About Tom

When my wife and I both retired from high-stress health service careers, we decided to devote our lives to escaping the 'hustle and bustle' of life: Costa Rica made that dream come true, and we feel we have managed to turn the clock back on our lives, never feeling healthier or younger!

Tom purchased this house in 2004

Why Tom chose Costa Rica

It was love at first sight! A unique 3-level home in a quiet exclusive neighborhood...Beautiful private garden... Monkeys visiting the mango tree next to our own pool... The sounds and sights of the ocean from our master bedroom...How much better could it be???

What makes this house unique

One of things we like bast about our location it that the ocean in front of the villa is safe for swimmers of all ages-- There are no hidden obstacles or severe drop-offs, and no dangerous currents or rip-tides. The kids can safely enjoy body-boarding, and very occasionally, (about once a year) an ocean 'swell' from the North will build great surfing waves. But for the most part the ocean outside the Casa is tame and safe for swimmers of all ages and skill levels.

And I'm certain you'll be as surprised as we are when you walk out onto the beach and scan the two miles of beach to your left and then the mile of beach to your right and see maybe only a handful of'll instantly realize the entire bay is all YOURS to enjoy!

Please take the time to explore Playa Penca just to the North, a bit beyond the 'Las Brisas' beach bar and restaurant. The waves are a little rougher there, but the ocean and beach are pristine and you will find some great shade trees to laze under while watching the Pelicans dive for fish in the cove.

Great home by the beach!

  • 5 of 5

We loved every minute of our stay at Casa Cerca del Mar! We had 7 travelers: 2 grandparents, 2 adults, and 3 teens and we stayed 8 nights. It was definitely not long enough! The pictures were right on and the house was close enough to the beach to run over there barefoot or just listen to the sound of the waves crashing. Benito kept our pool area tidy and Sylvia come 2x in the week to give us a full house cleaning and linen change. Both of them were so nice! Saoia the house manager was great when she checked us in and out; she had all sorts of info on the area and even drew us a map so we could find our way around and get to places like the market or the bank.

We loved the great room area in living room, dining room, kitchen. This made for great family meals and fun game nights. We also loved our coffee up in the crow's next (even with a tricky spiral staircase) or happy hour on the 2nd level balcony (we loved that the master suite was just off this balcony!). A special perk with the house was water toys that were included....2 sea kayaks, an old surf board, a broken but usable boogie board, 2 beach balls, and an inner tube. We used some of these items every day and it helped to keep us at home more often where we could play in the pool or surf instead of feeling like we had to go out and spend money on tours.

We booked a great snorkel cruise with Lazy Lizard and loved every minute of that outing! We also did an 11-line zip line with Congo Trail Tours where we braved the dirt roads and drove ourselves up into the jungle. All outings were an adventure when you drive yourself in Costa Rica!

The only down side we experienced was a male howler monkey who perched in a tree and woke us up at 530am; thank goodness he was only there 1 time!! The only other monkey spotting was around 5pm when a family passed thru in the trees on the lot adjacent to the house. They were great to watch and added to the jungle feel and sounds that were all around.

I will definitely suggest this house to anyone vacationing in the area of Playa Potrero! Thanks Tom for providing a house option that made for such great memories!!

Words can not express how wonderful this house is. We stayed for 3 weeks. The house was perfect for a good size group (8 adults) and a 3 and 6 year old. Everyone had their own space and having private bathrooms in each room was great. My favorite part of the house was the upstairs terrace. The view of the ocean was spectacular. Morning coffees have never been better and beautiful sunsets was a great way to end the day. As wonderful as the house was, what really made the trip memorable were Saioa, Benito, Sylvia, Eder, and Tom. I am forever grateful for their kindness. They are there to help with whatever you need and they do it all with such joy. I instantly felt safe which was so important as we were traveling with young kids. They became our family while we were there! Everything is walking distance, but we decided to rent a golf cart from Golf Kart Oasis to get around. They are so great and they deliver the golf carts to the house. It was so much fun and a great call as we got to explore great beaches. Playa Penca was spectacular. Make sure to get sandwiches at the little restaurant. They are delicious! Playa Conchal was also a must see and perfect for kids. Mother Nature truly out did herself with all the beautiful beaches near the house. The people of Potrero are so kind and welcoming. It was heartwarming being immersed in such kindness for 3 weeks. We also enjoyed visiting Antonio at the fruit and vegetable stand near by. Everything tastes so great!! We will definitely be back to this special house and town! In all honesty, it was the best family vacation we have been on! Pura Vida!

