Ninety miles from the George Washington Bridge and NYC, and on a hill above the Rondout Creek in High Falls, is a one bedroom, 850 square foot apartment complete except for a kitchen, that overlooks the Mohonk Preserve and Mountain House on the Shawangunk Ridge. Although attached by a 20 foot hallway to the main house which is the owner's residence, this rental is otherwise completely private, with two entrances. There is no kitchen, but an an under-the-counter refrigerator and microwave are available for guests and the cupboard is simply stocked with a few utensils, and there is an electric coffee pot and tea kettle. Although the owners live on site, this rental space is totally reserved for guests of the West Wing only. The outdoor areas have beautiful views of the ridge, a walking path to a secluded spot on the creek, and 3 acres under cultivation for flowers, fruits, berries, vegetables and medicinal and culinary herbs. The property is located just a couple of miles from several trailheads into the Mohonk Preserve and is close to the famous Trapps rock climbing area and Minnewaska State Park. I am a painter and my husband is a writer and runs a graduate program in NYC. We needed space to work and found this beautiful hilltop with creek access. We put up 2 barns from the early 1800s and started establishing gardens and an edible landscape. I also have two rentals just across the creek, VRBO #379093 and #381193. I love to build, save old structures and keep my hands dirty and busy when not in the studio. High Falls is a great location for an easy commute into the metropolitan area while being worlds away in a true Hudson Valley paradise.
Sterrett Smith purchased this cottage in 2002
This property is located in a geologically unique area adjacent to 25,000 acres of protected land that is home to the Mohonk Preserve, Mohonk Mountain House, Minnewaska State Park and many reservoirs within the watershed of NYC. The villages are historic, the food is fresh, and the countryside infectious. And it's an easy drive to so many great locations along the Hudson River, not to mention into NYC.
Our stay was very very nice. We are always comfortable at Sterett's . Bed was comfy, location pretty, all the comforts of home. And her decor is splendid. We look forward to our next stay. Beth
A beautiful and tranquil setting, an elegant yet truly comfortable apartment, a welcoming and accommodating host who thinks of everything to make your stay special - my husband and I (and our dog) could not have asked for anything better for our long weekend. The photos only begin to give the impression of this home - immaculate, artistic, well-appointed in every detail, from the cozy bedding and plush towels to the thoughtful flashlight included on the key chain. Sunrise on the patio, sunset on the opposite porch - we miss it already!
Was our second tike staying there and was perfect every time. Super cozy very accommodating and the style and energy speaks to me every time! Always my first choice for an escape from the city.
This home is impeccably decorated, warm, cozy and extremely clean. There are such wonderful surprises here like the huge cactus and plant in the living room. Also, the moroccan hanging lantern which beautifully lit up the ceiling with color, if on by itself. I enjoyed a few naps in the loft window "seat", and the mattress was luxurious! Being here was pure serenity. Sterrett was lovely and a pleasure to correspond with right from the beginning to a personal farewell! I will be back....
We were overwhelmed by the style and beauty of this rental, and even more so by the splendour of the setting, but not so much by the quality of the mattress we were sleeping on. I realize that's a very subjective aspect of the quality of one's stay but, there you have it.
Otherwise Sterrett is a very attentive host and you will not want for anything in terms of courtesy and thoughtfulness throughout your experience with her.
Our 3-generation family group found the West Wing perfect; our young teens loved being in the romantic loft and grandma adored her beautiful bedroom and comfortable bed. We also loved the views of the garden and the beautiful grounds. We would gladly stay here again.
