We want to ensure that this property is the right fit for you! This is our vacation home that we are sharing – we are not a resort with a maintenance, concierge, and cleaning staff – and our prices reflect that limitation. That said we have put together as many resources as possible to help you plan your trip and enjoy your stay as if it were your own vacation home. We also have tried to stock the house so that you would not want for much upon your arrival.
If you are looking for a remote mountain getaway and are willing to roll with what comes from a country vacation, you will be hard pressed to find a more beautiful spot! Here are some things you should know...
In winter months, be prepared for snowy and/or icy road conditions by driving a 4WD or suitable vehicle. Note that we are now requiring 4WD for winter rental. Having chains for your car in the trunk is another good option. It's advisable whenever driving in wintry conditions in the mountains of WV as the roads are often hazardous. At times the snow can be deep and it takes 24-48 hours before it is plowed, therefore you should be prepared to be flexible about travel.
The cabin is remote, so even in clear weather its narrow mountain gravel road can be concerning to those not experienced. Depending on whether the road crew has done repairs recently there may be potholes. In most cases you can drive around them, but there may be a few on the way that you’ll just need to slowly drive through. There are also no guardrails on the road, but it has several turnouts to allow cars to pass. The gravel is not suitable for street motorcycles.
Because the house is surrounded by forests and the river there is plenty of nature to enjoy, but also to endure. Mice will occasionally come inside, and although we set out-of-sight humane traps to keep them from settling in, there is a possibility that you will see them during your stay depending on whether they've found a food source recently (it could be from a prior guest -- not your own doing.) We do, however, check to make sure that the kitchen implements are sanitary at the beginning of your stay.
The bug situation is that we are at a high enough elevation to not have a mosquito problem, but there will be gnats in the field, and moths at night wanting to get into the house. There will also be plenty of dead bugs that wedge themselves between the screens and the windows, and cobwebs sprouting up here and there.
If these aspects of nature are acceptable to you, then you will find a beautiful place of nature in which to relax and enjoy your vacation!

Carl and Larisa got married and moved to Elkins, WV in 2000. Larisa moved from DC, and Carl moved from VA. Each had prior roots in WV and longed to return. They now live in Elkins just 20 minutes from the 'All Get Out' riverside vacation rental.
The location is ideal -- just far enough out to be immersed in the natural surroundings, but only 25 minutes from a full-service grocery store, movie theater, Davis and Elkins College, Randolph County Community Arts Center, antique shopping, and a YMCA. It is an hour from highly-rated golf or skiing. Spring and summer bring wonderful fishing, swimming, floating, and boating in the river; winter is great for cross-country skiing on the property or nearby, and alpine skiing is less than an hour's drive. Fall's foliage is not to be missed as the house is engulfed in trees and adjacent to the 1 million acre Monogahela National Forest, wonderful for hiking right out your door. Don't miss nearby Elkins to dine at a variety of restaurants, enjoy free exhibits at the Community Arts Center, and ride the scenic trains on the Durbin and Greenbrier Railroad. Davis and Elkins College is just 20 minutes away where you can enjoy live music and Appalachian arts at the internationally renowned 5-week long Augusta Festival. The Forest Festival every fall is a big draw, with carnival rides and almost two weeks of activities.
The property that this house sits on has been in Larisa's family since 1967. In 1995 Larisa decided to start construction on the property. She designed the house from the ground up and expressed her love of wood, light, warmth, and airiness into the architecture. The windows, decks, sunroom, and porch are situated for maximum enjoyment of the surrounding views of mountains, river, woods, and fields. The ventable skylights in the living room and loft provide sunlight and the lovely sound of rainfall. You can hear the river flow many nights when the windows are open.
We had a great time - it is so peaceful there and your house is beautiful. I don't know what I would have done on Thanksgiving without your fabulous kitchen.
