North Star is a Victorian home in the gaslight district of Petoskey, Michigan, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.

This 2400 square foot home was built in 1920 with a huge front porch and beautiful woodwork. The second floor was used as servants quarters, so makes it ideal for multiple families with an extra full kitchen, dining area and living room. Four bedrooms - two with queen beds, two with full beds and bunk beds. Additionally, the attic has been finished into a kid's area with television, futons, and games. To make your stay even easier you'll have access to laundry facilities in the basement.

Walk along the river, to the waterfront, and throughout the shopping district for unique finds and dining choices. Spend your days enjoying world class skiing, sledding, and ice skating in the winter, or swimming, playing golf, boating, canoeing, biking, fishing, walking, and more, in the summer. There is also a world class casino, Odawa, just a few miles away for gaming, dining, and shopping.

Amenities include: outdoor fire pit and gas grill, balcony and covered front porch, wi-fi, two refrigerators, two stoves, two microwaves, coffee maker, toaster and toaster oven, blender, washer and dryer, ironing board and iron. City water and sewer. Dishes, glasses, silverware, pots and pans. Board games, cards, three televisions with dvd/vcrs, and Apple tv.

Activities and Attractions: Minutes to Petoskey State Park, Boyne Highlands, Nubs Nob, Boyne Mountain, Odawa Casino, Little Traverse Wheelway bike path, Bear River for kayaking and fishing, Petoskey marina and beach, shopping and dining in historic downtown Petoskey and nearby Bay Harbor, Harbor Springs and Charlevoix.

About Stephanie Orth

I am a high school English and journalism teacher and my husband is an electrical engineer. I earned my bachelor's degree from CMU, master's from Wayne State. After several years in the advertising business, I stayed home with my girls until they were all in elementary school, then went back to school to get my teaching certificate. I now teach at Lake Orion High School. We have three daughters and live in Lake Orion.

Stephanie Orth purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Stephanie Orth chose Northern Michigan

I grew up with a cottage in Harbor Springs, owned by my grandparents. I fell in love with the area. My husband and I decided Petoskey was a little more our speed, and spent one weekend looking at houses for sale. We fell in love with the front porch, incredible wood trim, fire place, and potential to make the attic a play space for kids. The charming kitchens - two, making having more than one family here a breeze - were a huge bonus. Add in the carriage house with a second floor, wonderful neighbors, and ability to walk everywhere, and we were sold.

What makes this cottage unique

Our family loves to downhill ski all winter and this location offers 3 world class ski hills within 15 minutes. In the summer, we stroll downtown Petoskey trying all of the quaint restaurants and sandwich shops, and of course, ice cream shops. We love walking along Bear River and out to the lighthouse where our children will spend hours jumping from the break wall into the bay. We also enjoy biking along the Wheelway into Charlevoix for lunch, and back again.

Quaint, comfortable, spacious historic home.

Realize its an old home and floors will squeak -- just adds to the charm. Kitchen had everything we needed. Very clean. Very organized, efficient space. The attic play space was a big hit for the kids. Adults had places to relax and feel comfortable. Feels very spacious. Excellent water pressure in shower. Use of laundry area a bonus. Keeps the old charm, with 'period appropriate' updates. I wouldn't change a thing. Hope to stay again.

Weekend retreat

  • 5 of 5

We came up from Chicago with some young adults from our church. nOrthstar was a great weekend for us; we could come and go when we pleased, play some music, make our own food, etc. And it's walking distance to downtown Petoskey so that's great. And it's by the river which is gorgeous.

The hosts were gracious with timing and departures. The neighbor removed the perpetually falling snow so many times in our three days up north. Great guy:)

The home is beautiful with so much room for the 11 of us. Thanks Stephanie!

Wonderful Home!

  • 5 of 5

We had 6 adults and three kids. This house was more space than we even needed. It was so beautiful, I think all of us wanted to stay much longer.

This house has everything one would need for a very special stay in Petoskey. The house was very clean and well kept.It is a very convenient location and plenty of room.

Thank you for the perfect place! We would love to come back soon.

This house is huge!

  • 4 of 5

We took a family vacation with seven adults and 7 kids. This house has more than enough room for a group our size. The kids loved the third floor room with games, movies, etc. The parents loved that we couldn't hear them up there 😄򑀠The house is in a great location, everything is walkable with great trails, shopping and food. We would definitely stay here again!

Loved the house and enjoyed our stay

  • 5 of 5

This house is great! It's a great location, walking distance to downtown, but on a nice quiet street. The house itself is huge- we had plenty of room. It's an old house but well-kept and very charming inside. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay here again next time we come to Petoskey!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your review, I'm so glad you liked the house! We are having the shower faucet fixed this week - thank goodness, that's going to be a huge water bill! Thanks again!

This house is so charming with its many rooms, color schemes, cleanliness and accommodations for all ages of guests. Two families stayed in the house but several family members were hosted for meals.
