Hartnett's Bluff House sits above a private rocky beach, close to the surf of the Atlantic Ocean. The house is a new construction (built in 2010 by the owners), cedar-shingled post and beam home that boasts an open concept layout. The main floor is open space flooded with views of the ocean from every angle. It contains a well-appointed kitchen with granite and butcher-block countertops and stainless steel appliances. There is a beautiful dining area with a large granite table that seats 6, and a living area with a comfy sofa and chairs perfect for lounging with friends and family, and gazing out at the ocean sunset. The main floor is complete with a powder room and a quaint seating area perfect for a game of chess or cards.
The upper floor reveals a gorgeous master suite with a heavenly king-size bed overlooking the water. A peaceful on-suite bathroom is complete with double sinks and a classic antique claw foot tub. There is also a cozy sitting area with comfortable chairs, ottomans, and reading lamps perfect for curling up with a book at the end of the day. A separate space off of the master has a small room with two twin beds that can be joined to create a king-sized bed, and makes a great kids room.
The lower floor contains a third bedroom with a queen-size bed with ocean views. The third bathroom is complete with a large open tiled shower, double sinks, and more windows looking out onto acres of rosa rugosa. Guests will also find a bonus entertainment room with a flat-screen TV and an L-shaped sofa which pulls out into a double bed for additional sleeping accommodations. There is also a laundry room with an energy-efficient washer and dryer for guests' convenience. Doors lead out onto a large deck complete with lounge chairs, a BBQ, a cold-water outdoor shower, and hammock, perfect for cooling off and relaxing after a long day at the beach!
Adjacent to the house is the path down to the private rocky beach, an excellent place to surf-cast and catch striped bass and bluefish, hunting for driftwood, shells and beautiful beach stones. Later in the season, this serves as a popular surf spot on the island, and provides a great spot to watch the surfers brave the waves!
The house runs exclusively on solar-power, with a wind-power back up source, and is most suited for the ecologically-minded. We hope this will attract guests who wish to leave a low carbon footprint, and have respect for the conservation of energy and resources. This will ensure the most comfortable and enjoyable stay in our home!
The property is located on the southwest corner of Block Island at the end of a rather long dirt road. The road is usually kept in good condition, which should allow easy access by any car. Since the house is located about 3 miles from town and the swimming beaches, a car is necessary. Due to the location of the property, the home allows for the privacy and tranquility that is most prized on Block Island.

We built this house on our 10 acre property in 2009/2010. The property itself has been in the family since 1946.
Our property is as far as you can get on the island from the crowds in town. It is very peaceful and quiet except for the sound of the surf. Since we are at the end of the road, there is no passing traffic.
The views from this house are wonderful. The kitchen is nicely equipped. The sheets and towels provided are attractive and clean. All of it is newish and not the sort of beat up left over type of things one sometimes finds appointing a rental house. Obvious care has been put to providing games, books, beach toys, and more. Noticeably missing is the musty smell common to many Block Island houses. We traveled to Block Island at the time of tropical storm Hermine. The owner could not have been more proactively helpful in advising and comforting us on our travel plans, having much more knowledge about the matter than we. A wonderful experience and vacation.
You go to an island to get away from it all. You go the Bluff House to really get away from it ALL. So secluded and beautiful. The house is smartly designed with its situation to the water in mind. Wherever you are in the house, you are looking out at the rolling waves lapping at the shore. The sunsets are breathtaking. We could have stayed for months!
This house is truly amazing. It's very clean, the ocean views are stunning, and there is plenty of room. Erin is so very sweet. On our last day there was a bad storm coming in and she called to give us ferry information and wanted to make sure we got off the island ok. This was my second time staying here and I definitly will be back.
Having the opportunity to hide away above the bluffs of Block with your family doesn't get any better unless of course you got to stay in Erin & Cully's house. The moment you walk in you feel as if you had been there your whole life . There is a true sense of peace that overtakes you, the sound of the ocean, the distant bell, the cool breezes.. this home is what I picture heaven to be. Our family favorites.. Watching the sunset in the infinity bed as we call it, taking a bath with an amazing view, a steam shower or outdoor cool off shower, watching all your children fish and just be together 500 feet below you as you hold hands and wonder if you are dreaming, cooking to loud Italian opera in one of the best kitchens we have ever cooked in just because it's fun, taking a nap in the hammock and waking up feeling more rested than you ever had, sitting out on the deck for hours never feeling closer to all the people you love and yet no one is speaking, just smiling. How can you review perfection? I don't really think you can.
Overall, a wonderful place to enjoy Block Island's quiet, relaxing atmosphere. Situated over a bluff on the west side of the island we watched the sun set and the waves come ashore every evening. Bluff House is quite large with an open floor concept on the main floor. Kitchen was extremely well stocked with utensils and pots and pans and everything worked! Downstairs is a third bedroom and a very nice tv area. One could spend all day just listening to the waves and watch the birds and be perfectly content. You're about ten minute drive to the main town so I think a car (or at least a bike) is necessary. Two minor negative notes--we had to make our own beds when we arrived which I found strange considering how much the place costs to rent and the bedside lamps downstairs had no lightbulbs. Also, recommend arriving during daylight hours as it's off the beaten path so not easy to find the first time. I'd definitely return! Great place for the whole family to relax and enjoy.
The property is on the southwest end of Block Island with wrap-around views of the ocean south and west. The high bluff the house is on gives you a huge sense of space, whether you are in the king bed master bedroom or the main floor dining and sitting areas. Nothing nicer or more relaxing than the ocean breeze passing through, the sound of the surf and of the faint tolling bell of the navigation buoy. The house was in excellent shape with everything clean, organized and in good repair. It's very private: at the end of a dead end lane, perfect to let young children run around the ample lawn area and down to the beach. A prior reviewer found the path down to the beach overgrown. But we did not. It has evidently been maintained since. Very comfortable for parents with 2-4 kids or two couples. Be sure to come with a car. The access is fine, but not really bike friendly!
