Imagine leaving the hustle and bustle behind as you drive up to this lovely log home nestled in a private wooded setting. You feel the stress just melt away. It is a kind of rustic luxury that only exists in a true mountain retreat.
As you step through the front door you will experience lodge style architecture from the log walls and open living area to the cat walk that joins two loft bedrooms. There are four total bedrooms and three full baths including a large master suite that offers privacy and convenience. Grab a sweater and take your morning coffee out onto the large long front porch. Chances are you'll spot a deer or three and the fresh air will infuse your spirit and get you ready for the day.
While visiting, our guests have to concern themselves with only one thing: how to spend their time…
After much deliberation, we have chosen the name for our cabin… We would like to welcome you to our “Sleeping Bear Lodge.” We have been so inspired by the rich history of the Jim Thorpe region, from the Delaware Indians to the coal mining boom to the tale behind the current name of the town. And there is one story that really stood out for us…
In our quest for area information, we discovered that the town of Jim Thorpe was, until the mid-1950s, known as Mauch Chunk (pronounced “mock” Chunk). The name is derived from “bear mountain” in the language used by the Lenape people and it is in reference to a nearby mountain on the Lehigh River which they believed resembled a sleeping bear. We found out that the mountain itself is in fact called Bear Mountain. We just love the rich Native American history of the area and the romantic origin of Mauch Chunck. So we thought “Sleeping Bear Lodge” a fitting name. We hope that it inspires you to visit and discover more of the area's wonderful history first hand.
After almost a year of working on our cabin, we opened it up to share with other vacationers. And we've received great feedback! With it’s custom details, warm furnishings and loads of character and charm, we have tried to create the perfect vacation atmosphere for our guests to enjoy.
In the Spring and Summer, it’s just a short walk to the pool or to the lake for fishing and swimming, and our area is a perfect spot for riding bicycles. If you would like to enjoy longer hikes and scenic rides along the Lehigh Valley Gorge, head into quaint and historic downtown Jim Thorpe (sometimes called the Switzerland of America and just 10 minutes down the mountain). Here you will find charming boutiques, fabulous eateries, live music at the pubs and so much more. While you’re visiting make plans to take a historic train ride through some of the most beautiful scenery around. In addition to downtown, you will be close to top golfing and rafting destinations as well as music venues, vineyards, horseback riding and the Pocono Raceway.
Of course Winter activities abound in the area and many top skiing destinations are just a short drive from the cabin. Or put on your snowshoes and head out the front door. Whatever your interests, you will be delighted in what the Pocono region offers.
Whenever we tell people we have a vacation home here, their response is always “I just love Jim Thorpe!' We really believe you will too.
Steve & Marg,
We came from Lancaster, PA for a weekend away and really enjoyed the Sleeping Bear. We had a good bit of snow but still made it into town for Winterfest 2014!
Your place is beautiful! We most enjoyed the wood stove, the master bedroom suite, the catwalk and all of the hidden detail in your decorating.
Thank you for welcoming us into your home!
lots of room- beautiful porches- private-good mattresses- clean- all the kitchen gadgets, gas stove top-comfortable-close to a variety of things to do from waterfall walks, rafting, biking, paint ball park, outlet center, caves - I could go on and on!!! Great place- definitely recommend this house!!!!
The cabin was so cozy! We loved every bit of our long weekend with friends! We will definitely be booking again and have already referred friends.
The home is comfortable and well prepared. Nikki is great to deal with and the area is nice. Our only complaint was that the two "lofted bedrooms" are open to the whole house (three walls). Probably good for families but not three or four couples. We felt that this wasn't properly explained.
However, despite this, we had a wonderful weekend and the house is really great.
The cabin is nice and cozy, with a beautiful wood finish. It is well distributed, with the family area right in the middle, so we were all interacting with each other all the time. It accommodated the 8 of us comfortably. It is also conveniently located close to everything. Ski resorts are relatively close by, towns to go grocery shopping are close as well, and there are other attractions and things to do near by.
Renting the property was simple and straight forward. The description on the listing was accurate and the pictures truly give you a great idea of what to expect. We like to explore new places, but this is a place we would love to come back to.
Great cabin, great area, great stay.
The cabin was as advertised and then some and has us thinking about making it a vacation destination for years to come. There was enough room inside and out for our extended family group that we could spread out when needed for some peace and quiet but also gather together at the large table for family meals. We enjoyed use of the local amenities and hit the beach, pool, playground, tennis court, basketball court, playground, and even just jogging on the quiet neighborhood roads. The occasional deer sightings added some excitement to our runs and walks. The location worked out really well for nearby exploration including Pike's Peak, the butterfly sanctuary, and state parks. We were amazed by the boulder field and enjoyed finding waterfalls and learning about rhododendrons. We also were able to do a bit further travel as we did a day trip to Dorney Park. The new interstate exit made north and south travel access really convenient and has us thinking about what else we could do from this launching point. We are looking forward to more exploration in future years when our kids are older and we can learn more about the Jim Thorpe and hit up the mountain biking or the white water rafting type adventures. This cabin allows you to decide between a relaxing summer day in the quaint neighborhood or to dial up the adventure with seemingly limitless, and varied, choices within a short drive.
Our stay did have one small hiccup however - after a couple uses the grill ran out of propane. I contacted the manager and she directed me to a local gas station for a refill and promised to refund me the money spent. (The refund processed as expected at the end of our stay.) We were very impressed with the quick turnaround to solve our "problem" and it showed that management stands behind their property and truly care about their customers
We could not have been more pleased with the accommodations. They were as described and then some. The home was extremely clean, the amenities included everything we needed. We enjoyed the pit fire area as well as the wood burning stove! Both the owner and manager were extremely responsive. The property is close to town, restaurants, and trails (we completed our first piece of the Appalachian Trail, 9.5 miles!). There were 6 of us celebrating a retirement. I would like to return in the future with my family! This property is HIGHLY recommended!!
So close to so many attractions. Just a few of our favorites include: Hickory Run State Park just 15 minutes away and provides wonderful hiking opportunities for all skill levels and is home to Boulder Field - a must see natural landscape of boulders created by glaciers during the Ice Age.
Penn's Peak and The Mauch Chunk Opera House are great venues for art & entertainment. Plan to catch a concert or a show during your trip or head up to Roadies Restaurant & Bar at Penn's Peak for dinner and a drink.
For the golf enthusiast, Jack Frost National Golf Club is just a short drive away and offers over 200 acres of breathtaking views and a course for all skill levels to enjoy.
We are in the Poconos, so of course there are many places the winter sports lover will enjoy. One great location is Big Boulder, part of the Jack Frost Resort area, which offers skiing, snowboarding & snow tubing.
Whitewater rafting as well as paintball fields are minutes away for those who prefer a more extreme style of vacationing. Or if you are looking for a little less excitement on your relaxing getaway, shopping and lunch are a must do in downtown Jim Thorpe!
And there is just so much more...
