'The cutest getaway cottage ever'

That's what Better Homes and Gardens magazine called this little retreat when it was featured a few years back.

We call it the the perfect place for TWO Lovers, TWO Friends, Couples, Sisters, Brothers... Rediscover the bond that brought you close in the first place, connect like you've always wanted to, gain a new perspective with that special person in your life.

Celebrate? Escape? No matter where you are in life, some alone-time away can make all the difference in the world. Intrigued? read on...

TWO is located on a secluded 1 acre wooded property, on the northern end of Harbor Country in the town of Sawyer. The Warren Dunes 1900 acres is right next door, and the beach is about a four block walk. A produce market and butcher shop are on each corner, so fresh provisions are never far away. Oh, and the incredible sunsets... It might just be the best memory of your stay!

TWO is a special little place. It has a soulful feeling. Maybe it's the 100 year old trees surrounding the house, perhaps it's the original pine floors and architectural details that date back to the 1920's. Charm yes, but this is not your typical 'cottage.' The house had a complete architect-designed remodel in 1997 and has been kept true to its principles ever since. Private hot tub, screened porch, it's all here for you to enjoy. The moment you walk through the door, you'll be reminded of what a great little hideaway you have found!

History

Known as 'LePin Cottage' (cottage in the pines) this humble abode was built in the 1920's and was used as a grape pickers' shack for the seasonal harvest. The home had no running water or electricity, and occupants were resolved to use the (still on property) outhouse when nature called. As the area developed and the vineyards moved inland, the house was abandoned and remained an empty shell for many years. In 1995 the house was purchased by an architect and his wife, and they set out to make the 'Cottage in the Pines' their family retreat. The renovation was nothing short of amazing. The house was put up on stilts and a new foundation was installed. The entire roof and joists were removed to make way for the new second floor, and an accompanying shed was located in nearby Indiana and transported to the property. The original windows and pine floors were saved, as was the footprint of the structure. The results were stunning. So much so that the home caught the attention of Better Homes and Gardens magazine, which paid homage to the renovation with a six page feature in the July of 1998 issue. Today the story continues. Each and every weekend, new memories and stories are created, as couples, and friends relax and enjoy this special place.

About Eileen

We love to travel; been all over the country. We consider ourselves to have a keen sense of what works. Also we often travel with our dog. While we have been to many places, we always love to come back to this this little cottage. It is a calming sanctuary, and we're sure after a stay here you will feel the same way.

Eileen purchased this cottage in 1997

Why Eileen chose Southwest Michigan

Sawyer is one of those great destinations, that once you find it, you hope not too many others follow suit. The restaurants, shops, beaches, culture and all around vibe are unmatched. This little place in the woods has been described as being a storybook cottage, and we couldn't agree more. It oozes with cuteness and is the ultimate escape from the everyday.

What makes this cottage unique

The house is super clean and updated, not your typical musty cottage. The place is compact and efficient, but does not feel cramped. The property is a gorgeous one-acre secluded, wooded, property that is a very short walk to the Warren Dunes. It is the real deal when it comes to the Michigan cottage experience. The house has an antique wood burning stove that is perfect on those cool and winter evenings. To sum it up, the cottage is romantic, the perfect place for two! A great little hideaway!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks for the note. We had a wonderful time, thank you. The house was

great and exactly what we needed. We'd love to come back at some

point.

Peaceful hideaway in the woods

  • 5 of 5

The fragrance of lily of the valley blooming around the hideaway house welcomed me. Then a hot shower and time for the hot tub to soothe me. A short walk to the lake opened my heart to the peaceful sound of waves and collecting sea glass. When my family came in to visit, the screened in back porch was where we all congregated, laughed and shared thoughts and memories. Many nights I just slept in the screened in porch because it was very peaceful. I spent hours bird watching, chipmunk viewing, reading and enjoying the swing. I loved the charm of the old windows and the creak of the original floor. Can't wait to come again!! A wonderful place for my dog and I to feel safe with all the comforts of home.

Clean, warm, inviting, quaint, peaceful

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay. The owners thought of a great many details, all they way down to storage containers for leftovers. Everything was clean and comfortable. The cabin was charming and peaceful. The area it is located in is convenient for exploring the local attractions north and south, as well as the state park.

Quiet cottage perfect for Two

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at the cottage. Beach access to Warren Dunes is at the end of the road. We did notice that there is a state park visitors fee, so be aware that someone could stop you and ask for your pass. We were perfectly located to travel around the area and visit other towns. Plenty of breweries and restaurants around!

Beautiful little cottage! Lovely walk into the state park. Close to things. Great place to escape and relax! (Note that sleeping is up a STEEP staircase. NOT for the mobility challenged)
