Villa, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 3 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

Mermaids Ridge is a large, well apportioned, light and airy villa, ideally located on the exclusive North End of Elbow Cay. The villa's elevated location affords ever changing panoramic 360 degree views of Elbow Cay from the beautiful turquoise Sea of Abaco, sweeping across Man of War Cay to the grandiour of the Atlantic Ocean.

Situated in its own tropical garden on a quiet sandy lane, the only worry you will have is which beach to choose for that early morning dip. The beach on the Abaco Sea is ideally suited for children with its gently sloping icing sugar sands leading into the protected turquoise waters of the Abaco Sea. At night you can gaze up at the spectacular stars.

There is a public dock on the North End for you to moor a boat, local boat hire is available with pick-ups at the North End dock and Golf cart rental is also available. About Howard and Lindy Parkinson

Howard and Lindy Parkinson, we are outgoing and adventurous. Having spent a year sailing down the Caribbean islands we did not find a better place to to be.

Howard and Lindy Parkinson purchased this villa in 2004

Why Howard and Lindy Parkinson chose Bahamas

Having looked for holiday property in France, Spain and Majorca we could not find anything that was just right. We knew after the first 10 minutes in Mermaids ridge that the house was exactly right, we love the island two. Having sailed the Caribbean for a year there was nothing to better Hope Town or Mermaids Ridge.

What makes this villa unique

Peace and tranquility of island living while near the quaint Hopetown which provides restaurants, shopping facilities and more.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We had a fabulous time! Your house is very comfortable and everything was great.

We loved the pool and used it every day. The weather was perfect too!

We liked the layout of the house. I appreciated the wifi because I had to do a little work when I was there. Mostly we avoided technology though!

We enjoyed the north side of the island and liked it best because it is quiet and the plantings and vegetation are so beautiful by all the homes.

Loved that snorkeling was so close and we went to the Abaco Sea beach for seeing starfish and sunsets.

Lovely home, pool a bonus and beautiful landscaping. The caretaker, Sherman went above and beyond to make us comfortable. Homeowners warm and friendly. I would recommend this property without hesitation, you will not be disappointed!

Owner's Response: It was great to meet you both, I always love it when guests love the house as much as we do. Happy travels. I agree the pool is such an asset just jump in and cool off at any time. My favourite thing to do is to float in the pool at night looking up at the stars which are stunning. I hope you return soon.

Quiet retreat in the tree tops

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed out stay at Mermaid's Ridge. The accommodation was spacious and comfortable. We loved relaxing over breakfast on the balcony overlooking the pool, patio and garden listening to the birds.

This quiet retreat near Hope Town in the Abaco's is only a short stroll away from a beautiful beach and the ocean. A world away from the noise and stress of everyday life. A stroll around traffic free Hope Town with its pretty pastel coloured houses and tropical gardens is a delight. Take your camera for lovely views across the Harbour to the historic light house.

We enjoyed our visits to the excellent restaurants in Hope Town, Lovely food and always 'service with a smile'.

It certainly was a holiday to remember.

Idilic, secluded, Bliss perfect for multi generational families.

  • 5 of 5

We are sailors and usually stay on our sail boat in the Abacos but this year our daughter, son in law and grandchildren were going to visit, the thought of 6 people on the sail boat with two children who cannot swim that well made us decide to become land lubbers.

We found Mermaids Ridge and the pool made us to decide to book it. My grandchildren, loved it, just like being in a tree house Nanna they said as the living accommodation is high up and just below the tree line with views right around the North End of Elbow Cay from the Sunrise in the East, to Man of War and past the Sunset in the West around almost to the light house in Town.

The house is large and comfortable and perfect for a multi generational vacation with two living areas and a large deck surrounding the pool. The bedrooms are comfortable and each has a bathroom next to it or en-suite. The upstairs lounge is very large with great views and plenty of seating and space to play board games or just to watch a DVD. There is plenty of outside space and seating for BBQ's and meals outside both upstairs on the house deck and by the pool.

The pool was the main focus of the Holiday, my grandchildren practically lived in it, they are 5 and 8, by the end of the holiday they were like two fish, swimming, diving and practicing their snorkelling. It allowed for relaxing time by the pool cocktail in hand just watching the play and all of us laying in the pool as darkness fell to watched the stars come out, the stars are great here. The North End beaches were also great, the Abaco side shallow sloping beach for safe swimming, kayaking and practice snorkelling although there is not much to see. The Atlantic side for beach combing and wave jumping, although the beach is quite steep for young ones.

We hired a golf cart and some days a boat, the North End dock near by was great and we visited Tahiti Beach, Abaco Inn and Cracker P's by boat. One day we did hire a golf cart for the South End of the island and went to On Da Beach grill, but really there was not much to see by road and we enjoyed visiting resorts by boat it made more of a day out.In the Evening we visited restaurants in Hope Town and I won $160 playing Bingo at Captain Jacks. One evening we organised dinner at Fire Fly were picked up at the Post Office dock for our dinner reservation, wondering through town early evening and the golf cart ride made for a great evening for the children.

All in all a great place and we will back.

