My great grandparents traveled from Portugal to the Hawaiin Islands and settled in Maui in the late 1800s. I was born in Maui and reared in Oahu. I went to Farrington High School and graduated when I was 17. I was married the same yr. and also had my first child. By the time I was 21, I had 4 children. I moved to San Diego in 1960, remarried and had my 5th child. I went into Real Estate sales in San Diego and sold RE for 20 yrs. By that time I had several rentals and retired from RE and lived off the income of my rentals. It was hard work
but it paid off in time.
My husband Gary loved fishing and when we went to Kona for a vacation, he fell in love with it.
We wanted to build our home here, so we looked for a lot. We both wanted to
be by the ocean, however, it was slim pickings finding a lot on the ocean or by the ocean. We heard about Kona Paradise from a Realtor who showed us our lot. We were so excited because not only was it ocean front but it also was a swimming beach. It is very rare in Kona to have a beach that you can walk into and swim or snorkel without having to cross over sharp lava rocks.
It is so wonderful to just sit and listen to the waves washing thru the pebbles on the beach. In the winter time when the surf high, it is such a beautiful sight to see the large waves crashing down on the beach. I love watching the whales as they go by to settle in the coves south of us and birth their calfs before going back up north. I also love to see the dophins that come and visit our cove. My huband and I would anchor our boat in the cove and then go fishing. Just a few miles out we would catch a lot of fish that we'd share with our wonderful friends and nieghbors. Kona Paradise is truly paradise.
THIS IS JUST A GREAT VACATION RENTAL.....AWESOME DECK, VERY COMFORTABLE OPEN LAYOUT, GREAT VIEWS AND ACCESS TO BEACH.....DEFINITELY RECOMMEND TO ANYONE WANTING TO RELAX IN PARADISE!
It is not often that we are able to round up our grown kids for a 'family vacation' but were looking for a place to stay after they participated in the Lava Man Triathlon. Viewed this house online and it looked perfect - and it met all expectations and more. Just steps from the beach and everything was thoughtfully provided for us to fully enjoy our stay. We took advantage of the large lanai and spent much of our time enjoying the quiet, scenic property, evening sunsets and family dinners. Located close to the Captain Cook area, where we took in a snorkel boat tour. We would definitely look for the chance to stay here again and will recommend to our friends.
We enjoyed our stay in this comfortable Hawaiian home, which features an open air approach to living. The result is freshness and a connection to the ocean and the island. The beach and cliffs provided continuous entertainment. The house is very well stocked, and very roomy, especially the lanai. This had evidently been the owners' dream home, and their attention to detail is apparent, although, like many rental properties, things are a little tired in some areas. The road to the house is daunting at first, but we got used to it very quickly. The location is great, about a 45-minute drive to Kailea-Kona, but much less than that to local shops, including an excellent BBQ / poke place (Big Jakes Island BBQ) about 15 minutes to the north, on the right.
My best time was sitting on the beach with the waves breaking over me, the water was so warm. The house was awesome and has everything you could ever need. The location is private and peaceful with great views from the deck and steps away to a real cool black pebble beach, it was our private little piece of paradise for a week. The road wasn't really a problem, we just went slow. We found the commute into Koan and the surrounding attractions easy to navigate. Thank you for having a crock-pot, we cooked a pot roast with all the trimmings for our guests one night and it made dinner a no brainier for me. The main fridge went out the day before we arrived but they supplied a freezer and a small fridge that were just fine. It was a very pleasant stay.
Just one request, more wasp spray and a fly swatter, I'm allergic and a bee got in the house, a fly swatter would help.
And porch cushions need steam cleaning.
We loved staying just yards from the beach. It was so relaxing to hear the ocean all day and night, and to watch people frolicking in the ocean. The home was very comfortable and had all the conveniences of home - and then some. We met some very friendly folks at the beach, and residents in the neighborhood were friendly when you passed by. Yes, the road to the house is steep, but all you have to do is take your time and enjoy the flowers, mongoose, birds, and view on your way down. We tried to come home before sunset, and this seemed to make the road less intimidating.
The lanai was where we spent most of our time, and there were several seating options depending on your mood. We used the BBQ and ate outside almost every day.
There were plenty of beach toys, along with snorkel gear, water shoes, sunscreen and bug repellent. We took advantage of what was there on several occasions. We washed our clothing and towels in the onsite laundry room several times. Knowing it was there ahead of time allowed us to pack less clothing (and take more home!)
The location was a small surprise, as in our mind Captain Cook was further North. We didn't realize that Captain Cook really encompasses a large area. This was fine with us, as we were closer to the Volcano and to our favorite fruit stand on the island. The nearest grocery stores are 30 minutes North, or 30 minutes South - so we did whatever was most convenient depending on our plans for the day. The most inexpensive place to get gas is at Costco, so we filled up every time we were near it and that worked out great.
The only problem we had was the refrigerator stopped working a few days into our stay. Mike was quick to respond and bring us a small freezer and ice, and then a small refrigerator to see us through the rest of our stay. He couldn't have been nicer or more helpful.
The house is very well laid out with a spacious kitchen and comfortable bedrooms. The best feature, though, is the fantastic porch and ocean view. A truly marvelous place to relax and watch the waves roll in. We also appreciated the fact that it was so close to the beach, with good swimming and snorkeling. It is not, however, close to much in the way of nightlife or shopping so we needed to make sure we had everything we wanted since a quick trip to the store wasn't an option. That's no downside, though, for people looking for a lovely place to get away from it all.
Walk the historic Kings Trail - steps from the house.
