This Historic Old Hawaiian style home was built in 1890. It is situated on 1 acre of land directly overlooking Hilo Bay. A large covered Lanai allows you the prestige first class views of the morning sunrises, surfers, canoe paddlers and ocean loving individuals who frequent the ocean throughout the day.
Whales can be seen jumping starting as early as March.
Garden like setting offers an abundance of tropical foliage such as plumeria, ginger, Ti leaves, lime tree, orange trees and banana. Enjoy what the the Lanai has to offer with outside seating for lounging and afternoon tea, or a glass of red wine.
This home is a five minute walk to Historic downtown Hilo crossing the famous iron bridge locals call the ' singing bridge'.

Aloha! I am a local resident born and raised here in Hawai'i. I have happy dogs, several chickens, goats and horses. I still love to ride my horse, go the beach and simply be with my family. You can often find me working around my home and tending to our animals. I love to travel, and enjoy the simple things in life.
The Owner purchased this house in 1890
This was my grandfather's home which later became my mother's home of which I was raised in. It offers the splendor of the yester-years. My family has been in Hawai`i for over 6 generations. I am happy to share the Aloha of this beautiful home with others, the Hawaiian way.
Each room is unique with furnishings from the past such as a Koa 4 poster King size bed, and twin beds dated back as far as 1900's. High ceilings throughout the home. Hand painted floral designs on the walls in the living room, dinning room and family room. Koa panels surround the family room. Simple kitchen well equipped that leads to the laundry room, twin beds and back yard.
If you are looking for a property close to town, with beautiful sunrises, views of the bay, incoming cruise ships, and a lush backyard with large patio then this is the perfect place. However, if you also require comfort and cleanliness then you may want to reconsider. The inside of the home is in great need of deep cleaning, de-cluttering, and repairs.
The kitchen refrigerator water filter was expired, there was mildew on the inside of the ice chute release flap, there was a spill in the bottom drawer, and there were old condiments in the door. Many of the dishes, glasses, and silverware were dirty; there is no dishwasher so you are at the mercy of the prior guest’s dishwashing procedures. The dish cleaning brush in the dish drain was old and had mildew on it. There were crumbs on the counters and the top of the stove. Even the trash can lid was dirty on the inside and out. There is no empty cabinet space to store your own groceries. The kitchen needs a deep cleaning, de-cluttering and removal of the many old and worn personal items of the owner.
Many of the furniture pieces are original and very beautiful; however, they should probably be in a museum and not in a vacation rental home. There is not an area within the home where a family of 6 or more can sit and relax together. The furniture is old and stiff and not welcoming to sit on for any period of time. The pillows on the couch are stained and need to be replaced. Several of the chairs are the same. The one small TV can only be seen from one angle by a couple of people and is limited to local channels. The front door lock was malfunctioning and we had to exit the property through the back door.
All of the showers are in need of deep cleaning of mildew in the grout lines. The toilets were not clean – brown and yellow stains were found under the toilet seats and in the bowl. The master bathroom toilet brush looked to be as old as the home. The bath towels need to be replaced as they are beginning to wear thin and are holding odors.
Since there is no air conditioning, we had to sleep with the bedroom windows open and then try to tune out the loud bullfrogs and street traffic. The ceiling fans helped to move the air, but the rooms still seemed stifling at times.
We have spent a great deal of time thinking through the writing of this review. The home is truly a historical gem, but it is needing some major TLC and updating to be a vacation rental property.
The house and property is in a perfect location for walking to town and also enjoying the view of the bay. The dining room is large plus the house also has a small office which allowed us to take some work calls while the rest of the household slept. There is no air conditioning but the ceiling fans worked well. We did end up purchasing a small extra fan for one of the bedrooms. This home is a perfect place for a family vacation while in Hilo. Thank you for the enjoyable stay!
This is a great historical home located right on Hilo bay. The king size bed in the master was comfortable and our kids each had their own rooms. The views inside and out are incredible as is the property itself. Our kids spent hours finding frogs in the backyard. Keala was amazing and helped us get settled despite our very late flight. We will absolutely stay here again!
We loved our stay at Hale Alani. It was the perfect home for our family as we celebrated our son graduating from UH Hilo. From all of our pre-stay communication to our greeting by "Pudding", it was just perfect. This special home has been in this family since that late 1800's, pre statehood, pre territory when we still had an active Hawaiian Monarchy, wow! We were honored to be able to stay in this home and are blown away that all of the families special belongings are kept in the home, like the saddle Pudding's mom used on her horses.
The view of Hilo Bay couldn't be better from the huge picture windows and the patio facing the bay, it's just perfect. Each room is outfitted comfortably and the kitchen is stocked with supplies. The location couldn't be more convenient! A lot of Hilo people know this house because of it's prominent location on the bay.
Okay, I read another review which sort of complained about insects or something and some things being old and worn out. If you want new boring stuff, go stay in a hotel. If you want eclectic charm and history and great value, this is the place.
Thank you Keala for all your great communications and Pudding for showing us all the delicate details of the home your grandfather meticulously built.
Aloha and Mahalo till next time! :)
We were influenced by the many positive reviews to book this property. If considering a stay here, another point of view may be helpful.
This home has the potential for being as lovely as it once was. As it is now, it is dirty and in disrepair and needs a good cleaning and clearing out.
Lots of living space is offered here, as well as a convenient location to the quaint downtown. Situated on the bay, the view is spectacular. Pudding, who grew up here, is a kind and gracious host and a source of historical information about the home and area.
We did not see signs of any "creature" (mentioned in an earlier review), but were disturbed by the rodent poison box in a kitchen pantry. Apparently, it is necessary and effective, but made us wary.
Pudding was a wonderful, helpful and welcoming host and her house was beautiful, spotless, old fashioned and fully equipped with all the comforts of home.
I marveled at the selection of beautiful dishes and glassware. I enjoyed making coffee every day and relaxing in the house.
The yard and grounds of the house are spectacular, loved the wide open porch, the grassy lawn, the beautiful tropical plants and the lovely view of the Bay.
Was great to be in the living room and den areas, all of the koa wood throughout and the fascinating historical features.
The town of Hilo is charming and relaxing. The house is a short walk into the town for shopping, eating or just a lovely stroll.
I hope to return soon and often to this slice of historical paradise!
