We want to ensure that this property is the right fit for you! This is our vacation home that we are sharing – we are not a resort with a maintenance, concierge, and cleaning staff – and our prices reflect that limitation. That said we have put together as many resources as possible to help you plan your trip and enjoy your stay as if it were your own vacation home. We also have tried to stock the house so that you would not want for much upon your arrival.

If you are looking for a remote mountain getaway and are willing to roll with what comes from a country vacation, you will be hard pressed to find a more beautiful spot! Here are some things you should know...

In winter months, be prepared for snowy and/or icy road conditions by driving a 4WD or suitable vehicle. Note that we are now requiring 4WD for winter rental. Having chains for your car in the trunk is another good option. It's advisable whenever driving in wintry conditions in the mountains of WV as the roads are often hazardous. At times the snow can be deep and it takes 24-48 hours before it is plowed, therefore you should be prepared to be flexible about travel.

The cabin is remote, so even in clear weather its narrow mountain gravel road can be concerning to those not experienced. Depending on whether the road crew has done repairs recently there may be potholes. In most cases you can drive around them, but there may be a few on the way that you’ll just need to slowly drive through. There are also no guardrails on the road, but it has several turnouts to allow cars to pass. The gravel is not suitable for street motorcycles.

Because the house is surrounded by forests and the river there is plenty of nature to enjoy, but also to endure. Mice will occasionally come inside, and although we set out-of-sight humane traps to keep them from settling in, there is a possibility that you will see them during your stay depending on whether they've found a food source recently (it could be from a prior guest -- not your own doing.) We do, however, check to make sure that the kitchen implements are sanitary at the beginning of your stay.

The bug situation is that we are at a high enough elevation to not have a mosquito problem, but there will be gnats in the field, and moths at night wanting to get into the house. There will also be plenty of dead bugs that wedge themselves between the screens and the windows, and cobwebs sprouting up here and there.

If these aspects of nature are acceptable to you, then you will find a beautiful place of nature in which to relax and enjoy your vacation!

About Larisa

Carl and Larisa got married and moved to Elkins, WV in 2000. Larisa moved from DC, and Carl moved from VA. Each had prior roots in WV and longed to return. They now live in Elkins just 20 minutes from the 'All Get Out' riverside vacation rental.

Why Larisa chose Elkins

The location is ideal -- just far enough out to be immersed in the natural surroundings, but only 25 minutes from a full-service grocery store, movie theater, Davis and Elkins College, Randolph County Community Arts Center, antique shopping, and a YMCA. It is an hour from highly-rated golf or skiing. Spring and summer bring wonderful fishing, swimming, floating, and boating in the river; winter is great for cross-country skiing on the property or nearby, and alpine skiing is less than an hour's drive. Fall's foliage is not to be missed as the house is engulfed in trees and adjacent to the 1 million acre Monogahela National Forest, wonderful for hiking right out your door. Don't miss nearby Elkins to dine at a variety of restaurants, enjoy free exhibits at the Community Arts Center, and ride the scenic trains on the Durbin and Greenbrier Railroad. Davis and Elkins College is just 20 minutes away where you can enjoy live music and Appalachian arts at the internationally renowned 5-week long Augusta Festival. The Forest Festival every fall is a big draw, with carnival rides and almost two weeks of activities.

What makes this house unique

The property that this house sits on has been in Larisa's family since 1967. In 1995 Larisa decided to start construction on the property. She designed the house from the ground up and expressed her love of wood, light, warmth, and airiness into the architecture. The windows, decks, sunroom, and porch are situated for maximum enjoyment of the surrounding views of mountains, river, woods, and fields. The ventable skylights in the living room and loft provide sunlight and the lovely sound of rainfall. You can hear the river flow many nights when the windows are open.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a great time - it is so peaceful there and your house is beautiful. I don't know what I would have done on Thanksgiving without your fabulous kitchen.

Gorgeous Place

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from an awesome long weekend to Elkins. The house was so beautiful, exactly as portrayed on the website. The kitchen had everything and more than was needed. What a gorgeous home and vista! Loved the short walk to the river, we saw deer and bear skat! Great hot tub. The owners really thought of everything. Loved being unplugged and NO television. We watched DVD's and just enjoyed the nature.

We had a tiny issue with the sheets for the queen beds which were taken care of by management very quickly! (thank you)

The house is very remote, but the directions are excellent. We decided ahead of time that dinners would be at the house so we wouldn't have to navigate the road in the dark.

We took the Tygart Flyer on Friday and reserved a parlor car. SO worth the extra money folks! Saturday we milled around Elkins and then decided to drive up to see Buckhannon. It was just beautiful.

