The owners, Kim and Wayne, moved to Albuquerque for graduate school and fell in love with the southwest. After spending three years living in Oaxaca, Mexico, the couple decided to build their first home to raise their two boys. You'll see custom features heavily influenced by their time in Mexico throughout the home.
Their oldest son is studying at UNM.
Wayne and Kim completed their doctoral degrees at UNM and their first professional jobs required them to leave the state. Currently, Wayne resides in Research Triangle Park near Raleigh, NC and Kim is a university professor in Kentucky.
Wayne & Kimberly Pitts purchased this house in 2000
This house is perfectly situated with easy access to I-40. The owners invested in this part of town because they enjoyed the appeal of living in the southwestern quadrant of Albuquerque. It's close to Old Town and there were a lot of nearby attractions for children including the world-class zoo, the aquarium and biopark, the Children's Museum, and the Museum of Natural History. There are also some fantastic New Mexican restaurants nearby.
Because we built the home using a custom builder, we were able to add some special features. From the moment you enter the hand-carved front gate in the courtyard to the carved posts on the pergola on the back patio, you will notice the special details of this house. All of the furnishings have a unique history and many were made by Mexican artisans.
In the fall, the smell of roasted green chile fills the air and the home is perfectly situated to enjoy the sights of the Sandia Mountains. Don't be surpised to see a hot air balloon fly directly over the house.
Thanks so much for the travel tips--those were very helpful!! I really hope a get a chance to sit down with some of the books that you mentioned. We loved staying at your house--it was absolutely perfect for us.
We spent a week at Wayne & Kim's very nice home. It is very comfortable with a great backyard. Being able to park in a garage was great. The house is close to the freeway. We enjoyed being able to come home and relax after a day in Albuquerque or Santa Fe. Wayne called after our arrival to make sure we were settled in and to answer any questions. Both Wayne and Kim were very easy to work with. They also left a detailed guide to restaurants and other Albuquerque sights that was very helpful. We ate a lot of great food based on their recommendations. We really enjoyed El Pinto. I would recommend staying in their home. I will stay here again when I return to Albuquerque.
This was the first time I stayed at a home while on holiday. Wayne's home was absolutely comfortable, cozy, and clean. Everything went like clockwork and he was available every time I contacted him. The home is in a gated community and felt secure the entire time we were there.
I would absolutely recommend this home to anyone who was looking to stay the weekend in Albuquerque. Thank you so much Wayne... you and your wife for allowing us the opportunity to enjoy our family time in your home. It sure did beat the cramped feeling of a hotel room... most definitely.
We were extremely pleased with our stay !
It is a very beautiful and authentic house.
We found the house very clean, well maintained and had everything a family might need for their stay. The owners were kind and made sure we had all the information we need. They were quick to answer all of our questions and to accommodate us in the best way possible.
Overall we enjoyed our stay and we are very grateful for the owners' kindness and understanding.
We came to Albuquerque to visit family for Thanksgiving. We cooked a great meal in the well stocked kitchen. We absolutely loved the house!
We really love the home and yard. The only thing I would say since I am asked is that the lighting was not very conducive for reading especially in the living room. Also the dining area overhead light was not that bright. I would love to see more lamps in the entire house. Except for that, the four of us who stayed at the house really loved it and would rent it again.
Wonderful!!! Lovely home, very comfortable. We stayed three nights during the balloon fiesta, and loved it! Easy to get around town, and can't wait to go back!
The house is conveniently located near Interstate 40 making accessing anywhere in Albuquerque convenient. A Balloon Fiesta shuttle stop is within walking distance-two blocks from the house. Volcanoes and Old Town are less than five miles. Santa Fe is less than an hour away by car or take the Railrunner train and see the beautiful scenery.
