|Minimum Stay||1 - 7 nights|
This incredible ocean view home is only about 100 feet from the Pacific Ocean. You can enjoy relaxing strolls on the sandy beach, swim in the family-friendly ocean bay, and return for a fresh water dip in the privacy of your own pool. In the evening enjoy the unforgettable Costa Rican sunsets from the 2nd floor furnished balcony, or the 3rd floor shaded belvedere.
If you want excitement, a huge selection of activities are readily available: scuba diving, snorkelling, turtle expeditions, sport fishing, canopy tours, sunset sails...to name just a few. Costa Rica is famous for its diverse wildlife population. Monkey sightings are common, occasionally even from the pool at Casa Cerca del Mar!
If you are more inclined to relax, Casa Cerca del Mar offers a cool and comfortable home away from home to enjoy the peace and serenity of a quiet beach in Costa Rica...Just sit and listen to the rhythm of the ocean waves!
When my wife and I both retired from high-stress health service careers, we decided to devote our lives to escaping the 'hustle and bustle' of life: Costa Rica made that dream come true, and we feel we have managed to turn the clock back on our lives, never feeling healthier or younger!
Tom purchased this house in 2004
It was love at first sight! A unique 3-level home in a quiet exclusive neighborhood...Beautiful private garden... Monkeys visiting the mango tree next to our own pool... The sounds and sights of the ocean from our master bedroom...How much better could it be???
One of things we like bast about our location it that the ocean in front of the villa is safe for swimmers of all ages-- There are no hidden obstacles or severe drop-offs, and no dangerous currents or rip-tides. The kids can safely enjoy body-boarding, and very occasionally, (about once a year) an ocean 'swell' from the North will build great surfing waves. But for the most part the ocean outside the Casa is tame and safe for swimmers of all ages and skill levels.
And I'm certain you'll be as surprised as we are when you walk out onto the beach and scan the two miles of beach to your left and then the mile of beach to your right and see maybe only a handful of beach-goers...you'll instantly realize the entire bay is all YOURS to enjoy!
Please take the time to explore Playa Penca just to the North, a bit beyond the 'Las Brisas' beach bar and restaurant. The waves are a little rougher there, but the ocean and beach are pristine and you will find some great shade trees to laze under while watching the Pelicans dive for fish in the cove.
My family and I stayed here for a week and the place was perfectly situated to enjoy sunrise, sunsets, the birds, and adventure tours picking us up at the door. Our ages ranged from 20-58. Suited all of us!! The beach was literally a few metres away. This is my third time to CR and have to say this beach is superb. Soft sand, no rocks under feet while wading, comfortable to walk for miles.
Tom's house is comfortable, clean and safe. We were 8 and had enough room for gatherings and alone time. Beds are great to fall into after fun and sun. We saved money by cooking but there are eateries nearby, we enjoyed The Smoking Pig. The staff here at casa circa del mer are great, friendly and helpful.
Tom is courteous, prompt and nice! Will definitely come back!!

We were due to arrive in Costa Rica on Thanksgiving day and unfortunately so was hurricane Otto. Thankfully Potrero suffered minimal damage. Our trip was postponed by a couple of days and Tom generously allowed us to extend our trip. Tom is very quick to either call or email you back. We couldn't be happier it all worked out!! The beautiful black sand beach is so close and we had it all to ourselves. The house was very clean and met all our needs. We saw a family of howler monkeys almost everyday. Saioa is awesome! She scheduled our rides from the airport with Eder. She also put us in touch with Justin from Wet & Wild tours. He set up all our excursions. The people are so welcoming and friendly. It was reassuring to have Omar (the night guard) keeping watch for us. We never once felt unsafe. We rented a golf cart and bikes to get around and that worked out great. We took advantage of the kayaks. The private chef made us a wonderful dinner and took care of everything. We would highly recommend staying here and plan to come back.

