There is nothing like watching the river and mountains from our deck or great room windows. No matter what season there is always something to see. Mama Elk helping new babies cross the river, magnificent eagles fighting over a salmon catch, beaver collecting debris and branches to build their homes, and a wide variety of ducks, geese, and birds. An amazing drama of some sort or another plays itself out right in front of our eyes.
Enjoy walks along the river, roasting marshmallows over our campfire pit, or lounging on the deck. In the evening you can stargaze and if you are lucky, watch the full moon rise from behind the mountains directly across from us and shine on the river below. Then fall asleep to the sounds of the river.
And that’s just for starters. We are located in close proximity to Mount Rainier National Park, Mount St. Helens, and the Goat Rocks Wilderness area. Literally minutes away are great trails to hike in the summer or snowshoe in the winter. White Pass Ski Area is only 25 miles up the road. With all the additions this year, White Pass will be the place to downhill and cross country ski and snowshoe. If you need equipment, our Spots Hut in town or the rental shop at White Pass can get you ready for your day’s activities. Then return home to the warmth of a fire, the comfort of a cozy cabin or soak away the day’s activities in our outdoor hot tub.
If you are looking for peace and solitude, for rest and relaxation after skiing or hiking this is the perfect place. We have heard over and over from people who have stayed here that they felt refreshed and ready to hit life again after a stay at our cabin.
“What a pleasure it has been for us to stay in your home. The beautiful rooms, well equipped kitchen and the beautiful view and relaxing atmosphere have helped us unwind from a long year of strenuous activity.” Howard & Betty, Paul & Romaine – Beaver Falls, PA
“We found your home to be a very comfortable place to return to each day after long and strenuous hikes in the beautiful surrounding areas. It’s a lovely retreat home.”

My husband and I raised 3 children in Tacoma Washington before we moved to Packwood. Mark recently retired from the Boeing Commercial Airplane Company. I retired from Boeing several years ago. We discovered Packwood about 15 years ago and were in awe of the mountains surrounding the town. We are especially drawn to Mount Rainier. We moved to Packwood permanently 8 years ago so we could live the quiet rural life. We were not sure how much we would enjoy it after living in the city for so many years but we love it and can’t imagine living anywhere else. We recently built and moved into a second home so we are able to share our river house with others.
Mark or Sharon Romero purchased this cabin in 2001
We purchased vacation property and spent every weekend we could in Packwood. It was close enough from our home in Tacoma that we could throw a few supplies into our car on a Friday night and within 2 hours we could be sitting on our deck watching the moon rise from behind the mountains and shed its light on the river. Packwood is perfect for us because everything we love to do is just a short distance from here. We enjoy hiking, backpacking, skiing, snowshoeing, and rafting down the Cowlitz River. In just about 20 minutes we can be at a trailhead in the Goat Rocks wilderness area or the Stevens canyon entrance to Mount Rainier National Park. A little farther up the road and we can be at the White Pass Ski Area. We have created some wonderful memories here. In summers past we have headed up into the national forest just minutes away and put our rafts into the river. After a 2 hour rafting trip we would get out in front of our cabin and light up the BBQ. We have backpacked into the Goat Rocks Wilderness area with our children and our nephews. I like to think the rocks we added to the Pacific Crest Trail monument at the top of a peak are still there. We have hiked trials, snow shoed at Paradise on Mount Rainier and cross-country skied at White Pass Ski Area. But one of the best memories my husband and I share is when we pulled our mattress out onto the deck on a warm summer night and stargazed until we fell asleep. My husband woke me the next morning so I could watch elk graze in front of our deck. It doesn’t get much better than that! Our cabin by the river has been a great place to share with family and friends.
Our cabin sits just yards from the Cowlitz River. Morning walks with our dog Joey has become a ritual. We love watching him climb over and under logs brought down by the river. From our great room window we can watch a variety of wildlife, which for us, has been one of the best features of our place. Our cabin is just a 10 minute drive into the town of Packwood where we can load up on supplies and stop by the local coffee shop to catch up on the local gossip while sipping our lattes. Then walk through the town and check out our shops and thrift store. When we are finished with our day’s activities we enjoy sitting around the campfire, stargazing or playing games in front of the fireplace. Our cabin is a great place to stargaze – wide expanse with little artificial light to interfere. And of course we love the idea of sitting in the hot tub or the Master bath’s jetted tub after a strenuous day.
Cowlitz View exceeded our expectations! The home was lovely, comfortable and supplied everything we needed. The owners were very helpful and accommodating. My husband and I celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary with our two adult children and my son's girlfriend. After long days of hiking, the hot tub, great food from the grill, and spectacular views made this spot an outstanding long weekend away. Beds were comfortable, living area with expansive windows offered a stunning display of God's glory. We also enjoyed the quiet privacy of the area. We would not hesitate to return!!
I stayed here with my wife and my parents. The pictures don't do the place justice. You are right on the river and secluded in the mountains. The place is very quiet, great views. We will definitely be staying again, and I can't recommend it enough.
We stayed at this home for 2 nights, wished we had booked it for a few more nights. This was such a beautiful and comfortable place. The location and view were awesome, far more amazing than the pictures suggest. The cabin was immaculate, and everything we could possibly need was provided (kitchen, books, games).
The owner, Mark, was very helpful. He even came to visit a few hours after we arrived to make sure we had everything we needed and to show us how everything operated (hot tub, grill, etc.).
We would definitely stay here again if we return to this area, highly recommend it to others!
What a lovely setting and home! Much attention to detail was taken inside with the beautiful wall colors and decor. A very comfortable and pleasing space to spend time in. The view from the gorgeous wall of windows and deck was amazing. We watched the full moon rise above the mountain and were in awe of the stargazing. We enjoyed hiking the creek bed, Mt. Rainier and Mt. St. Helens. Thanks so much for sharing your home and having it so well equipped with everything we needed.
The property was even more beautiful than photos. Even when it was raining, it was so peaceful to look out at the Cowlitz River. Takes a little twisting and turning to get there, but once you do, it is so quiet. Owners, Mark and Sharon had left fresh ground coffee as well as a fabulous scone mix for our first breakfast. We were " had" at the first bite! Thanks for that little touch. We certainly enjoyed it. We brought groceries with us, so could relax and not think about meals. Deli ladies at the Packwood IGA make a mean Noble Roman pizza that we ordered and brought home to bake. Kitchen is excellently stocked as is the entire rest of the house. This is probably a property for 2-3 adult couples as the deck does not have a railing and the bank at the river could be dangerous for toddlers. Many families have stayed there, so,it is possible. We didn't see any of the wildlife that other guests have, but we have great imaginations, so we knew they were there. Nice to have laundry facilities on the premises as we were starting on a 10 day journey. Lots of previous visitors have been tough on the furniture and the beds, so hopefully in the future new guests can count on some new upgrades.
The location is perfect for entrance into Mt. Rainier from south, east and western entrances. Seniors, don't forget your Senior National Parks Pass-- saved us $25 entry fee.
We were there for only 24 hours - but would have loved to have stayed a week. It was so relaxing. The cabin is set up with everything you need to unwind from the city stress and daily routines of life. Will definitely recommend staying here - and hope to come again with my family of 5.
