Constructed in the 1960's by a local engineer/builder, this Art Deco house was originally a gift to his daughter. She was a prima ballerina and a loved celebrity in Merida. This house is dedicated to her talent and her life.
Located in the Santiago neighborhood of Centro Merida (fondly referred to as 'Gringo Gulch') this lovingly restored two story tropical home is in the heart of an area that is rated as one of the best from which to explore all that the beautiful city of Merida has to offer. Close to many restaurants, shops, medical facilities, this house is a 2 block walk to The Merida English Library, 2 blocks to Santiago Square, 3 blocks to Santa Lucia Square and a 9 block walk to the Plaza Grande (Zocolo).
Newly restored and updated, the house retains the allure and charm of it's original period design while offering contemporary updates and modern amenities. Ceiling heights in all rooms are 11', which gives the house a lofty and airy feel while still maintaining intimacy which can be lacking in older colonial homes. Individually controlled air conditioning units, pressurized and softened water system, kitchen with dishwasher and microwave (and exit to the terrance and pool), beautifully outfitted bathrooms contribute to the comfort of this home.
Upstairs, both comfortable bedrooms have queen beds, custom-padded headboards, individually controlled air conditioning units and ceiling fans. They have French doors that open onto the second level terrace that offers cooling breezes, custom-designed, locally crafted furniture and tree-top views of the distant cathedral towers. Beautiful mood lighting make this a spectacular area for evening cocktails and entertaining.
Below in the garden, the filtered plunge pool was inspired by local 'cenotes' (the Yucatan's famous subterranean hidden fresh water lagoons). Large enough for 4 to 6 people, the lighted pool is backed by a blue rock wall that was hand built by local Maya stone workers. Flanking the pool are tropical plants that surround and envelope it with their huge undulating, exotic leaves. Finally, an outdoor shower completes this serene garden and pool setting.
We have traveled to many destinations in Mexico and ultimately chose Merida as a place to purchase vacation property based on the history, culture and warmth of the people in this beautiful city. This home had been neglected for many years when we discovered it and we have given it a total renovation to return it to its original beauty and charm, while updating the systems to modern standards.
We frequently visit and enjoy our house. When we are not in Merida, we offer it as a comfortable vacation getaway in the heart of this vibrant urban destination.
The Owner purchased this house in 2006
Merida was our city of choice for vacation property ownership because of the culture, warmth and friendly spirit of the local residents, ease of travel, safety of the community and access to shopping and excellent medical care.
Airport pick up is available at an additional charge.
English-speaking property managers are local residents.
Food shopping, cultural activities and restaurants are a short walk from the house.
You can be relaxing on the sunny Gulf of Mexico beaches after a 40 minute drive north of the city.
Close proximity to the historical Mayan world and ruins of Chichen Itza and Uxmal are within a 2 hour drive.
We spent five weeks in Casa Paul and absolutely loved it! The home itself is lovely with handsome decor, a great patio and cenote, comfortable beds, and an amazing fully-equipped kitchen. The location is excellent-within walking distance to almost any place we wanted to go but far enough away from the chaos closer to Plaza Grande. In addition, Merida Rentals, the management company, was superb. Javier, Carlos and LeAnn were always available and willing to go above and beyond. We can highly recommend this property to anyone vacationing in Merida.
A great place in a great location. Well equipped and centrally located for easy access to all our needs. We had a very enjoyable stay.
We loved Casa Paul and the location. The Casa is very comfortable, stylish, and well equipt. The location is minutes away from a wonderful local market, grocery store, and in walking distance to downtown and many great places to eat. The Merida English Libray is very close and the volunteer staff is very helpful. We attended the Libray sponsored home tour one morning and wine tasting one evening.
The pictures do not do the Casa justice. We plan to go back next year for two weeks. We cannot say enough nice things about the owner, the Casa, or Merida. We are totally hooked.
Paul's house is incredible, and one of the best rentals I've ever used. The house is enormous, spacious, and has air conditioning in every room. And the cenote! It was so nice to dip into this after a long hot day, and then read on the patio. The pictures here really don't do it justice.
We had some issues with hot water the first day, but as they provided a cell phone with the management's numbers, we called them to ask about it and they came by immediately to turn up the boiler. Really excellent attention to this.
We would not hesitate to return here, and you should not hesitate to book this place. For those worried about safety, don't. The place is VERY secure, and on a quiet, quiet street very close to Merida's zocalo.
The stairs in the condo are steep and concrete, so if you have trouble ascending, this may not be for you, since both bedrooms are there.
We spent just 2 nights here, but we fell in love with the property. We kind of wish now that we had stayed here the whole time while vacationing in Mexico - and then took day trips to see points of interests. But, there is always next time. The house is very well decorated and stocked, and very clean. This was a hassle-free place to rent. The house is located in a good neighborhood, and offers the ability to walk and/or take public transportation to restaurants, etc. I highly recommend this property. We hope to stay here again!
The house is wonderfully situated within walking distance to the Cathedral,Zoo (which has more big cats than any zoo I have ever seen) and many little plazas and markets. Except for our road trips to the ruins or coast we didn't need a car at all. The neighbourhood is safe and even the little cantina on the corner welcomed us with questions on whether we felt safe as Meridians pride themselves on the safety of the city. You could spend a month here and not hit all of the restaurants within walking distance.
The house itself is clean and comfortable. There are several areas to relax so guests don't have to spend all of their time together if they don't wish. We didn't turn the televison on for the week so I can't speak to the quality of that. The only thing missing were speakers for our tablet as the bose system in the house is an older one with ipod docking only but we found a set of speakers on Paseo Montejo (at the walmart believe it or not) for $10 so we went without music for one day only.
We do hope to return to Merida again and hopefully for longer.