Group of 6 people. Been to Costa Rica before (San Jose), and looking for a different experience. We found it in Guanacaste and this home was perfect for us. Plenty of room. Each couple had their own bedroom and private bath. We had an extra bathroom for goood measure. The home is very comfortable and functional. Loved being close to thhe beach. Fine restaurants are nearby. Easy access to most places you need to go. Best part of the stay is the friendly, polite, and efficient staff that are always happy to assist. The home manager/concierge, Sai, was kowledgeable of all aspects and was able to secure appointments for massages, tours, and answer questions about most anything. The housekeepers, gardener, and night guard were all very good. We vacation a lot in various parts of the world, and have stayed at countless VRBO sponsored homes, and can say that this is one of our favorite places. Given the opportunity, we would surely return and rent this property again. Pura Vida!
The villa was just what I expected and hoped for, and it quickly felt like home. We stayed here for four nights at the end of an 11-day trip. (4 adults 4 kids.) After some adventure and hiking in the La Fortuna area, Playa Potrero was a wonderful quiet beach town where I was happy to just relax . . . and swim and swim and swim. I loved this nearly deserted beach. I could stay in the warm water all day. The waves were fun for body surfing, but past the breakers the bay was super calm. The kayaks at the house were a huge bonus—lots of fun! There were also a few beach toys and a float that the kids (ages 4–8) used. We found the waves a little rougher around high tide, but overall, I thought this was a very family friendly swimming beach. The sand is the color and texture of ground pepper, but with small bright pink bits of shell. Turquoise water. Spectacular view from the beach of the islands and edges of the cove jutting out on either side—and gorgeous sunsets. We felt like this place could’ve been a pirate’s hideaway. The town had just enough going on for me. A few restaurants in walking distance, a small market, yoga and a massage at nearby beachfront hotel Bahia del Sol, boogie boards for rent at the sailing center. I much prefer this to a bustling tourist hub. For food, I recommend The Shack and the casual restaurant on the beach by the Sailing Center. We also used the chef service, having one breakfast and one dinner made for us at the house. The mahi mahi was probably the best fish we’d ever eaten! And eating it on the crows-nest couldn’t be beat! The house was well maintained. It felt like the right mix of practical and luxury for me. Nothing that made me too nervous about my kids ruining, but comfortable and clean. The bedding in the master bedroom was especially nice. Kids loved the pool. Laundry was a plus. Kitchen stocked with essentials. Tom was great—always incredibly quick to respond to emails. Saioa was easygoing and helpful. Silvia did a fantastic job cleaning and was very sweet. Benito was there every morning to tend to the yard and pool, but he kept a low profile, giving us privacy. Practical stuff: If you rent a car, be sure to stop for gas on the way in. If not, you’ll have to backtrack quite a bit to find a gas station. Better to make sure you have a full tank approaching Potrero. The house alarm system took a little getting used to. Easy drive to LIR made the last day relatively stress free. ***I’m daydreaming daily about returning!***
This home allowed to truly experience Guanacaste with our family of 5 kids. I expected us to be one block from the beach, but we were one home from the beach! The space of 3 bedrooms downstairs with the master suite upstairs gave us all space and relaxation. The kitchen allowed for easy breakfasts and the ability to sleep late on vacation. The wi-fi kept the kids connected to social media.
The security system was very easy to use and we always felt safe. By locking the doors, using the slider bars, and alarming the system, there was no way anyone could take our stuff. In addition, we used the safe in the upstairs master bedroom to store laptops, ipads, and passports at all times. Simple and easy to use! It is no different than in my own home.
We explored the beach by the house (Potrero), the beach to the north (Penca), then Conchal and Tamarindo to the south. The snorkeling at Penca and Conchal were far better than I expected based on online reviews. We saw eels, puffer fish, tuna, trumpetfish, starfish, eagle ray, and a moorish idol (Gil from Finding Nemo).
We went on a sailboat (Serendipity) for a day which I recommend.