Thank you so much Larissa for sharing your home with us. We enjoyed it so very much and couldn't recommend it more! You will NOT be disappointed with your decision to rent here!

Relaxing time with family

  • 5 of 5

This cabin in the woods is a great place to take your loved ones. We had wonderful weather so the children were able to go outside and run down to the river. We played games that we hadn't played in along time, watched movies and laughed a lot. You cannot get cell phone service and there is limited internet which was wonderful for our family member to decompress and just enjoy each other. The house is spacious and Larisa has provided for all our needs.

We took 2 of our granddaughters on the Polar Express and also enjoyed the activities they offered during the day. Because the weather was so wonderful, the whole family played at City Park. It brought back wonderful memories for me as I grew up in Elkins but haven't been back in over 30 years.

The cabin/house is 4 miles on a gravel road so it does take a little time to travel in to town. Make sure you bring your food that you will need. You just can't run to the store! ;) Larisa has provided all cooking equipment. She also has provided linens so you really just need to bring your food!

Come prepared to relax and live in a different world.

The only items I would recommended that need to be in the house is a vacuum cleaner and mop. I like to clean up messes when they happen! :) Other than that, Larisa has thought of everything.

Met and Exceeded All Of My Expectations!

  • 5 of 5

"Cabin is a wonderful place to hold a girl's getaway. Didn't have to worry about bringing paper goods, towels, linens, cleaning supplies or firewood. I opted out of bringing my two dogs, but the large fenced in front yard would have provided a safe place to let them run. Larisa's directions to the cabin were spot on. Looking forward to a return trip."

enjoyable but needed so connection to the outside like tv,

  • 3 of 5

we live on a farm in the country so our grandsons see a dish they know about tv and kids shows. also there is a a/c at the end of the house but you are told to use the whole house fan which we understand as we have one, but we also have medical problems with pollen and an a/c would have been better for us. glad we took our shots and pills before we came. there are a lot of rules so please read before you book. the main thing is mice. I grew up on a farm and we always had mice problems, but if the owners used tom cat, deacon, mice be gone under the house they should not have a problem. we put it around our barns, in our tractors, garage, house, trailers, etc and it works for us. rural king, tsc, Lowes, etc carries the brands. who ever installed the granite in the kitchen did not know what they were doing and the top needs to be pulled and reinstalled. also there are the first 3 floor tile from the hallway to the kitchen that needs to be glued or stapled. I could go on but that will cover it this time.

if you book enjoy the house, river, hot tub and fire pit. it is all fun. use the up stairs bathrooms.

Owner's Response: I’m sorry that Frank had some disappointments in his stay, but I’d like to clear up a few things for future guests. 1) The listing clearly states that we do not have satellite TV. Many families want to unplug and actually seek out this feature. We offer one cabin with TV and one without so we can accommodate all needs. We have satellite internet, thus the dish in the yard. We encourage all prospective guests to read the listing. 2) I don't know where Frank got the impression that guests are not to use the A/C. We spent quite a bit of money to have it installed this summer because we listened to guest feedback in requesting it. We do provide helpful information as to how to operate the whole house fan for those who do not enjoy A/C, preferring instead of have windows open and allow the fresh mountain air in, so maybe that's the source of misunderstanding. 3) I followed up with Frank, and he would not state that he actually saw any evidence of mice. Perhaps he came across the mousetraps that we hide, or maybe he is criticizing the fact that we do not use poison as stated in the house manual. Regardless, we are completely upfront in our listing that you may see a mouse especially as they attempt to move in for the winter. We keep on top of it between guest stays so they don’t set up a home inside. 4) I went over each piece of slate tile where Frank says they are loose and did not find a single one that would budge. The grout between the tiles also has complete integrity. 5) Frank also implied not to use the downstairs bathroom, which is actually the most modern one with a Jacuzzi tub and gorgeous marble and granite. I don’t know what issue he had with it. 6) As for the flaw in the granite, it does not pose any health or safety risk. To fix it would require replacement of the countertop, but we assume that guests would rather have A/C, a hot tub, indoor Jacuzzi, three bathrooms, huge wrap around deck, etc. etc. rather than to avoid looking at a few inches of imperfect granite. We absolutely welcome feedback, but something seems to have gotten under Frank’s skin based on the inaccuracies in this list and the fact that he left one of our toilets (ironically not the downstairs one) vandalized with the flusher handle snapped in half and jammed down the flapper cavity which left the water running continuously. I hope you will consider not just this review, but that we have 50 five star reviews from guests who thoroughly enjoyed their stays.

Great cabin in the mountains

My family and I loved this cabin. We enjoyed 8 wonderful nights here. Larisa was quick to respond to our questions and added an extra night at the last minute for us. We would definitely stay here again.
