About Lynn & Daryl
We continually discover a new side of ourselves and Maui as we explore, swim, snorkel and cook delicious island meals. And there are times we just like to hang out and listen to the waves, and read or paint a painting...
Lynn & Daryl purchased this Condo in 1998
Why Lynn & Daryl chose Lahaina
What's not to love about the climate, culture, oceans, mountains, forests and cuisine of Hawaii? We looked all around Maui, and fell in love with Kahana Reef's beautiful and peaceful setting. Kahana's cooler microclimate was a factor, too. It's more comfortable than Kihei and Lahaina, with no need for air conditioning. And the occasional misty rain provides for many rainbows. And then, there are the views of Molokai, Lanai and Oahu. Over the years, we have never gotten tired of those views!
What makes this Condo unique
Off the beaten path, Kahana Reef is very private yet accessible to beaches, shopping, dining and touring the island.

A lovely Hi Stay
Other reviews have commented on air, when the trade winds are blowing and the windows open there is a beautiful breeze that cools the rooms. The first two days I awoke to rainbows. Views are spectacular for sunset. Pool is small but very well maintained. A lovely Hawaiian vacation.
Some Good - Some Bad
First the Good
The inside of the unit was as it appeared in the photos. There were plates and cookware and everything in the kitchen you would need within reason. The unit was clean. Most everything was operational.
As other reviewers have mentioned, the unit is very dated. This alone was not a big deal to us. However it seems that it is reaching a point that some repairs need to happen to maintain the property. The garbage disposal was not operational. This caused the drain to be slow. When the dishwasher drained, the sink would back up. Slightly more annoying was the sliding glass door. This door is very heavy and difficult to open and close. My wife couldn't operate it. Worth mentioning is the repair work on the seawall. The owners did disclose this on the listing, however, the impact to the property is more extensive than I expected. There is an orange temporary fence that is about 4 feet tall separating the grass area just outside the lanai from the work happening. This fence does partially impede your view of the ocean. One day we returned to the condo to find the work on the wall had thrown concrete debris up into the lanai area. It seems like someone tried to spray it clean, but it left concrete film all over the glass door and debris all over the lanai floor. We had to clean the area before being able to use it again. The listing states that work on the seawall will continue through September. I was there toward the end of September and there is no way they will be done by then. A quick call to the condo association revealed that they don't know when construction will be complete. They stated "We're hoping for the end of the year." The representative also said that delays happen all the time so it is impossible to know exactly when the project will be complete. This is unfortunate timing for whale season.
This unit has a pest problem. Ever present in the kitchen and bathroom were tiny bugs. I couldn't determine if they were ants or something else. There may also be a bigger problem. After noticing bites on our skin that line up in a row along with inflamed patches, we investigated the bed. We removed the sheets and found the mattress cover had hundreds of little brown spots all around the edge. We never found any bed bugs, but remained suspicious. To make matters worse, we notified the owners of the bugs in the kitchen and bathroom and the possibility of a problem in the bedroom and they dismissed the idea.
Yes, you were advised there would be construction, and we were very clear construction would be "in front of the condo." You received a nice discount for the inconvenience. The work delay was because the construction superintendent went in for surgery, causing work to be effectively halted.
Per our rental instructions, if there were any cleanliness or maintenance issues you should contact the cleaners or on-island contact, and keep us in the loop. No one was ever contacted. In fact, none of these issues were ever mentioned during your stay, or when we called you about a missing lock box key. When the key wasn't where our guests said they left it, we advised them of the key replacement fee. That's when the accusations started.
We've been very fortunate in our 21 years that no one has refused to accept responsibility for misplacing a key - until now.
Good times in Kahana
While the condo is in need of updating, it had everything we needed. (except A/C, but you never really need that in HI) although we did at 99 degrees with 90% humidity!) All in all, good value
Clean and convenient
Was perfect for me and my boyfriend. Clean. Although stated in the info about the place, there is no AC and major construction going on; neither were a huge deal because we were only there at night. At night it was cool enough with the fans to sleep. Really nice to have beach chairs, towels, a Brita and coffee maker
Good for the price
We enjoyed the location of this place. It was close enough to everything and very quiet. It was nice to be on the bottom floor and had a great view even though the grounds were under construction. It could really use some updating. And I would never go back to a place without air conditioning, it was HOT! We had the screen open for a bit in the evening to try and get a breeze and we got a ton of bugs instead. We made the best of it and Maui was amazing!
Amazing deal and location, we loved it!!
This place was just amazing. We saw sea turtles right in front of the place in the mornings, the neighborhood is very chill and close to everything, being on the lower level was great since for walking right out to the beach. My girlfriend and I had the perfect week.
Be warned though, there is no AC and it can get very hot at night. Overall, a great deal though. We got a discount because of the construction it it wasn’t even that noticeable since we were out during the days.
I would stay here again without hesitation. Thanks for the wonderful stay.
