.Rent The Lakehouse and The Treehouse together, on a weekly basis, like a compound for family reunions, 'big chill' friends' reunions or company retreats. NEW FOR 2014 - AIR CONDITIONING! The cottage homes are warm and fun - decorated in bright and cheery Maine 'cottage colors.' We think they are a little 'cheeky.' Both were originally small camps that have been added onto and contemporized by the architect owner. The Lakehouse, redesigned in the 90s, is a 3-story tower with 5 decks just 20 feet from the water. It has 3BR, 2 full BA, and sleeps 8. (2 queen BR, 1 twin BR, 1 queen sleep sofa at lower/lake level.) The Treehouse, redesigned in 2004, is just behind the Lakehouse, and has lake glimpses and opens to private, quiet woods. It has 4BR, 2 full BA, and sleep 10. (2 queen BR, 2 twin BR, queen sleep sofa in living room.
The houses are phenomenally well equipped, right down to lobster crackers and pics, corn holders, flour sifters, electric mixers, blenders, and well – even garlic presses! The Lakehouse is outfitted with dinnerware for 8 and the Treehouse for 18. There is a washer/dryer in each house. Bed pad, blanket, pillow, and either comforter or spread on each bed. Phones & wifi in each cottage. Lots and lots of fine entertainment amenities at both cottages, including gas grills, books and board games, stereo systems (radio/tape/CD,) TVs, and DVDs. VHS players at Treehouse . Ping pong table in the huge, lower level, Lakehouse rec room! Linen service available - four packages.
There are spectacular sunsets from the LH glass room and 4 decks. There is an additional deck, plus dock and float at the water. Also 2 canoes are avai
(Useful info: We seem to have collected life vests in a variety of sizes, including baby, toddler, and adult.) The lake is sandy and shallow at the shore. Perfect for small children’s wading and play. There is great fishing from the dock and it’s an easy swim to the float. Abundant wildlife; loons, blue herons, deer, neighborhood cats, etc. Caterers can be hired for that “special” birthday, anniversary, or just summer celebration clambake, lobster dinner, roast, etc. There is a Boat and Jet Ski rental nearby.
The cottages are located on the east shore of Highland Lake and are just 20 minutes from shopping, dining, whale watches, and museums in Portland, and 35 minutes from super shopping in Freeport (LL Bean and many outlet stores).
We hope to share these wonderful places with you. Be well, Frank and Denise

Our family of 17 had a wonderful time at the Lakehouse and Treehouse. The houses are unique and we kept finding interesting treasures as the week went on. The places were clean, and well appointed. The views from the Lakehouse were magnificent. Everyone enjoyed swimming in the lake and playing on the raft. We had hoped to bring our boat but it had a small accident and wasn't able to come.
Denise was very prompt in answering our questions and concerns.
The only thing we didn't anticipate was the amount of stairs.. the bathrooms are on the second floor of the Lakehouse, and the living room, dining room and kitchen were on the third floor. The exit to the lake and yard was on the first floor, so there was a lot of climbing for the 2 seventy five year olds in the family.
We ate at the Treehouse for the most part because of there being such a lovely open area for lounging, and two dining room tables close to each other so we all could eat at the same time,
I could go on and on about how interesting and well Pointed the houses were.
We rented both houses for a family reunion for my wife's family which consisted of 4 adult couples and 2 sinlge adults, plus 9 children ranging from 6 weeks old to age 8.
The homes themselves were great and in the condition described in the listing. I wish I had known in advance that there was no air conditioning but now that I'm talking with others, that's pretty much standard in all of Maine for a rental property so the fact that it wasn't on there certainly does not reflect poorly on the property or the listing itself. The lake is very nice. It's large enough to do boating and other activities without feeling crowded, but it's not so large that there are a million people flocking to the lake for the day and filling it up and making you worry about the safety of children swimming around the dock. And it's a great temperature for swimming, kayak, canoe, etc.
The owners were very attentive to our needs, as we had an unexpected plumbing emergency in the kitchen at 4:30am. They answered our call right away and had a plumber there to fix it by 7:30am, and this was on the July 4th holiday.