Great girls' week at Mermaid's Ridge

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of four for a week at Mermaid's Ridge. We thoroughly enjoyed our week. The house was perfect for what we needed. We had everything we needed to prepare home-cooked meals almost every night. The location of the house is very peaceful and convenient for visiting both the ocean side and the bay side. Hope Town is probably the most beautiful place I've ever visited and I definitely plan to return. Shopping and dining options within Hope Town village are limited, but you can find what you need if you plan. Captain Jacks is the most accessible site with good drinks and decent food -- the nightly events (bingo, trivia, etc. are big draws so get there early if you want to participate). As you might guess, eating out is fairly expensive on the island since everything has to be brought in, but the two grocery stores can generally provide what you need to eat at home as necessary. If you get in on Saturday night, you won't find anything open and most places will be closed on Sunday. Plan accordingly!!

We had a couple relatively minor complaints/suggestions. First, the house ABSOLUTELY should have beach chairs to take to the beach. While we still enjoyed our beach days using blankets on the sand, having beach chairs would've been much better. We were VERY surprised that a house in an island/beach community provided no chairs to take to the beach. Second, we were a little disappointed to not have the ability to take our golf cart to the south end of the island -- island residents do have permission to drive through town, so there should be a way to extend that permission to renters upon request. Without that ability, we were unable to explore the southern end of the island and therefore we feel like we missed out on some great sight-seeing. We looked into renting a cart for the day, but all carts are generally rented out for the week and none were available. Since there aren't any taxis, your only option is to get a restaurant shuttle, but those shuttles of course only take you back and forth to their restaurant. We did take the shuttle to Firefly, which was very worthwhile. It's a gorgeous resort and the food in the restaurant was delicious. I will second another review about the quality of the pillows -- they were all pretty hard.

Despite the little annoyances, we had a fantastic time. Sherman (the local caretaker) was very friendly and helpful.

Owner's Response: Hi Girls Thank you for Your Review. We will take on board your suggestion of beach chairs. Just wanted to say I am surprised that you were unable to rent a golf cart for a day or two, it is possible to rent a golf cart for a day or two so long as one is available. I would suggest booking in advance. Also bikes are available for hire and those you can take through town, in addition the whole island is accessible by boat which is also fun and a boat gives you access to other nearby islands to also explore so its well worth the effort. Island Marine is one of the boat rentals and they are very good if you are not used to boating they will show you how to get about. I hope you do return to Hope Town sometime soon it really grows on you.

Very nice place

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Mermaid's Ridge.

The house was very clean, there is a caretaker name Sherman who transports you up to the house from the harbor and back down to the harbor with your luggage at the end of your stay. It was a little too cold to use the pool but it is a wonderful property.

I think we would have enjoyed it more if we knew a couple things going into it. First of all, the north and of Elbow Cay is far more remote than the south end. This is because you cannot take a golf cart from the north end through town. Instead, you have to park on the north end of town. This is very inconvenient because the most favored beach on the south end is four or 5 miles away from the town. Also, all of the resorts and several restaurants are several miles south of town. Also, the beach on the ocean side in the north end is a coral beach. Therefore, it's very hard to go swimming in the ocean up at the north end. Instead, you have to go into town. Going into town is only a mile, but it can be a hassle at times.

The best thing about the north and is the beach on the Abaco Sea side. This beach is gorgeous and is the beach that we went to every single day. The Ocean side tends to be far more windy. The Sea beach was never windy at all and was fantastic for finding conch shells and starfish. The kids absolutely loved that beach. It was also very nice to watch the sunset on that side.

The other thing you should know is about grocery shopping. For the first few days, we thought Vernon's was the only grocery shop in town. Vernon's, by the way is extremely small and pricey. Happily, we found the Harbor front supermarket which had a far greater selection. It is still not a large grocery store by any means, but the selection is far better. We had our taxi driver take us to the main grocery store in Marsh Harbour to pick up a lot of things before we took the ferry across. That really helped.

If you are looking to really get away from it all in a place that is extremely well maintained and has beautiful views, then this is your place.

Owner's Response: Chris and family thank you for your review. I am glad you had a good time. I just wanted to respond to a few of your points. Yes general traffic is not permitted in Hope Town itself, which I thinks adds to the charm. It does not matter if you are on the North or South End of the Cay you still have to walk to restaurants in town from either end, Captain Jacks, Munchies, Harbours Edge and Sip Sip. Hope Town Inn and Marina is a short shuttle ride across the harbour so again no difference to being on either end of the island. The other resorts you mention are Abaco Inn, Sea Spray and Firefly all of whom will pick up guests in Hope Town if a reservation is made in advance and then return you after your meal, so although you cannot drive there they are easily accessible. All the resorts on the South End are accessible by boat. I also disagree with you about the most favoured beach, while Tahiti Beach is indeed really lovely it can get very crowded and noisy, I would not choose it over the abaco beach on the North End which is usually very quiet, in part due to the fact the those on the south end cannot drive through town to get to it. In addition there are three small coves on the Atlantic beach side of the North End, while one is quite rocky, the one with the access opposite the North End dock is sandy and good for swimming. I worry that perhaps I did not give you sufficient detail as to what, where and how to get to places and have made a note of your comments so that I am able to provide information for future Guests before they arrive. Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback it is always valuable. Howard and Lindy
