Casa Caribaea is nestled five minutes from central Uvita up a quiet paved road. Set on 2.5 acres and bordered by hundreds of acres of primary jungle in a verdant garden setting, it comprises only two residences. From the moment you enter the luxuriant garden estate, your holiday is suffused with tropical serenity.
Designed along the lines of a Balinese village in the hills, Casa Caribaea projects a theme of simplistic elegance. The buildings use local stones and hardwoods blending seamlessly into the environment. The gardens are generously given center stage and provide a wonderful contrast against the sweeping ocean views. The informal and accommodating owners live in the Gran Pagoda home and are friendly and full of information. The rental villa is privately situated 40 yards away from the Gran Pagoda House and enjoys sunset ocean views from the Sunset Cocktail Deck.
Rooms are a sensuous combination of luxury and homespun charm. The latter comes in the form of antiques collected by the owners on their travels and the unique furniture created by local and international wood artisans. All bathrooms and kitchens are spacious and lined with white quartz. The radial ceiling beams supporting the cathedral design are made of Nispero, a local hard wood. The hand-crafted wood windows encourage guests to take advantage of the continuous breezes that whip through the property but all rooms also have air conditioning and fans. Flower arrangements are decoratively arranged throughout the living quarters showcasing the prized jewels of the garden.
Tropical abundance as a phrase does not do justice to the profusion and variety of plants here. Heliconias, gingers, bromeliads and palms are constantly attracting birds and butterflies. Many of the species will be unrecognizable to most as the owner has been meticulously collecting rare plants for several years. The garden boasts the largest collection of heliconias within the country at over 110 varieties and counting. There are also over 150 palm varieties on display. Several rare species endemic to Madagascar and New Caledonia are littered throughout the landscape. A series of limestone walkways, wooden bridges, pergolas and streams run through the property. Many of these meander through primary rainforest giving wildlife lovers more opportunities to gaze at toucans and howler monkeys.
The staff prides itself on local knowledge and tailor-made excursions are created to help guests appreciate Southern Costa Rica. Cultural tours include visits to a small artisan vanilla farm, rainforest canopy zip-lines and excursions to Boruca, an indigenous village with celebrated craftspeople. Courses on a range of activities, including basket weaving with local materials, Spanish language classes, and Reiki energy workshops, can be organized. There are a range of more activity-oriented excursions: guided walks, waterfall canyon rappelling, ATV trail riding, sport fishing and mountain biking (with a wide tire option for beach rides). Private yoga and surf lessons can also be coordinated. The owner is an avid surfer and can suggest the best places to surf for a given experience level. A unique botanic tour, which visits some of the most spectacular private tropical gardens in the area, is a must for plant enthusiasts. Spa services are also available upon request.

About Jason and Victoria Hughes
Jason and Victoria met in the Bay Area of California and were married in 2005. Shortly after, they moved to Costa Rica in order to be closer to Victoria's mother, who had recently moved to Uvita for retirement. Shortly after, Jason and Victoria built their custom dream house where they live with their two kids, Oliver and Ozzie. Jason worked in the financial services industry for eight years. Victoria is a registered nurse with over ten years of experience in the ICU.
Jason and Victoria Hughes purchased this Villa in 2006
Why Jason and Victoria Hughes chose Bahía Ballena
We were some of the first buyers within the Jardines del Morete development. We fell in love with the lot immediately as the building site had sweeping ocean views but was also located next to primary rainforest. The property was also closer to central Uvita than other ocean view lots we saw.
What makes this Villa unique
The property is less than three minutes from central Uvita (one mile) and is on a road that was recently paved by the property owners in the development. Most of the ocean view homes in Uvita are located up steep, long and unpaved roads that require a four wheel drive. It is very rare to have a paved road here and thus a four wheel drive is not required (although we do recommend a four wheel drive for other activities in the area). There is also a constant wind that passes through our valley. Not only does this unique wind ward off the insects but it also influences temperatures here as we are on average five degrees F cooler than average Uvita temperatures. The property has primary forest that is teeming with wildlife and in order to maximize the chance of seeing everything we have built extensive non-slip limestone pathways throughout the primary rainforest on our property. The network of trails, while affording amazing photography opportunities, is also flanked by rare plants that you simply don't see at other homes in the area. All the palm species (most imported from seed) are grouped together within their respective genuses and labeled for those with a botanic penchant. Bromeliads, gingers and heliconias are also festooned along the trails giving guests a spectacular display of rare and colorful flowers amongst the backdrop of tropical fecundity. The property always has somebody on guard 24 hours. Although we located in an area with little traffic, we consider security a top priority and have taken several steps to ensure that you and your belongings are safe and secure.

