Casa de Memphis II is located at the little known north entrance to Playa Pelada where the Nosara River meets the Pacific Ocean. This private beach house is part of a collection of 8 private houses surrounded by the beach on one side and the ostional wildlife refuge on the other. There is only one road in or out and few people are aware that this section exist. This location is very private yet still very convenient to restaurants, grocery stores and everything else the community of Nosara has to offer.
The location is what makes this small community so special. With the ocean on one side, the Ostional wildlife area on the other and the Nosara River meets the Pacific Ocean near by, the area is a Mecca for wildlife. Because of the peaceful coexistence between the home owners and the natural surroundings, the wildlife literally comes to the door of the house. If you are looking for private seclusion surrounded by peace and quiet, this is it. That is until a flock of parrots land in the tree above and the neighborhood monkey troop join in, then it gets a little noisy, but they were there first.
The house is a one minute walk to the beach and is located around the corner from the original Casa de Memphis I. (Some people perfer to rent two seperate houses at the same time so as to lessen “family dymanics”) Constructed in the style of the surrounding community; this one story two bedroom house is set up for the traveling family. One bedroom has a queens size bed and the other has two set of custom made punk beds. Both bedrooms have private baths with walk in showers. There is a twin bed in the main room up in the loft. There is also a private one bedroom cabina with its own private bathroom, garden, hammock and outdoor furniture that is only accessed by a private bridge over a stream. Together they will sleep 9 people. Both the house and the cabina are fully air conditioned, and has all of the amenities of home including, private pool, beach towels, beach chairs, cable TV, wireless internet, fully equipped kitchen, outdoor grill, pool chairs, telephone, monitored alarm system and more. The house and cabina are only rented out together, never separately.
Important: The house has a water storage system that will supply all of your water needs when local water company is forced to shut off the entire water system in times of draught during the evening hours. This usually happens around 16:00 and is not turned back on until the system fills back up the next morning. This is a big issue to most of the other houses that do not have this system. Casa de Memphis guest will never even know it!
Because the house sits at the end of a road there is no through traffic, noise or the associated dust commonly found elsewhere.
Security: Costa Ricans are by nature a very passive people. That said petty theft is an on going issue. Nothing neutralizes this issue more than common since. CdM I & II have monitored alarm systems and 400 pounds safes bolted to the floor. No other house available for rent has this level of security.
Tired of cooking? We can arrange for a private chef to do all of the shopping, come to the house and prepare the menu of your choice at a mere fraction of what dinning out would be. This is the best bargain in Nosara and the wife of the owner of the house takes full advantage of this. Imagine, someone comes to the house at 17:00 (5PM), cleans, prepares dinner, cleans up afterwards and departs by 20:00 (8PM). Cost: $25 plus groceries. Tell us what you want and we will make it happen.
NOTE: Nosara, like many other beach communities, is experiencing a building boom. The northern end of Playa Pelada, where the house is located, is the only location free from the early morning construction noise, truck traffic and the associated dust. Dust is a serious issue from December to May. While there is very little traffic in front of the house we still apply molasses to the road out front to seal off the dust. Place smells like pancakes.
Booking: There are two ways to book Casa de Memphis I or II. VIA OWNER: simply send the owner an email stating which house and what dates you want. His reply will confirm the dates and the rate. If this is agreeable then the owner will send you a rental agreement to print out, read, sigh and return with a deposit in the form of a US dollar check or Canadian post order. 60 days prior to your arrival you will send in the whole rental fee. Your deposit converts to a security deposit and is refunded back to you after you depart. VIA CREDIT CAED: VRBO now has a book it now feature where you can use a credit card for the whole process. You will need to purchase a $49 security deposit policy that is non refundable. The choice is yours. The House is owned by David & Mary Caywood. David flies for FedEx and Mary is a retired advertising executive. They own two house's, known as CdM I & II. This is their favorivte of the two and they stay here three months of the year.
Dave Caywood purchased this house in 2010
We bought the original Casa de Memphis I in 2007 and naturally we got to know the area and many of the locals very well. One of them was our neighbor, Richard Moffat. Mary loved Richards’s house and so when he decided to move closer to his son in the central valley, we bought the house and it became known as Casa de Memphis II. The two houses are just around the corner from one another, only 75 yards apart.
We enjoy walking to everything. Because the roads are so convoluted most people use the beach to get around. After a while you learn the trails through the jungle and the result is that the community is not so fragmented.
What a great trip. Casa De Memphis II was the perfect house in an amazing location for our family trip.
The property is laid out ideally to allow family members to have their own space when needed, while the pool and family room were outstanding common areas. In fact, the pool was used almost non-stop.
The Nosara area was great too. Playa Pelada next to the house is a little quieter - had the beach to ourselves many times, while a short walk or drive allows you to be at busier beaches. There are a number of options in restaurants in Playa Pelada, which are walking distance. Playa Guiones is only a few minute drive away, and is more bustling - although still very laid back. Surf lessons were a fun family activity in Guiones.
The Casa De Memphis owners - Dave - and manager - Tiffany - were also very helpful both in advance and upon our arrival. Again, a great trip!
