About John Kohler

We are a family partnership. We bought 3 acres of undeveloped land and built our vacation home, where we hope to eventually retire.

John Kohler purchased this house in 2006

Why John Kohler chose Kona Coast

We built in Papa Bay because it's secluded and we love the ocean views, the sunsets and the peaceful surroundings. We love the Big Island for its varied climate zones and lack of the crowds of Honolulu.

What makes this house unique

A great getaway from the stress and bustle of life, and standard crowded vacation spots. Very peaceful, surrounded by nature, with wonderful sunsets. We love to decompress here and recharge our energy.

This is the home for you!

  • 5 of 5

With an entire month ahead of us to spend on the Big Island, we were hoping the rental home would work for our needs. The home has EVERYTHING you need to enjoy your vacation! As soon as you arrive you feel the welcome from the owners in the great care they take of the whole place.

We cooked most of our meals in the well-stocked kitchen. With a full sized refrigerator, large cooktop/oven combo, microwave, toaster oven, etc., as well as all the utensils, plates, pans and everything else, all we needed to add was the food!

The large living room was well-used by our grandchildren and the big dining room table was occupied for every meal as well as being used for maps and other items for day-trip planning. Perfect!

Lots of bedroom space and plenty of bathrooms for everyone too. Super comfortable beds and large closets for storing everything.

We were pleasantly surprised to find the home had miscellaneous beach toys and boogie boards available for us to use. Very nice! We purchased beach towels at the Kona Costco and we were ready for any beach adventures.

Since we had recently purchased land on the big island and we needed to do quite a bit of work on it, the rental home was our place for eating breakfast, packing lunches and then off we went to the land. At the end of the day, it was the place to come home to. Awesome.

The beautiful plants and always interesting wildlife (turkeys) were a bonus. The wireless internet was very important to us and we were able to take care of everything we needed to do without any hitches.

We can't wait to go back and stay at this home again!

The perfect home for us

  • 5 of 5

We spent 12 nights in this super home and were sad when we had to leave. The house has everything you need and more! You'll feel like you're the only one around and you don't see any other houses when you are on the property. Views are great with ocean view en lots of birds around the house.

The house is very functional has everything you will need from comfortable beds to a fully stocked kitchen. Wireless internet works fine and there is satelite TV although we only used it to watch the local news once or twice.

It is a bit of a drive from the airport and the road is narrow and winding but we loved the drive. And it is an easy drive to Hilo and Volcano NP. If you want to be close to restaurants and nightlife this is not the place for you but if you want a peaceful, quiet and secluded place you can't find a better place to stay. We enjoyed it very much and hope to be able to come back some day.

Awesome home

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here in July 2014. The amenities were more than I expected. A full service kitchen, spacious living area, satellite tv ( even though I didn't watch that often, too busy seeing the island) The bed rooms were very comfortable. When I got there I opened the windows and balcony sliding door and never closed them. I kept the screens closed though. Every bedroom has its own bathroom. The breeze that the home got was great. There was total privacy. it was like we were the only people around for miles. The view of the night sky from the roof deck was spectacular, no light pollution to wash out the stars. the home is centrally located to the south side of the island and Kona.

Capt Cook Home exceptional

  • 5 of 5

Great home, great location, great experience. This home make for the an exceptional kona based experience. Loved the area; the home is recessed into southern kona which is a the way the big island should be experienced. Wild turkeys, abundant vegetation, great views and a large functional home. Great value.

Perfect place for a family

  • 5 of 5

This house was the perfect place for a family with 5 teenagers. The house was spacious, had a great view and was very well equipped. Even a well stocked spice cupboard! Milolii Beach in the town next door had phenomenal snorkeling and wonderful beach. Great bird and gecko watching from the patio and a cute mongoose family as well. The property is not close to any nightlife or touristy things which is what we like. Great stars and sunsets. Big dining room table for family dinners and games. Grocery store south about 15 minutes had plenty of good options for home cooked meals. It is an hour drive from Kona Airport and well worth the drive. We did many day trips like South Point, the volcano and scuba trips out of Kona then we'd return home to peace and quiet.

Beautiful, spacious home with handcrafted touch, nice ocean sunset views

  • 5 of 5

We decided to stay in this home, as a sort of mini-vacation/ transitional housing. We stayed for five weeks and looked for a more permanent home on the island. The home is very nice, with a great kitchen, and jacuzzi 2 person bath in the master suite. The home was very clean upon arrival. The area is great if you want a true taste of a Hawaiin getaway, with peace and solitude.Even though it is a good drive from kailua Kona, if you are into exploring the agricultural side of Hawaii, and beautiful nearbye snorkeling beaches, you will love this place. Our favorite spot with the family was 2 step beach which has amazing snorkeling for all ages. You may even see dolphins and sea turtles. The area has a multitude of estates and farms, think macadamia nuts and coffee, among many other things.Be sure to taste the local fare and stop at the roadside fruit stands. Also,Volcano Park and many other attractions are nearbye.(too much to do!) :) This is a great place to stay and wonderful for our large family.Mahalo,it was a fantastic adventure!