The only reason I'm leaving 4 stars instead of 5 is that the write-up doesn't make it clear the treehouse is across the street from the lakehouse. So while it is "just behind" in the truest sense, the write up could leave people with the impression that they physically occupy the same piece of property. There were 10 adults in our group all reading through the listing before selecting a house, and when we showed up we all had the same reaction that the listing made it seem to us that they were sharing land rather than across the street. With young children in the group (even those who are 8), it was unsafe to let them walk in between the two properties without an adult chaperone. The street is calm and remote for the most part, but there were definitely some cars flying down it at 35+mph at random times that would give me pause in letting a child cross the road unattended.
I'd definitely recommend the two homes for groups with mostly older children or all adults, as the distance between the houses is short and for those who are older would have no safety issues with crossing roads.
We really wanted to do something special for my parents 50th wedding anniversary. My family consists of 5 sisters and 5 brothers all ages from 26 to 49 and spread out in Michigan, Illinois, Virginia & Georgia. We research places for well over a year to find that perfect place to get away to. As anyone can imagine, it is very difficult to accommodate and make everyone happy. Well, this Vacation Get Away came through. Everyone was extremely pleased with everything. In fact, as hard as it may be to believe, I cannot remember any complains from any of the siblings. Believe me that is rare. Being just outside of Portland gave us tons of things to do. Portland is an Awesome port city with a lot of character. Having two separate houses worked out perfect. The Tree House was the gathering house were everyone came together for big dinners and even an incredible lobster bake. The lake house right on the water with gorgeous views, canoes and an excellent area for swimming was the hanging out house.
Wireless High Speed Internet in both houses, Very Clean and Well Kept, Fully Furnished Kitchens in both houses, BBQ grills in both houses, Washer & Dryer in both, and plenty of room for parking. This setup worked out perfect leaving us wanting for nothing.
Denise & Frank, thanks so much for helping to make our family vacation truly special. Of everything we looked at while trying to pick the best spot for us, we all liked yours the best and we all that we made the right decision. Thanks again and I hope to make it back there in the near future.
Sincerely and in Great Appreciating,
My family of 11 adults and 3 kids spent a week at the Lakehouse / Treehouse in July. The owners, Frank and Denise, met us upon arrival and made sure we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. There were also detailed lists of "things to know" posted in both kitchens which was very handy.
We happened to arrive at the height of the heat wave so the fans in every room were a godsend. By the second night, it had cooled off significantly and we all pulled on sweats when sitting outside to roast marshmallows or do a little night time fishing.
The houses had everything we could have possibly needed and then some. The rooms were very tidy and the beds comfortable. It was great to have so many bedrooms / bathrooms when traveling with such a big group. The sunroom in the lake house was gorgeous and many a morning was spent in the ridiculously comfortable chairs drinking our morning coffee. The kids took turns napping in the hammock...and so did the adults.
We had so many day trips planned but ended up spending the whole 7 days at the houses (save for the usual trips to the grocery store). We had only 1 day of bad weather and even that was in the late afternoon after we finished swimming for the day. The lake temperature was perfect and I would recommend a pair of water shoes to easily navigate the rocky shallows near the dock. The fish were plentiful and the boys were in "catch and release" heaven. Schools of minnows hung out around the dock and provided plenty of entertainment for the kids.
The commercial washer and dryer were great and made it easy to have clean, dry beach towels everyday. Also, everyone went home with a suitcase full of clean clothes which made coming home from vacation just a little bit easier.
As a side note: We opted for the sheets / towels package and I highly recommend you do the same. It saved on packing and planning!
I highly recommend the lakehouse / treehouse for anyone traveling with a large group that needs just a little extra space and all the comforts of home!
My family of 15 stayed at both the lakehouse and the treehouse for our fourth of July long weekend. We were greeted by the friendly owners Denise and Frank upon arrival. They informed us of local events and activities so that we wouldn't feel lost.
Both houses were kept in great condition - no hygiene issues. Lakehouse had an incredible view of the lake and was meticulously designed with a modern theme. Treehouse was a completely different atmosphere. You can imagine yourself being in a real treehouse!
There was not a single moment where we found ourselves with nothing to do during the stay - bbq, swim, canoe, fish, observe the fireworks, and more. Well worth the 6-hour drive from NYC.