All vacation experiences are subjective. I'm glad people enjoyed their stay and gave it 5 stars. That was not our experience. For starters, it would have been nice to know before, or if it started after our rental agreement, that the water is turned off every day from between 3:30-5:00 in the afternoon and resuming between 7:30 and 9:30 in the morning. As part of the rental agreement, whenever you leave the building, it must be locked, the alarm set, the AC and fans turned off. This involves: locking your valuables in the safe, with 2 padlocks, locking the back door gate with a padlock, then locking the back door with a key, then locking the front door with a key, then locking the front gate with a padlock, but before you do that, arming the security system. Sometimes one of us forgot something, so the entire front door scenario had to be done again. As two, single ladies, we locked the gates and the doors from the inside at night too. We had to get a locksmith over because the front door key was bent and didn't always work and the rear door key started having issues by the time we left. It concerned us if we needed to leave in a hurry. As for Peace and Quiet, it can be, depending on who is in the rental next door. The houses are very close and the swimming pools allow for the sound to travel. We were lucky in the beginning, but the last days we had a group young people that started drinking their margaritas early, so by lunch the loud laughing, inappropriate language, and music started. We did mention, on their first day, about how sound travels, but tequila made them forget. The house is not on the beautiful beach, a 5 min. walk away, and the pool was the saving grace. The driving is terrible, the roads full of potholes, but in order to get decent groceries, you need one. Get Insurance! Someone at Super Nosara put a ding in my car. If I didn't have the insurance, I'd have been out quite a lot! There is lots to do in Playa Guiones, a long walk down the beach, but really nothing around this house. The kitchen and utensils were not very clean, nor organized, and the track light needs fixing/replacing as it's got a short. An electrician came, but never returned. Shorts can cause fires! The crashing noises on the roof - Ctenosaurs! Similar to Iguanas, they soak up the sun in the gutters. We left a day early, because of the water /laundry issue and I'm still waiting for my refund.
My family and I arrived at this amazing house and enjoyed every single moment. There was plenty of space for our family of 6 and most importantly, it was very comfortable. With the fish we caught with Nosara fishing, we easily prepared meals with the kitchen and most importantly had the opportunity to eat together at one table. The pool was great, the cabina was really nice (that's where my wife and I stayed), and most importantly, we were close to the beach.
You can tell so much about a place when you run into the neighbors. I can assure you that the neighbors really made the trip special. We heard about the monkeys and were willing to get up at 5 a.m., to see them. Fortunately, one of the neighbors heard that we wanted to see the wildlife and made sure we did. Richard called us outside around 7:30 a.m. and pointed out the pack of monkeys moving through the trees right across the street! Like I said, the neighbors really made the experience special.
I could not recommend a better house or experience.
Just the most awesome place! Walk down the beach, enjoy the pool, nice a/c at night, TV/Netflix, good restaurants a walk down the road (or on the beach too). The house was clean, prepared, and is a relaxing place to recover from your adventures.
There are bars on all the windows and doors (expected in high theft areas), an alarm system to use when you leave, and a huge safe. My only concern with this setup is that there is no quick exit in an emergency. The doors and gates lock from the inside and require fiddling with keys to gain entry/exit. There is also the possibility, albeit a bonehead possibility, of locking yourself in the house... The padlocks on the gates lock without a key which means if you don't have the key you will not be able to exit the house. I would recommend changing the padlocks to either a combination or the kind that require a key to lock. However, this is a small issue that should not present a problem for most people.
The house is great like I said, but Playa Pelada is not for the pampered traveller. Lots of bugs, crabs, dust, bumpy rides, stray dogs, petty theft, but these are minor inconveniences for anyone who knows how to appreciate natural sanctuaries and enjoy life. During our visit the town had to turn the water off for at least 12 hours every night, but there was plenty of fresh drinking water that was made available for us at the house... Much appreciated!
My husband and another couple recently stayed at Casa de Memphis II. From the time of the booking until the end of the stay, David and Tiffany, the house manager, were available for any questions and very helpful and knowledgeable of the area. The home was very comfortable and clean. We enjoyed the pool and outdoor area. The walk to the ocean was an easy five minutes. The sunsets were amazing! Loved the location as we could walk down to nearby restaurants for a bite to eat. Loved the ambience of LaLuna! I highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a get away in Costa Rica!
We had a wonderful 2 weeks at this house over Christmas and New Year. We have rented from Dave before and met up with Tiffany many times. We arrived a bit early so the house wasn't ready but we sat on the porch and read and the boys went surfing. We enjoyed the sounds of the wildlife all around, particularly the birds and the monkeys early in the morning and all the lovely walks we went on right from the house. In fact we had a really lazy 2 weeks only leaving the villa to shop, surf or go looking for monkeys. The kitchen was well equipped to prepare some lovely meals and the pool was lovely to relax by. We found it easier to just use the door on the back porch, it saved having to check locks and padlocks every time we wanted to sunbathe by the pool. We did make use of the safe and were glad we did as our neighbours had their passports stolen and had to spend valuable holiday time getting new ones. We didn't use the loft sleeping area, it's quite steep to get up to and I think it would be quite warm up there so I am not sure who it would really appeal to. Cabana was great though and gave an extra bit of privacy for the friend who was travelling with us. Only downside was that the surf wasn't the best - maybe next time?!!
Yoga, Nature walks, Zip line, Canopy tours, Monkey Watching, ATV rental and tours, yacking with locals, language instruction and riding horses through the jungle and on to the beach. There is a bat cave near by and numerous trails to explore that wind through the jungle.
