beaches, culture and all around vibe are unmatched. This little place in the woods has been described as being a storybook cottage, and we couldn't agree more. It oozes with cuteness and is the ultimate escape from the everyday.

What makes this cottage unique

The house is super clean and updated, not your typical musty cottage. The place is compact and efficient, but does not feel cramped. The property is a gorgeous one-acre secluded, wooded, property that is a very short walk to the Warren Dunes. It is the real deal when it comes to the Michigan cottage experience. The house has an antique wood burning stove that is perfect on those cool and winter evenings. To sum it up, the cottage is romantic, the perfect place for two! A great little hideaway!

Guestbook comments from the owner

great and exactly what we needed. We'd love to come back at some

point.

Great short vacation

  • 4 of 5

A friend and I went and stayed in the cabin from Monday-Wednesday, a very short trip out of the city. The location of the cabin couldn't be better, we walked to Warren Dunes and got lucky that it was warm enough for us to lay on the beach and even do some swimming. Word of advice, if you walk down the driveway and go left, when you dead end on that street and turn right, there is a lovely walk to the dunes that is MUCH shorter than going through the main entrance. I realized after the fact that Eileen mentioned that in one of her e-mails, but I sadly didn't see it!

When we got inside the cabin the key was exactly where Eileen said it would be, and there was a super cute "welcome bowl" on the table that had lists of restaurants and attractions nearby. The kitchen was wonderfully stocked as well, had plenty of plates/glasses/spices/coffee, etc. The cabin is small but very comfortable, you have everything you need and it's laid out so it seems larger than it is. The outside area is GREAT. The hot tub was amazing, we used it a few times a day. We never even used the fire pit but it looked great too. The "outhouse" is actually full of wood and paper for kindling a fire. If you are going to build a fire, I would recommend doing it before the sun goes down because it gets really dark when the sun goes down, there isn't much light outside.

The only reason I took one star off was because of the stairs. They are VERY steep. I have a size 7 foot and the stairs are so small and steep I had to go up and down sideways. My whole foot wouldn't fit on the stairs. If you are elderly, or have any issues that would make stairs difficult for you, I wouldn't recommend. But we did notice that the downstairs couch turned into a bed. We considered just sleeping on that but decided we would make it work.

My other comment is that if you are going "off season", nearly everything is closed. We had a lot of trouble finding a place to eat on Monday night but settled on Olympus, which is a diner down the street. The food was actually great so no complaints, but when we asked the waitress if there was anything to do in the area after 7 pm she said "the whole state shuts down after Labor Day". And almost all of the restaurants are closed on Wednesday (no idea why) For us, it didn't matter at all. We were just looking for someplace to relax and be outside. But if you were looking for shopping and lots of dining options, be careful what time of year you go. We will be back!!

Lovely and functional

  • 5 of 5

This charming-as-can-be cottage is just right for singles, couples and even small groups who want to feel like they are getting away from it all. Tucked into a wooded property, you feel as if you have escaped civilization and can fully take advantage of the private, backyard hot tub, screened-in porch, swing, grill and fire pit. Meanwhile, during the day, you can walk, bike ride or drive to the Warren Dunes and Lake Michigan, where you can take in hiking trails and the beach (don't forget your bug spray if you plan to hike in the wooded areas during the warmer months!) The small town of Sawyer provides a grocery store and a couple of restaurants, but be prepared to go into nearby locales, such as New Buffalo, for more options. Note: Most restaurants appear to be closed on Tuesdays, at least in Sawyer, so check that out in advance if you are making dinner plans. On the flip slide, you may be so taken in by your little cottage that you prefer to "stay home," in which case you should bring plenty of groceries for home-cooked barbecue or stove-top or oven-baked meals! This small gem is also stocked with a washer/dryer and small refrigerator, along with a host of other necessities. And the cozy loft provides sleeping arrangements for up to four people. We stayed during the summer, but it appears this would be a fabulous winter getaway, too. In either case, enjoy!

Fun girls weekend

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here with my mom for girls weekend! Had my 11 month old daughter with us. It was great and easy to contain her (she is still crawling, just be aware of the steep stairs if you have a walker!) The hottub was awesome. Never figured out the walk to the beach because driving to warren dunes was so convenient. Make sure you get breakfast at Louisa's cafe!

Nice small cottage with challenging stairs to sleeping area

  • 5 of 5

Let me start with the stairs to the sleeping area. They are very steep and the treads are short so only part of an adult foot fits on the stair. The pictures do not really show how steep they are. The sleeping is on the second floor and the only bathroom is on the 1st floor. We stayed for 4 nights in mid August and enjoyed the house and the area. The house is very clean and well maintained. We used the hot tub and found it clean. We spent one evening watching a movie from the provided DVD's. There are also books and magazines to keep you busy. The owners keep dishes, pots and pans as well as many other kitchen items for guests to use. We spent time hiking the sand dunes which are walking distance from the house. One can also walk to the beach if desired. If you drive to the beach there is a daily fee of $9 per car. We went up and down Red Arrow highway to visit many of the other towns along the lake. In Sawyer we ate at the Clean Plate for breakfast and the brewery for one of our dinners, both were very good. The best food we had was at Journeyman distillery's restaurant. The pizza there is amazing. If in St. Joseph's stop at Cabana's in downtown for the best ice cream you will ever have. We visited Round Barn brewery, winery and distillery one afternoon for some tastings, I would recommend. The market and produce stand in downtown Sawyer is a must stop as well. We enjoyed the house and would book again if traveling to this area.

Well kept hideaway was perfect for a relaxing and rejuvenating stay.

  • 5 of 5

We arrived to a beautifully kept home with lots of character. Our weekend was somewhat hectic with an Ironman triathlon race upcoming, but the stillness of the surrounding area and comforts of home made it much more relaxing. We used the kitchen for almost every meal over our stay and it worked out perfectly for two people who love to cook. Although it rained a bit, the outdoor areas were great to use. Honestly, the steep staircase wasn't an issue for us as the rest of the house and outdoor areas were used most of the time. I recommend a stay here for anyone interested in the area, especially the Warren Dunes park next door!
