Guestbook comments from the owner

Well it's time to go home. It was a great Memorial Day weekend and the weather cooperated. We golfed at the local course and spent the next day fishing on White Lake. It was a little windy, so not too many fish were caught. Today is our son's 21st birthday so we plan to picnic on Lake Michigan to celebrate. This is a very nice, clean home in a beautiful setting.

Wonderful Property

  • 5 of 5

This is a long over due review and so very deserving of this property and of the owners Jim and Doris.

We were making a last minute get away out of Chicago, and like to bring our (not so little) dogs with us. We have used home away before for other properties, but loved their pictures and the ideas of walks and the beach and night fires, even when we booked in the late part of October. It was everything as described in the property listing.

Their paper work was prompted and contacting them was easy. The directions to the property were easy and great, even at night. And when we woke the next morning what a beautiful sight we saw. The beautiful November clouds on the little black lake were breath taking. The dog run was perfect. Their endless back yard that blended right into Hoffmaster State Park trails that took you right to Lake Michigan was awesome.

The house was a little big for just the two of us and our dogs, but none the less... perfect. It had everything needed to make a great stay. Clean and well maintained, all the kitchenware and appliances were in great working order. Attached garage was convenient. Washer and Dryer were easily accessible and better than the ones I have at home.

We didn't venture away from the property to eat at any local restaurants, we were so wonderfully content staying at the house.

Jim and Doris stopped by to make sure everything was going well and to see if we needed anything. They are very delightful. We could have talked all day.

We would definitely recommend this property and look forward in returning in the fall again. Although, we don't want to recommend it too much, they might get too booked up.!!! Thanks Again Jim and Doris for making us and our four legged family feeling welcome. We still have your Christmas card still hanging on our fridge.

Land between Lakes

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I booked a week here with our adult children and spouses, six adults total, and enjoyed the home very much. The general location feels relatively private, but it’s not too far to shopping near Muskegon/Norton Shores. Out front is a shallow lake, with access to rowboat, canoe, and kayaks. Out back is a kennel and fire pit. Beyond the fire pit, and through the woods, you eventually walk into trails at Hoffmaster State Park. We walked to Lake Michigan twice, but for all our beach gear, it was easier to drive around to the state park beach parking area. We brought our own bikes, and one day, we hooked up with the Ottawa County bike trails about ¾-mile south, and biked to Grand Haven for lunch.

Inside the house, we found living, kitchen, and dining areas to have just enough room for all of us. The bedrooms and baths were modern and clean. The master bedroom was particularly large, on the second floor with windows looking out over Little Black Lake.

Thanks so much, we had a great time.

Would stay here again

  • 5 of 5

The house is perfectly situated with Little Black Lake for kayaking, canoeing, row boating, and fishing across the road in front of the house, and hiking through beautiful pine woods to the Lake Michigan beach in the back of the house. Our family, including two teens and our chocolate lab, had more than enough room to spread out. I especially enjoyed relaxing on the porch that looks out toward the lake (although I'd wished the road wasn't there - the cars that did travel it move at a fairly good speed). One night, we enjoyed s'mores in the backyard's fire pit.

While some of the decor, furniture and appliances are dated, the house is very clean. The washer and dryer, as well as the large attached garage, were handy. There were three kayaks, plus we brought one, so the entire family was able to have their own. There were even enough life jackets for each of us. The owner was a gem to work with! She made a point of making sure there were enough right-sized bicycles for each of us. However, we didn't use them as they were pretty worn.

We ventured out for a few hours each day including to the lighthouse at Pere Marquette Park, Grand Haven Pier, Kirk Park (dog-friendly area), USS Silversides Submarine Museum, Chocolates by Grimaldi, and Craig's Cruisers Family Fun Center. We would recommend all of these! However, our favorite part was just being able to hike through Hoffmaster State Park in the backyard and spend time at the beach.

Our new favorite place to getaway!!!

  • 5 of 5

One of the best family getaway so far! The house is very clean, lots of activities to do indoors and outdoors, great view, and my favorite spot gotta be the front porch. We brought our dog with us so having PJ Hoffmaster State Park in the back is just a bonus! We hiked with our dog everyday to Lake Michigan, it was really neat to be disconnected sometimes! We also visited Grand Haven, which is about 15 mins away. Doris was great to work with, quickly responded to all my emails prior to arrival. We will definitely be staying at this place again...potentially this Fall!

Owner's Response: Outdoor lovers such as these guests are a perfect fit for vacationing here. Our guests enjoy hiking, kayaking canoeing, fishing and riding bikes. However, if you're not all that outdoorsy, many people also report their favorite spot in the house is the front porch. It's a great place to kick back, enjoy the view and read a great book. If you get a bad weather day, the basement has a pingpong table and air hockey table.

Very nice

  • 5 of 5

Nice comfortable home.

Very clean and spacious.

We loved being able to walk right into the woods and be in the park.

My husband, our two dogs and I had a very relaxing vacation.

The fact that it is dog friendly is one of the the things that drew us to this house.

I have already recommended to friends.

Our area has something for everyone. The main attraction of course is Lake Michigan with it's 200 foot high sand dunes spectacular sunrises, sunsets & singing sand beaches. (20 minute hike from the house)

Our home is across the street from Little Black Lake but we own 100 feet of private access to the lake. Walk down our dock and use either our, canoe, kayaks or row boat. They are all included in the rental price. Take a hike through Hoffmaster Park or ride our bikes on the Spring Lake bike path which begins just 1/2 mile from our rental.

You'll feel like you're 'away from it all' but restaurants, shopping centers and fun activities for the whole family are just minutes away.

Although Little Black Lake is a shallow weedy lake, the water quality is excellent. It is wonderful for kayaking, canoeing and fishing. Powerboats are not allowed on Little Black Lake. Also, for swimming we recommend going to one of the beautiful Lake Michigan beaches in our area

Other Activities: Kayaking, Canoeing, Bird watching, Hiking, Hot Dog Roasts around the Fire, Watching Beautiful sun Rises Over Little Black lake, Taking in Spectacular Sun Sets Over Lake Michigan, Charter Fishing, Michigan's Adventure, Watching Kite Boarders at the Lake Michigan Beaches, Walking the Grand Haven, Muskegon and Ferrysbug Piers, Taking scenic Photographs, Grand Haven's Musical Fountain, Muskegon's Art Museum, Silver Sides Submarine, Fricano's Pizza, Docker's Restaurant, Craigs Cruisers. Grand Haven's Coast Guard Festival. Walking the board walk in Grand Haven, Miss Lisa's Ice cream in Ferrysburg, Jilly's Glass in Muskegon. Visiting U-Pick Berry Farms. The list goes on and on...

Golf: Oak ridge golf course is a great public course about 1 mile from the rental. It is well established, very beautiful and challenging. Other courses to check out are Stone Gate, Grand Haven Country Club, Muskegon Country Club. All within 10 miles.

Ski: The cross country skiing is wonderful in Hoffmaster State Park
