About Cindy Barinholtz

I grew up in Evanston, Illinois just 2 hours from St. Joseph. I discovered the area about 14 years ago and fell in love with it. I have traveled around the country and never found all the attributes that St. Joseph has to offer. I have owned Kismet Cottage for 12 years now and 5 years ago opened a fun novelty gift shop in downtown St. Joseph, State Street Stuff. In just 24 months have sold over one hundred thousand items and were voted one of the best retail stores in southwest Michigan!

Cindy Barinholtz purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Cindy Barinholtz chose St Joseph

After searching for several years for the perfect St. Joseph Cottage we chose this property for a variety of reasons. We Love the location, just a block and a half from downtown. We wanted to be up the bluff, so as not to have to deal with sand in the cottage. This property had all the charm of the 100 year old cottage that it is, but has been totally updated in all the important areas.

What makes this cottage unique

We LOVE the 23' enclosed screen porch! There is a porch swing, couch and 2 chairs. It is the perfect spot to sit outside and watch the world go by. We also loved that the bedrooms are big enough to accommodate a King & Queen size beds!

Home away from home! We LOVE Kismet!!

  • 5 of 5

I believe this was our 8th time staying at Kismet, and every year we fall in love more with this place. My kids have grown up vacationing at Kismet! It is just a block away from all the shops/restaurants of downtown St. Joe. We have also walked to the beach without needing a vehicle. The sleeping arrangement is super convenient for my family with three (now older teen/adult) kids. We enjoy cooking in the kitchen which is clean and well-appointed with dishes, pots and pans. The fire station next door has never been noisy and I actually find it comforting. It is reasonably priced for seven full nights. I can't recommind Kismet highly enough!

Wow, what a wonderful place. The owner thought of everything and then some. Nice home, lots of amenities. You can't beat the price. Nice large bedrooms, comfortable beds. Relaxing front porch. Well stocked kitchen with lots of cabinets and space. Would definitely recommend Kizmat cottage for your next vacation to beautiful St. Joe. MI

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

My group of five really enjoyed our comfortable days at the Kismet Cottage. The three bedrooms have comfy beds, and the house has several great spaces to gather, including the screened-in front porch, living room with three couches and a nice recliner, six-person kitchen table, and (my personal favorite) a lovely garden-fringed patio in back that gets morning sun and has an outdoor fireplace, plus grill if you are so inclined.

The only two cons are that bath towels are not provided -- so bring your own unless you want to dry yourself on clothes -- and bedroom electrical outlets are in short supply. However, everything else is included, like coffee, movies, and books, plus quirky decor that seems to mix flower child and old-school beachy styles, haha. Cindy's staff keeps the 3-BR, 1.5-BA house clean, and there's plenty of parking in back. Also easy to walk to St. Joe's cute business area. Good value and good stay.

Our 2nd Visit

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at the Kismet Cottage again this year - like last year the kids did not want to leave - the beach, cottage and all the activities available for our family were great. My parents and sister liked the fact that restaurants were so close by too. It was also great to come home to the comfort of a nice place after a busy day to relax and watch a little TV - thanks Cindy for making it such a nice place to visit!

Third visit to this home - great time!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I just completed our 3rd visit to Kismet Cottage. And the kids are already asking when we are going again. The house is very comfortable and well-equipped, and there is so much to do in St. Joe's. I highly recommend this for a family vacation. Thanks Cindy!

Had a great time

  • 5 of 5

Though it helped that the weather was wonderful, but the house, location, amenities were all great. We would highly recommend this stay. The ONLY thing we needed to bring were groceries and beach & bath towels. Even general cooking we already there! Beds were very comfortable and rooms were spacious. I had 2 adults and 3 kids all under age of 11 and never felt cramped. Easy walk for all to all attractions, restaurants, shops, beach. For those who prefer to drive, also easy car trip to beach if you want to bring coolers and toys to spend whole day. Beach is nicest I have seen in Michigan with beautiful views at town and beach. Thank you for a great vacation and cant wait to come back!
