About Mona Rishel-Shissler
My husband (Bryon) and I purchased the James Campbell Farm property in 1990 and spent many years restoring the original (1780's) log house as our home. Subsequently we have refurbished all of the farm buildings. We have planted 100's of trees (mostly native species), created vegetable, herb and flower gardens, replanted the orchard, developed fruit vines - red and black raspberries, and grapes as well as blueberries. In addition to raising much of what we eat we cut firewood on our sustainably managed forests and now offer guests the opportunity to catch and release the fish in the pond -- Come and see how 'green' country life can be!
Mona Rishel-Shissler purchased this Cottage in 2009
Why Mona Rishel-Shissler chose Fort Hill
Bryon and I decided to renovate and expand one of the many buildings on James Campbell Farm as a guest house for family and friends. They have enjoyed it so much, we begin to rent it so that others have an opportunity to enjoy 'our little piece of paradise.' Our 2nd season has been very successful with both U.S. and international guests. Many of our guests have said, 'I wish I could live here!' And, BEAUTIFUL is the word most frequently used to describe the property.
What makes this Cottage unique
The cottage feels like it is 'tucked' into its very own 'special' spot. There are many types of bird feeders that attract a variety of birds. Flowerbeds attract butterflies. There are ducks, great blue heron and kingfisher on the pond. And on any given day you might see woodcock, ruffed grouse, wild turkey and white-tailed deer. If you are lucky you might hear a great horned owl, screech owl, or a coyote. The view from the dining area overlooks the pond, forests and mountains.

Perfect relaxing Vacation
Everything was perfect. Owners responded to any questions immediately. They made us feel perfectly at home in their home. They thought of everything (down to the aluminum foil I forgot to pack). Watching the birds, Chipmunks and squirrels was so much fun, always something to watch. Even though it rained every day there was something to entertain us and wildlife to see. They have a lot of good movies to pick from as well. We would highly recommend this cottage to anyone looking for a fun relaxing getaway for 2. Thank you for sharing your property with us!
Second time we have stayed at this cabin and enjoyed the experience immensely on both occasions. Privacy, solitude and all amenities were as advertised. Only item not previously disclosed by the owners was the wonderful frog song serenade from the lake and surrounding trees while we enjoyed a nice campfire!! Great place...
Quite, quaint, and cozy. Perfect relaxing weekend.
This was a beautiful place to come and relax with my husband. The place is so peaceful.
If you love nature...this is the place!
Beautiful weekend spent here in the delightful cottage. Even though it rained, it made everything more lush and fragrant. Much of my time was spent in the sunroom with the sliding door open and bird chirps and breezes coming through the screen door. This cottage is the perfect place for retreating from the day to day grind. Lots of hiking opportunities within several miles of driving. Would highly recommend and I will be back! Thank you to Mona and Byron for sharing this positive space and beautiful surroundings.
Far surpassed my expectations
Serene surroundings include a gnarly tree teeming with a million birds, pond for fishing, trails, cottage both rustic and elegant, and a photographer’s dream.... What more could a sojourner desire to make his/her visit a pure delight! We loved being here.
That is what we love to hear! And, already reserved for a 5 night stay in the Fall. The Cottage has something new to share - Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. Thank you for sharing.
