This is a beautiful property, up on a hill, with a stunning sunset view of the Luis Peña Cay. The photos don't do it justice. It's clean, modern and has some super comfortable "Better than down" pillows from Brookstone.
Please note the following tips:
1. Culebra, due to its tropical weather, will welcome you with mosquitoes all over the island. Do yourself a favor and buy a couple of 3 oz bottles of Off! plant-based repellent from their Botanicals line. It's not greasy, it doesn't stink, it will keep the mosquitoes away, and you can conveniently pack it in your carry-on bag.
2. Snorkeling is a true beauty in Culebra. Do it every day. If you plan to do it more than once, buy your own set for $25 on Amazon and put it in your carry-on bag. It will be cheaper in the long run and you can use it as many times as you want, unlike a rental snorkel set. We used ours countless times and saw innumerable fish and turtles.
3. Rent a jeep. The property is up a steep, steep hill. A golf cart would do--we saw one on the property--, but you don't really want to be tying up chairs and towels while you're on vacation. You also get a discount from Carlos Jeeps if you tell them you're renting this property.
4. The property comes with beach chairs, towels and a cooler, three super important items that you'll use daily. There's a grocery store nearby--they take cards of course and have an ATM--. Take the cooler, buy some ice at this grocery store and pack your lunch, drink and snacks. That way, you don't have to leave the beach at all.
5. Star gazing is pretty amazing (ha) at night on the property since it's high up and quite dark. Wear your repellent!
6. Visit the Krusty Krab. It's super rustic, but it's the best food we had the entire week we were there.
The manager responds very quickly and answered all our questions immediately.
For sure, we're returning in 2016!
We absolutely loved everything about this place! Carlos is a wonderful host and was there for us every time we had a question about the house or the area.
The kitchen was well equipped, which was nice as we ate a lot of meals on the patio watching the sunset nearly every night for the week we were there! The cool breezes that come off the water in the evening were delightful!
The house is basically new and there were no problems with it at all. Comfortable bed, soft sheets and towels, additional beach towels. There were a couple of small things we asked for and someone was there in no time at all with what we needed.
Half of the experience here was the wonderful customer from Carlos and his staff. Everyone was friendly and professional (the type of customer service you'd expect from a high end hotel!) and always helpful. It was a pleasure being a guest here.
We tried to go back the next two years, but it was already booked! We were very disappointed, but I'm not really surprised!
NOTE: Carlos is always making improvements to the area and sometimes there is some construction going on. We were NEVER bothered by it. Ask about the work schedule and schedule your vacation around it. It is SO worth it to stay here.
Carlos also runs the Jeep rental place near the airport. Last time we were there he was offering 10% off a car rental if you stayed at his place. Do NOT rent a golf cart. they are great for bopping around town but you're sure to lose your luggage going up the hill to the house (and perhaps your lunch on the way down) :-) Rent a Jeep, it's worth it!
Breathtaking views, the property is beautiful and well kept. While visiting the main Island, my friend and I booked two days at this villa and wished we had more time to spend here. This location from what I understand is still underdevelopment with possibly eateries and other amenities to come. In the mean time, this hill top property in Culebra, that offers breathtaking sunrises and sunset on a very spacious balcony w a huge hammock, is the perfect location for rest and relaxation. Let me disclose that while we were very happy w the the villa's location, room amenities, and the lack of a television that allowed us to talk ;) till our hearts content, we had to generously and continuously apply mosquito repellent. I think the problem comes from a pool of water that settles below the balcony making it intolerable at times. The door to the apt must be kept closed so that the room doesn't become infested and your night sleep is not disturbed.
I suggest that the property owner remedies the pooling of the water and fumigates the property area on a regular basis. But until the situation is under control of its mosquito problem, a mosquito net over the bed would be very much appreciated. Even though the
cool room from running the air conditioner helps keep the mosquito away, it not enough when they have made there way into the room looking for food and warmth. :(
I truly hope to come back in the near future and that my suggestion were not only taken into consideration, but at least some executed.
We couldn't have picked a more beautiful and peaceful place to enjoy our 40th anniversary. Upon arrival we noticed no pot in the coffee maker but with a phone call one was delivered within 5 minutes.! Everything is brand new, and has everything you need. We enjoyed Zaco Tacos and the Dingy Dock to eat. We will go back for our 45th and hope the VISION continues!
This was the best vacation we've ever had. The villa was great and relaxing, the balcony view of the Luis Pena island and canal is breathtaking (especially at sunset) and the stone, tile and glass work is fantastic. The very private balcony is big enough to comfortably accomodate 8 people and is very private - you cannot see any roads, cars, people .... The kitchen windows open to the balcony and make serving easy and efficient. The villa is very big and has a lot of ammenities that are not usually a part of a rental unit (lots of closet/drawers, lots of floor space, a big bathroom with a huge shower - with all the hot water you can use, many big windows and lots of light, beach chairs/towels/cooler, fridge, electric retractable canopy for the balcony, clean and comfortable furniture, etc... The artwork in the villa is unique and was made by local people including Carlos' mother who made all the paintings. Carlos and his wife catered to our every need and went out of their way to ensure we had a great vacation. They helped coordinate vehicle rental, deep sea fishing, and steered us towards every thing we needed, including great restaurants. The pictures on the web site are real but do not convey the overwhelming impression we had when we walked into the villa. Peace and quiet, with the great views and lots of beaches, snorkelling nearbymake for a great get-away. We've rarely been on a vacation where we got more than advertised. Carlos knows what people want and need and he's paid a lot of attention to detail. We're already planning our next stay for next winter because we're sure the villa will rent easily and there will be many returning customers. Thanks Carlos!
Culebra has spectacular snorkeling , keys which you can visit on water taxis, and freindly people
