Our home is located on the 'quiet side' of Mount Desert Island, surrounded by Acadia National Park. It is the childhood home of our girls and the vacation home of my Ohio family, and has proven to be the perfect place for extended family gatherings. The large family room is set back from the road and affords ample space for family fun or a quiet place to cozy up by the fire. Our album collection is available to listen to and for the musically inclined, a piano, organ and conga drum. We love games, so we provide many board games and puzzles for your recreational pleasure as well as a large screen television, pool and foosball tables, and Wi-Fi.
The kitchen is fully equipped and has a butcher block counter for ease of meal preparation. The dining room is spacious and has a wonderful view of the harbor. Off of the dining room is a mother-in-law suite, which includes a bedroom with a king-sized bed, bathroom, and kitchenette. Three bedrooms are on the second floor, two of which have ocean views and queen sized beds. The third has two twin beds and looks out to the backyard.. The sunroom located upstairs also overlooks the harbor, and has a daybed with a spare twin mattress tucked underneath.
We are within walking distance to town where you can find a generous selection of restaurants and shops. There is also an oceanarium, bird carving museum and all the amenities a year-round village has to offer. Across the street and down the hill, you will find the Great Harbor Marina, formerly Stinson's Cannery. There are many hiking trails within a ten minute drive as well as swimming at Echo Lake beach, the Bluffs or the Ledges. There is golf at The Causeway Club, bike, canoe, and boat rentals, and miles of rock bound shore to explore.
We welcome you to Mount Desert Island and look forward to serving you!
I ran the Bar Harbor half marathon with a college friend in September and we both brought our parents and her aunt and uncle. We fit 8 people very comfortably in this wonderful home. We were able to play games together each night in the great room, we played pool, did a puzzle, and my friend's dad loved being able to play the piano all weekend. We loved being in Southwest Harbor, off the beaten path a little but still having a town to wander through. We were across the street from a lobster house and Grumpy's which is an awesome little local place. The pier across the street also had a great little fundraising party while we were there which was fun. Suzanne was a lovely host and very easy to work with. Upon return I would definitely stay here again.
We had such a great time in this home! Plenty of room, fully stocked kitchen, and such a comfortable and welcoming and beautiful place! We had 7 adults and a baby and had plenty of room! And the location was perfect! So glad we did not stay in Bar Harbor where everything is so touristy. We kayaked on a nearby pond, hiked on nearby trails, loved the little village town where we picked up fresh lobster to cook every night. And Suzanne was just an email away, although we didn't need a thing. Thank you - we will be back!!
This home is large and perfectly suited for a large family or group but also worked well for our two couples. Other reviews have noted the bathroom on the second floor is entered through one of the bedrooms but this is not a huge deal considering all of the other features the home offers. The den/family room is where you will spend most of your time and it is large. The foosball table, pool table, entertainment center and fireplace make it hard to leave! All of the bedrooms are spacious and the entire home is spotless. The kitchen is high end and well stocked and there is an additional small kitchen area in the rear of the first floor. After spending time in Bar Harbor with the crowds, we were glad that we chose this more quiet location. It seems a world away but is actually only a few minutes from Bar Harbor and Acadia. The front of the home overlooks the harbor where we watched an eclipse of the moon during our stay. The owner met us on arrival and was very gracious. We would definitely stay here in the future.
Pictures represent home well. Owner is easy tp work with, and wants you to enjoy your stay. Great location to see all of MDI, and a straight shot into Ellsworth.
Plenty of parking, house is spotless. Loved the fireplace (wood provided) and pool table. Kitchen was well stocked, included all basics, plus a great BUNN coffeemaker! Nice yard with fire pit and charcoal grill. Great home to share with friends or family!
Two possible concerns
1. 3 of the bedrooms are upstairs, but only one bath - which is IN one of the bedrooms. So the others must use the bath on the first floor.
2. There are multiple steps, 1/2 steps, and double steps throughout the house.
Both of these could be a non-issue depending upon the make up of your group -those who are physically handicapped, or young toddlers could have issues. Otherwise, no concerns.
We would rent this home again, and can easily recommend it to others.
It was a pleasure staying here - thank you for sharing it.
We rented this house for two families with a total of four adults and four children, ages 6-11. It was the perfect home base for Acadia National Park; we were close to the entire park and just a 10-minute drive to parts of it. This is the quiet side of the island and not touristy like Bar Harbor but it is easy to get to Bar Harbor for food or shopping.
The house has a gigantic family room with a pool table and every possible entertainment amenity. The kitchen is fully stocked with dishes and cooking tools and drawers and cabinets are labeled, which is a brilliant idea. If you get tired of cooking we recommend the pizza and baked goods at Little Notch.
Hosts were gracious and generous, and answered even the tiniest questions quickly. They even replaced a phonograph needle for us so we could show our kids how a record player works. :)
One note: the house has five bedrooms, including the downstairs apartment. One of the upstairs bedrooms has its own bathroom but the room is accessible only through another bedroom. This worked fine for us but might be useful information.
We would rent this house again.
This was our second visit to this nice home. The layout works for a Maine getaway. Ample room in the bedrooms and bathrooms, well appointed kitchen and with a giant washer and dryer setup..
The stove is one made for a chef and it was used to its potential by my family. The fireplace is enormous and is the centerpiece for the family room which includes a pool table, piano & Cable TV among the entertainment.
We love the place and have made memories to last, not once but twice in a roll.