This house was absolutely amazing! Larisa was very quick to respond and even accommodated a last minute family addition. Everything was provided for and there was nothing more we could have needed. We had 5 adults, 3 children (ages 6 and 3) and two good size dogs at this place. There was plenty of space for all and we did not feel crowded. It was very clean, well kept, enough entertainment for all ages and lots of great outdoor space away from everyone. The kitchen was huge and with tons of counter and preparation space. The kids loved the bunk beds, toys, games, Rock Band and everything else provided. The hot tub was amazing, especially since it had snowed. Having plenty of linens, towels and a washing machine and dryer provided made packing so much easier. There is no cable TV, but there was a wide variety of DVDs for movie time. However, there were enough activities to do here, that spending time in front of the television was minimal. We came here from the bustle of D.C. to experience the Polar Express. Having the opportunity to rent this remarkable place actually ended up being the highlight of the entire trip. We cannot wait to come back. It was an adventure to find the house initially, but well worth it. We were very fortunate to come across this mountain retreat and will recommend it to any others that are looking for a place to stay in Elkins.
This was the best house we have rented. It had everything we needed and more even robes which came in so handy for the hot tub. We cooked every meal and had every pan, pot, utensil we needed. The beds were comfy and the kids loved the basement Kid's room with the bunk beds, toys and wonderful assortment of books. It is a private area right on the river but far enough that I didn't have to worry about the kids getting too close. There is a walking trail right down the road. We had a wonderful time and hope to return this summer! Thank you!
Very nice & secluded. Enjoyed our weeken "unplugged". House is well stocked with cooking utensils, books, & movies. House was very clean & owner responsive. It is a long drive down a narrow gravel road so it beautiful in the fall.
The cabin was worth every penny. Everybody felt at home immediately and able to relax even my four legged baby who couldn't get enough of the river. The cabin was immaculate, organized, and had everything needed for a family retreat. We are planning our next visit!!!!!
Our family of four had a wonderful week at Larisa's House. The property is just as described on the listing. It was a quiet setting where we enjoyed daily family devotions. The gas grill and rice steamer were used daily in our meal preparations. Every meal was enjoyed on the screened porch. Shaver's Fork was flowing crystal clear behind the house. Despite our efforts, no fish were caught. We explored a lot of the Monogahela National Forest. At Seneca Rocks we hiked to the observation platform 900' above the parking lot. The same day we drove to Spruce Knob and enjoyed the trails at the top of WV's highest mountain. We floated on inner tubes at the nearby Stuart Recreation Area which allowed for an easy pickup to return about 1 mile upstream within the park. We hiked several trails at Blackwater Falls SP enjoying the falls and canyon. The long, winding drive up to Bickle Knob Tower (also close to the house) was well worth the 360 degree view. We spent a day exploring Gaudineer Knob which was beautiful despite the fog blocking the view at the overlook. We also hiked in the nearby Otter Creek Wilderness Area on the Shavers Mountain trail. Wild blueberries were abundant on the Seneca Rocks trail and near the lake at Blackwater Falls SP. On the drive home on Saturday morning we enjoyed shopping at the Elkins Farmers' Market at the train depot. Larisa was readily available before and during our stay. We had a small plumbing problem which Larisa corrected quickly. She went ABOVE and BEYOND to make it right. We HIGHLY recommend this property.
We loved our stay at this riverfront cabin in the woods. The cabin is spacious, well appointed with a very nice hot tub. The kitchen is lovely. We especially enjoyed the screened in porch where we were able to watch a pair of cardinals raise their young ones in a tree right outside the porch. We swam in the river and enjoyed the peace and quiet. Although we missed not having cable for television, there were a wide variety of videos. There were neighbors close by so we didn't feel too isolated, and yet very private at the cabin. We hope to return in the Fall so our son-in-law and daughter can fish, photograph and gather information about the Shavers Fork and Tygart Rivers for an article they are writing in Eastern Fly Fishing Magazine. Larissa, the owner was wonderful to work with and very accommodating. Thank you, Larissa for sharing your home with us. We look forward to returning in October!