Awesome Stay at Casa Caribaea!
We loved staying at Casa Caribaea! The property was absolutely stunning, photos don’t do it justice. Jason and Victoria were the friendliest and kindest owners. They helped us organize an amazing tour through the mangroves. We had the jungle as our backyard, but were about 10 minutes from Dominical. It was the best of both worlds and we can’t wait to go back!!!!
Great for family
We visited Costa Rica during spring break and out stay at the Casa Caribaea was everything we had hoped for and more! The owners Jason and Victoria are fantastic!! They were very helpful with their knowledge of Costa Rica and it was a pleasure meeting them and their children.
About the Villa. The property is cozy, lovely and well-equipped. Plenty of room for 4 with all the comforts of home - two bedrooms, and ample living room, tv, cable, Wi-Fi. The small private pool was really enjoyable and had the perfect temperature. The grounds are absolutely beautiful!! There is a small hotel a short walk from the Villa which was convenient for evening cocktails or grab a meal.
Highly recommend the Casa Caibaea!!!
Perfect Welcome to Costa Rica
We drove to This place after arriving in San Jose. It was so comfortable and welcoming after 24 hours of travel. It's a beautiful property with an amazing view. The pool is under the main house, which we did not use much. But it is gorgeous. The house is above their garage, across and big drive way from the main house. So it is pretty private. The house was stocked with necessities which was SO helpful! Coffee from the local shop (Sibu Cafe which is great), eggs, oil, and a few beers. The beer was crucial after our travel day!
Victoria and Jason were very helpful in recommending where to eat or things to do. They recommended exotica, which was the best food I've had in Costa Rica. When I arrived I mentioned yoga and Victoria invited me to her class the next morning, which was fantastic. We were only there for a short time, we went to Nauyaca waterfall both days, it was a hard hike, but worth it.
Thanks for the stay
A great New Year's stay in Uvita!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Casa Carabaea in Uvita! The property exceeded our expectations; was well furnished, in a quiet off the beaten track location and the hosts were extremely friendly, helpful and went out of their way to make our stay memorable -- thank you!
A couple of portable beach chairs to keep in the car during a stay and maybe a boogie board for the kids to borrow would have been great, as none of the beaches have chairs/sunbeds to rent.
A thoroughly enjoyable stay and would thoroughly recommend to others.
This place is beautiful. First visit to CR. It was a struggle for us to get here from San Jose ~ the driving is SO different from the US. No addresses? No street signs? Great place for our 1st few nights. Any issues were quickly handled. The infinity pool is spectacular! You do share with the owners, and other guests. We walked the trail on the property and it was awesome. We did the ATV ~ lots of fun! Ladies, wear a sports bra :) Also, walking the Whales Tail at low tide was a highlight of our trip
Welcome to Paradise !!
What a wonderful vacation we had at the Garden villa ! The villa is situated in a very accessible hill with incredible view of the pacific ocean ! Jason and Victoria were very welcoming and helped us on every step of our family trip . Our kids ( 11 and 7 ) enjoyed a lot the pool, the view and the Howler monkeys living in the trees near the pool ! The villa is very cozy, you would have everything that you need and we love to have fruits at our arrival ! We visited several national park around the area but the wildlife is right there on the natural trail at the villa and we enjoyed to explore and observe their habitat. The beautiful Uvita beach is at 5 min from the house with lifeguard on duty and very warm water, we love it ! Uvita is a wonderful, natural safe town for everyone and very well located to visit Dominical, Manuel Antonio, even the south part of Costa Rica.
Many thanks Victoria and Jason for sharing a piece of your paradise with us , we won't forget it , it was such an amazing experience for all of us. We hope to come back to enjoy it again !

Uvita is in the heart of Costa Rica's Southern zone. It is the gateway to Ballena National Park. The Jardines del Morete development is comprised of several private residences and has one of the few paved roads in the area. The local beaches of Chaman and Hermosa are less than five minutes by car. Uvita has several restaurants, two large supermarkets, two banks, an urgent care center with adjacent pharmacy, a gas station and a host of other commercial services.