Nice big house for 2 families

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. There were 8 of us. With 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, the house fit us perfectly. The home was very clean. The wifi was excellent (downstairs only). We were literally steps from the brown, super soft, sandy beach. The beach in Portrero had very few people on it the whole week. The house provided towels for the beach and private pool. We walked to restaurants for the first 4 days and rented a car the last 3. We loved the property manager. She came by for the a/c leaking and surfboard/kayak repair. She was super informative. We were surprised to have the maid come on our 2nd day. It was not necessary.... not dirty yet. She came again on the 5th. We found the gardener, Benito, there all times of the day, every day. We lost the privacy of renting a home rather than staying in a hotel. He arrived by 7:30 every morning. Be sure to turn off the backyard alarm early or it wakes the whole house up. The house is very well secured. Locked gate, outside and inside alarms, bars in the doors and windows, and a safe for your belongings. We felt safe, but NEVER left anything unlocked!!!! We were warned many times of the recent break-in. The women never stayed home or left alone... safety in numbers! (But the local women do all the time!) There was a/c in every room. Big plus! The beds were hard... literally made our hips ache as weird as that sounds. There were great sheets and towels too! The plumbing downstairs was iffy...we plunged a few times. I think that is Costa Rica for you. We did have a washer and dryer to use. So helpful! We used Justin from Wet and Wild to go ATV and zip-lining. He also took us to Rincon (awesome trip), and Arenal volcano (far, but worth it). Justin is the way to go!! We also did the Lazy Lizard catamaran (fabulous)!! The sunset from the 3rd level is beautiful! We loved Perla's and Hibiscus...minutes to walk to from the house. Costa Rica sailing center is a short walk from beach side..good drinks! You'll need a car to go to Tamarindo and Flamingo, but not for any excursions. The excursions always picked us up. Justin came to the house to book internet required. He is cash prepared. Edder picked us up from airport for $80. He'll also drive you around, but it's so expensive ($100) that you may as well rent a car. There is a mini store minutes from the house, but it's kinda rough. Overall, I wouldn't change a thing. I loved renting a house rather than a hotel. The homeowner was also helpful

Le paradis sur terre

  • 5 of 5

Costa Rica at it's best!

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful trip I had with a group of friends. This place is perfect for large groups, families, family reunions etc. The beach is literally a stone's throw away and from the upper deck you have lovely views of the ocean. The vibe is low key but the place is maintained top notch. Benito, the groundskeeper, was there every morning to ensure the pool was skimmed and ready and to generally make sure everything was ready for us. I would highly recommend this property.

Unfortunate turn of events...

  • 3 of 5

I was part of the group that recently had the misfortune being burglarized at this home during our stay (see review by Cyndi S. below). I want to start off by saying that despite the unfortunate turn of events that our family made a lot of great memories here and we are thankful and blessed that no one was harmed during the theft. We have said "they can steal our stuff, but they can't steal our joy!"

I was in communication with Tom and Saioa before our stay and they were always so helpful and informative. Saioa was extremely helpful during our stay and Sylvia and Benito did an excellent job of keeping the house and yard in great shape. The house is great and the pictures do accurately depict the house and the beach. The area itself is not what we were expecting- a little barren and brown due to the dry season, but that is no fault of anyone. With all of that being said, we did see and experience some troubling things while here. There was a family vacationing at the house across the street and I personally witnessed an individual peering over the fence/bushes into the backyard/pool area. I don't know what the intentions were but, to me, that is sketchy and someone looking for trouble. On Tuesday, May 3 we discovered a pool chair had been moved across the backyard and up against the fence by the pool shower. There were shoe prints and barbed wire fencing along the back of the property was broken when the individual jumped the fence. We called Saioa immediately- she came right away and called the patrolmen to come search the area. Looking back, it is obvious that someone was "casing" the house. On Thursday, May 5 some of us decided to go out for dinner. My mother-in-law had been sick all day so she and my father-in-law decided to stay at the house. We left, putting the bars back and locking the doors and gates behind us, not setting the alarm because people were HOME! We were gone about 45 minutes and came home to find our valuables gone, the back sliding glass door open and the "safety" bar sitting on the dining table. The barbed wire Benito fixed was broken again. My in-law's heard NOTHING in their room upstairs. We are thankful they didn't hear anything (i.e. the alarm) as my father-in-law surely would've tried to defend his family's possessions and may have gotten hurt. (Note: We did not know that the property had been broken into before.) We left a night early and Tom refunded our money for that night. Thank you.

Owner's Response: Yes this was indeed an unfortunate turn of events. And I am so sorry that it occurred. Kudos to you for seeing the positive! One can only bear in mind that travel any time, anywhere puts one at risk for such eventualities; Hotels, cruise ships and villas etc. all round the world strongly suggest locking doors, use of safes etc. Countries such as Spain are crawling with pick pockets; one has to be aware and take reasonable precautions. Travel insurance is recommended by all good agencies because of risk of thieving etc. Fortunately the likelihood of the above mentioned incident recurring can be minimized by vigilance and taking suitable precautions. Merely the flick of a switch in the kitchen would have armed the outside alarm and all of this could have been avoided. Tom