We enjoyed the local restaurants. Hibiscus and Las Brisas were our favorites. Hibiscus is a block away and Las Brisas is at the north end of Playa Portrero. We had seafood everynight and all was delicious and well presented.
Benito cleaned the pool each morning and Sylvia came twice during our week. The pool was fun for extra kids playtime.
Renting a home is the way to go in this friendly, unspoiled region. Everything is safe and friendly so we enjoyed exploring. Pura Vida!!
We loved every minute of our stay at Casa Cerca del Mar! We had 7 travelers: 2 grandparents, 2 adults, and 3 teens and we stayed 8 nights. It was definitely not long enough! The pictures were right on and the house was close enough to the beach to run over there barefoot or just listen to the sound of the waves crashing. Benito kept our pool area tidy and Sylvia come 2x in the week to give us a full house cleaning and linen change. Both of them were so nice! Saoia the house manager was great when she checked us in and out; she had all sorts of info on the area and even drew us a map so we could find our way around and get to places like the market or the bank.
We loved the great room area in living room, dining room, kitchen. This made for great family meals and fun game nights. We also loved our coffee up in the crow's next (even with a tricky spiral staircase) or happy hour on the 2nd level balcony (we loved that the master suite was just off this balcony!). A special perk with the house was water toys that were included....2 sea kayaks, an old surf board, a broken but usable boogie board, 2 beach balls, and an inner tube. We used some of these items every day and it helped to keep us at home more often where we could play in the pool or surf instead of feeling like we had to go out and spend money on tours.
We booked a great snorkel cruise with Lazy Lizard and loved every minute of that outing! We also did an 11-line zip line with Congo Trail Tours where we braved the dirt roads and drove ourselves up into the jungle. All outings were an adventure when you drive yourself in Costa Rica!
The only down side we experienced was a male howler monkey who perched in a tree and woke us up at 530am; thank goodness he was only there 1 time!! The only other monkey spotting was around 5pm when a family passed thru in the trees on the lot adjacent to the house. They were great to watch and added to the jungle feel and sounds that were all around.
I will definitely suggest this house to anyone vacationing in the area of Playa Potrero! Thanks Tom for providing a house option that made for such great memories!!
This comfortable villa is located in a quiet neighborhood on a secluded beach. For that reason, security is an important issue. Although there is no violent crime to speak of, there have been two break-ins in which thieves took some valuable possessions. Therefore, as of August 15, 2016, we are including a guard service at no extra charge as an added measure of security for our guests.
The home is equipped with High Speed Internet and WI-FI so you always have the option of staying connected with your Smart Phones, tablets and Laptops. You'll enjoy twice weekly maid service and daily pool and grounds maintenance. Play with our two sea-kayaks (1 two-person - 1 one-person)-- paddle out to explore the nearby islands, or fish for Wahoo, Rooster Fish, or Snapper in the lush fishing grounds of Potrero Bay. The ocean in front of the house is yours to enjoy!
The property manager 'Saioa' will be there to greet you and introduce you to the house. And she will gladly help with all your arrangements: From Liberia Airport pick-up to Zip-Lining, Snorkeling, and any number of spectacular Nature and Wildlife Tours.
The neighborhood is safe and quiet, and the house is easy walking distance from grocery stores, fun restaurants, and night spots. Enjoy the swim-up bar at the Bahia Del Sol just a few minutes walk south on the beach, or stay up late dancing on 'Ladies Night Wednesdays' at the Las Brisas nightclub and restaurant, just a few minutes walk north along the beach. Don't miss breakfast at The Shack or live music at Coconuts. Speaking of coconuts, our grounds keeper, Benito, will be happy to fetch fresh coconut water for you from the local palms-- watching him open them deftly with his machete is an experience you won't forget! And if you like, we can arrange a traditional Costa Rican chef for your party-- he will shop, cook, serve, and clean-up for as little as $10/plate while you enjoy the spectacular sunsets from the 2nd or 3rd floor verandas.
