This property was purchased by our great grandfather after they had camped in this location for several years.
Bob Dunston purchased this house in 1920
The fifth generation of our family is enjoying the splendors of Black Lake and creating a lifetime of memories with family and close friends.
Small rural community, beautiful sunrises, quiet campfires, crystal clear skies, beautiful clear water with fantastic fishing, and plenty of great places to eat, and no lines of traffic or people anywhere!!!
Great place for family vacation. Nice beach area & awesome swimming for kids. Inside was nice & clean. Plenty of sleeping room.
Great fishing too!
Would recommend staying there .
Loved it, Perfect
For close to 10 years we have been renting cabins/houses on lakes in northern Michigan. There are only 2 cabins we would consider returning too, and this is one of them. The kitchen has everything you need, the house is clean and there is plenty of sleeping space. The kind bed in the master is more comfortable than our king mattress! Best of all, there is a sandy beach and the water is shallow well past the end of the dock. In addition, this area of Black Lake is very calm, which meant our boat didn't get beat up. The owner was very helpful and wanted to ensure we enjoyed our stay. Definitely a great place to stay!
This place is a great cottage on the sandy west side of Blake Lake. The cottage itself is larger than the pictures lead you to believe, and although a bit outdated it is clean and very confortable. We had a large party of 4 adults and 6 young children and this place accommodated us with no problem. The beds were comfortable and the place was packed full of everything you need for your stay with the exception of beach towels. The full bathroom was large and clean and the addition of another half bath that can be accessed without walking through the main living area is great when you are spending the day on the beach that is right out the front door. The beach was very clean and free of any grass, rocks or weeds which the kids had an awesome time playing on! The lake was warm and extremely clean. Very shallow waters extend very far into the lake and we had to walk out a long distance just to reach waist deep water. Perfect for the little ones! The water is extremely clean! We were also amazed on how few others seemed to be using this wonderful lake. Most days it felt like we were the only ones there! We were able to rent a pontoon from another person on the lake that the cottage owner Bob was able to put us in touch with. It was well worth the extra money to be able to get out to explore and enjoy this beautiful lake. We will recommend this place to our family and friends and wouldn't hesitate to stay here again!!
We’ve stayed at several cottages in the northern lower with two families (4 adults, 5 smaller children) over the past several years and would rank this one among our favorite for a few reasons. The cottage itself isn’t new, as most aren’t, but it was exceptionally clean and well cared for, and proved to be much larger than the pictures give it credit. The large bedroom had a newer queen and was very comfortable. Enough floor space to add a pack-n-play and a small air mattress to comfortably sleep Ma/Dad a 4 year old and a 2 month old without ever feeling cramped. The 2nd bedroom was also large enough to be comfortable, and the two small beds were easily pushed together to form a sudo-queen. I’m told the beds were acceptable, though not overly enjoyable. The kids seemed perfectly content in the 3rd bedroom with the bunk and single. Living, Dining, Baths, and Kitchen were again clean and large enough to be comfortable. Well enough stocked to have everything we needed without seeming cluttered.
Outside, the beach was nice, close, and exceptionally sandy. The water was shallow and sandy for a long ways out, which allowed the boys to venture waaaay out into the lake in their paddle boat or the provided canoe without the adults ever having to worry. The dock was a nice addition, though somewhat useless given the water depth… but the mooring bouy did provide a suitable tie-up for the ski boat. We grilled on the charcoal grill every night while enjoying a fire in the fireplace and a beautiful view of the lake.
Black Lake itself was warm, clean, and much quieter throughout the weekends and week itself than most others. The location of the cottage protected us from the prevailing west winds almost every day, offering calm waters and a nice balance of sun and shade. We ventured to many of the other sand bars ranging in depth from about a foot to 5-6 feet, which provided many great places to take the kids to swim and explore. We even cruised (slowly… no wake) up Black River a ways just to take a boat ride, which was a great way to spend a few hours.
Although we did not fish much ourselves, there was a nice weed bed out front (beyond swimming depths) that other fishermen would work their way through each morning and evening. I wasn’t paying much attention, but they kept coming back, so they had to know something….
The neighboring cottages are closer than we usually aim for, but they were primarily empty and the folks that were there were either qui
