The house was built in the mid 19th century with renovations in 2001 and 2009. We are located in the middle of the Lewes historic district with walkable charm for the entire family. Stroll to King's Ice Cream and The Chocolate Factory with the kids. Shop on Second Street. Short walk to Lewes-Rehoboth Canal and to the town beach, and a short bike ride to Cape Henlopen State Park for the incredible beaches there.
The house is perfect for family living, and has been enjoyed by many for family reunions and get togethers. The house is very private and is furnished with antiques and casual furniture, oriental rugs and paintings by local artists--you will feel at home, not in a rental.
The house lives like a modern house, with an open kitchen/breakfast nook/TV area, and separate formal dining and living room areas--great for privacy and togetherness at the same time. Everyone's favorite part of the house is the back porch--a Key West style screen porch with round dining table plus casual reading and relaxing area with seating for four. The backyard is completely private garden with a secluded hot tub in the corner--a must see.
There are two master suites--one on the ground floor level (with grab bars in bathroom) and one on the second floor. There are two additional bedrooms on the second floor--one with a queen bed and one with twin beds. One the top floor is a special kids retreat with a double bed, a twin bunk, and a smaller kid's bunk bed (decorated by our children for kids to escape from their parents).
House has bikes and a kayak for guests to use, and is fully-equipped for a great short or long holiday.

We bought this house in Lewes after years of renting in the Rehoboth area. We spent a week in Lewes and were captivated by its charm, and by the amazing beaches at Cape Henlopen. Our daughters love to bring their friends down for visits, and the house has been a very popular spot for our family reunions and get-togethers. We still marvel at the recreational opportunities here (cycling, running, tennis, golf, kayaking, and surfing) and at the beautiful small town full of great restaurants we can walk to.
Richard Smith purchased this house in 2005
We fell in love with the quiet charm of Lewes. Everything is so close, and you never even need to get in your car. Our kids walk all around town by themselves to shops, to market, and to get food and King's Ice Cream. The beaches are like Cape Cod with wildlife and beautiful dunes, not like most of the mid-Atlantic.
Very quiet oasis at the beach. Private rear yard feels like Key West. House is furnished like a house, not a rental, with antiques, oriental rugs and some paintings by local artists. You can walk to the market, the drug store, and the Chocolate Factory or King's Ice Cream plus a wide selection of restaurants. Feels like Nantucket or Cape Cod here.
I have previously left other reviews, and explained our enjoyment and pleasure with the home. We have now rented this home for the past several years and have continued to enjoy our stay. It has been a wonderful place for our family to get together. The home has needed minor repairs from time to time; which we have been happy and capable to do. Richard has been great to work with, and has continued to make arrangements to our needs. We wish them the best of luck in selling the home.
We would however, appreciate the refunding of our previous security deposits.
Fantastic "home"! More spacious than the description! Three family rooms, if you include the screened in back porch with ceiling fans. The private back yard with the hot tub is nestled among mature bamboo trees. Dad said the house reminded him of the one he and his 11 brothers and sisters grew up in. Formal dining room seats 6-8, kitchen counter/island with 3 bar stools, plus a table for two, in addition to a table and seating for several more on the back porch, gives lots of options for eating arrangements. Within a mile of Lewes Beach, which was a very pleasant walk with the nearby shops, restaurants, and canal. We all got some much needed and very enjoyable walking in! This is a very pet friendly town, with bowls of water for the dogs in front of outdoor cafe's. Lots of linen napkins, bath towels, and extra sheets and blankets. Ceiling fans and AC even kept the third floor attic bedroom surprisingly cool (which included a full bed and bunk which the younger kids loved)l. Even though we stayed 10 days, wish we'd had more time to explore the abundant library of books and read about Lewes history and explore the old cookbooks. Both of our dogs were welcomed, with Richard's permission. Hope to stay in this wonderful home again! Thanks for all Richard! Your home is a gem! We appreciate receiving our full refund of deposit also. Hope to visit again!
My family had a fabulous last minute Labor Day weekend in the charming house. The owner, Richard, made it even more special by letting us bring our dog who could be left at home because he had a broken leg! The pictures and description are acurate. The location is perfect if you want to park and walk around town. You do have to drive to the beach but although is was a crowded weekend, we quickly found parking at both the beach at the bay and in the state park.
The house has everything you need and is very comfortable. We loved the screen-in porch! We look forward to renting it in the future! Thanks again for allowing us to enjoy your terrific house!
Beginning with the communication with the owner, this rental was amazing. A truly lovely home, complete with everything, clean, well-maintained, and space for everyone to spread out and relax. The beds and the bedding are top, as was the decor, and amenities. For us, it was also very nice to have a first floor bedroom for a family member, have the dogs with us, and the hot tub was a huge hit, as it was quite chilly.
A very nice location, and walking distance to the lovely town with restaurants, shopping, and atmosphere. We would definitely repeat and recommend this!
Arrived in Lewes a week before my son's wedding and walked into the perfect house!Very homey and well equipped. Has everything you need including puzzles and books so pack light! The hot tub and back porch was put into daily use! Very cozy! We walked to Second St which was a delight! Great shops and restaurants! Also make sure you take the ferry to Cape May-wonderful day trip! And the weather was fantastic! Wonderful week and wonderful wedding! Thank you!
This house in downtown Lewes, DE was a perfect place to stay while attending the International Beachcombing Conference in October 2012. Six women shared this house, and thoroughly enjoyed all the amenities, as well as the proximity to the UD College of Marine Studies. The only downside was that we were so busy with the conference that we didn't get to take advantage of the kayaks, the bikes, and other opportunities offered by this special location!
We hope to be back in the near future! Might even bring my husband next time!
