'The cutest getaway cottage ever'

That's what Better Homes and Gardens magazine called this little retreat when it was featured a few years back.

We call it the the perfect place for TWO Lovers, TWO Friends, Couples, Sisters, Brothers... Rediscover the bond that brought you close in the first place, connect like you've always wanted to, gain a new perspective with that special person in your life.

Celebrate? Escape? No matter where you are in life, some alone-time away can make all the difference in the world. Intrigued? read on...

TWO is located on a secluded 1 acre wooded property, on the northern end of Harbor Country in the town of Sawyer. The Warren Dunes 1900 acres is right next door, and the beach is about a four block walk. A produce market and butcher shop are on each corner, so fresh provisions are never far away. Oh, and the incredible sunsets... It might just be the best memory of your stay!

TWO is a special little place. It has a soulful feeling. Maybe it's the 100 year old trees surrounding the house, perhaps it's the original pine floors and architectural details that date back to the 1920's. Charm yes, but this is not your typical 'cottage.' The house had a complete architect-designed remodel in 1997 and has been kept true to its principles ever since. Private hot tub, screened porch, it's all here for you to enjoy. The moment you walk through the door, you'll be reminded of what a great little hideaway you have found!

History

Known as 'LePin Cottage' (cottage in the pines) this humble abode was built in the 1920's and was used as a grape pickers' shack for the seasonal harvest. The home had no running water or electricity, and occupants were resolved to use the (still on property) outhouse when nature called. As the area developed and the vineyards moved inland, the house was abandoned and remained an empty shell for many years. In 1995 the house was purchased by an architect and his wife, and they set out to make the 'Cottage in the Pines' their family retreat. The renovation was nothing short of amazing. The house was put up on stilts and a new foundation was installed. The entire roof and joists were removed to make way for the new second floor, and an accompanying shed was located in nearby Indiana and transported to the property. The original windows and pine floors were saved, as was the footprint of the structure. The results were stunning. So much so that the home caught the attention of Better Homes and Gardens magazine, which paid homage to the renovation with a six page feature in the July of 1998 issue. Today the story continues. Each and every weekend, new memories and stories are created, as couples, and friends relax and enjoy this special place.

About Eileen

We love to travel; been all over the country. We consider ourselves to have a keen sense of what works. Also we often travel with our dog. While we have been to many places, we always love to come back to this this little cottage. It is a calming sanctuary, and we're sure after a stay here you will feel the same way.

Eileen purchased this cottage in 1997

Why Eileen chose Southwest Michigan

Sawyer is one of those great destinations, that once you find it, you hope not too many others follow suit. The restaurants, shops, beaches, culture and all around vibe are unmatched. This little place in the woods has been described as being a storybook cottage, and we couldn't agree more. It oozes with cuteness and is the ultimate escape from the everyday.

What makes this cottage unique

The house is super clean and updated, not your typical musty cottage. The place is compact and efficient, but does not feel cramped. The property is a gorgeous one-acre secluded, wooded, property that is a very short walk to the Warren Dunes. It is the real deal when it comes to the Michigan cottage experience. The house has an antique wood burning stove that is perfect on those cool and winter evenings. To sum it up, the cottage is romantic, the perfect place for two! A great little hideaway!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks for the note. We had a wonderful time, thank you. The house was

great and exactly what we needed. We'd love to come back at some

point.

Take care!

Cute, charming, perfect!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I celebrated our 10 year anniversary here for four days. This was our first trip without kiddos, so I was anxious. The cabin was PERFECT! I was amazed at all the details. It is FULLY STOCKED! The small snacks and knowing toiletries were there was very sweet. We would not have changed a thing. The stairs are addresssed on many posts. This is not a negative. My husband and I had zero issues with the stairs, just take them slow and limit trips up and down. We took our three month old puppy because we didn't want to leave her. The details for dogs was also amazing. She enjoyed it and was well behaved and it was easy to have her there. The walk to the dunes is a pretty good hike. We didn't mind, but we did pay one day to drive in so that we could take our beach items. Loved the hot tub and the screened in porch! Eileen was very friendly. We took our bikes but didn't see a ton of places to ride so we didn't ride them much, mostly just walked, but that was good for us. It is literally the cutest cabin I have ever seen in my life and we would highly recommend it for a getaway!

Great location - within walking distance to the Dunes. Quick drive to New Buffalo.

Eileen made sure we had everything we needed - from dog bowls for our pup to towels for the hot tub. Thanks for making our trip so great!

Great getaway location

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I enjoyed a 5-day getaway in this adorable little cottage. The stairs are steep - that's been said in other reviews - and we found that descending them backwards, as if climbing down a ladder, was the quickest and safest way to get to the main floor. We are in our late 50's and had no trouble navigating the stairs.

We thoroughly enjoyed our mornings and evenings on the screened porch. Some mornings temps were in the 50's, so I snagged the thick, fleece blanket from the living room and curled up on the rattan couch with a cup of hot tea and a book. The cabin's location in the woods provided great privacy. A few evenings, we sat around the firepit and enjoyed a crackling fire. There was a hot tub and grill available, but we didn't happen to use either.

Warren Dunes State Park and Lake MI are just a short walk away (take a left out of the driveway and in about a block, locate a path that cuts through the woods into the park. Follow the paved road to the dunes/lake). The area has plenty of great restaurants within a 20 minute drive. Be sure to check out Mesa Luna, the Red Arrow Roadhouse, The Clean Plate Club, and our favorite (in New Buffalo), the Stray Dog. There is a fresh produce stand and a meat market close by; we cooked some of our meals in the cabin (note that the refrigerator is not full size and plan accordingly). One day we ventured farther North to Holland, MI, and found numerous restaurants and interesting shops to explore. It made for a great day trip.

Some evenings, my husband and I curled up on the couch to watch movies. We brought our own HDMI cable and plugged it into my laptop to stream Amazon Video. WIFI is available, though we did have to reset the router (located upstairs) a couple of times to recover a signal. The broadband TV was also spotty, but we aren't big TV watchers, so this was not a big deal.

The kitchen was well stocked with many convenience items, such as aluminum foil, seasonings, plastic bowls, and a wide array of kitchen utensils (though the chef's knife had a broken tip and the knives overall were pretty dull; I used this as a great excuse to eat out more and cook less!).

Eileen was quick to respond to our texts and emails and quick to process our deposit refund after our stay. I would highly recommend "Perfect for Two" hideaway. The next time I'm looking for a week-end retreat, I may come back with my black Lab and spend a quiet week-end here on my own. I love the charm of this cottage!

This is a simple home with lots to offer. In all honesty, if you chose to not leave the property, your getaway would be perfectly memorable in every way. My son and I feel blessed for our time spent here. ❤️
