About Stephen Girardin

My parents bought this property when i was 4, and all my childhood memories remain in the walls of this house. I used to live in Paris when i grew up, and we would go to this house every single weekend! After studying biology at the Pasteur Institute (Paris) for several years, I moved with my wife and our two kids to Toronto, where i do research at the University of Toronto.

Stephen Girardin purchased this cottage in 1975

Why Stephen Girardin chose Aisne

When we bought this house in 1975, my parents fell in love with the location: so quiet, so secluded, yet so close to Paris (1h drive). The house is surrounded by rolling hills of open farmland, and the only noise you hear is birds singing!

However, when we bought the house, it was in a very rough shape. The roof was leaking and we had to change 500 square meters of roof tiles!! There was no toilet, no bathroom, no heat, and only the kitchen and a bedroom were 'livable'. After nearly 40 years of renovations, we uncovered the original gem, fully renovated 275 square meters of living space, kept the original charm of the old farmhouse, but brought comfort and high-end finish throughout.

Great place in the middle of the countryside!

  • 5 of 5

Really enjoyed our stay here! Stayed for 9 nights and enjoyed the peaceful surroundings in the small town we stayed in! Very cool that the house was built in the 1700s. It was great to get away from the craziness of Paris and be right in the middle between Disneyland Paris and Champagne houses. If you are looking for a spot to take your kids to Disneyland and also have some adult time in the champagne houses, it can't be beat! Also, Stephen is great at giving his tips on restaurants and places to visit in the area. Would definitely do it again!

Fantastic house and surroundings

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful property - large enough for four couples without getting in each others way. The best information pack for a house that we have rented in France - thanks Stephen. Can recommend the restaurant Les Ruines at La Ferte Milon - one of the best meals we have had in France and the welcome from the owner was great. Coming from NZ it was great to find a well stocked kitchen as far as utensils, crockery etc - a really great kitchen for cooking in. We enjoyed our stay - 1 week was too short.

A month of bliss

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our recent 4-week stay (June 2016) at this property. The villa is not only charming (actually even better than the photos!) but also very spacious with everything one could possibly need in a great vacation home. It is well kept and everything is in working order. The surrounding grounds are lovely and peaceful, with separate cozy areas (in and out of the sun) to enjoy meals or to simply relax. Our party of 7 was composed of 4 adults (2 couples), 2 teenagers (in separate rooms) and 1 child (mezzanine bedroom). We found that this three-story house afforded everyone ample privacy, yet the kitchen, dining and living rooms were each large enough to comfortably accommodate all of us at the same time for meals and for evening board/card games. The location makes the house feel sechluded, yet we were within driving distance to Paris and many historic WW1 and WW2 sites such as Compiègne, the Somme, the Chemin des Dames, and Verdun. We also enjoyed outtings in the surrounding Champagne area...We highly recommend this property and hope to be back soon!

WOW! What a truly remarkable vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We rented the Monthiers property for the week after Christmas. We had a remarkable time. First, some practicalities. The owner was responsive and extremely helpful. There is an property manager close by - which is always reassuring to know -- and she had the home is excellent condition. The property is a little challenging to find, so power up the GPS. The price is remarkable for what one gets.

Now, to the home. The location is quaint and beautiful -- rustic and rural, with small villages, towns and citie close by. The house is substantial and solid -- and extremely good for a large group (there were eight of us, in two families). The outside grounds are kept in great shape and provided lots of room for the three kids (3 to 10) to play. The house is well cared for inside and out. Inside the home, everything worked well (if the Internet is not the fastest, remember you are in rural France!). The rooms were large and well-appointed. The furniture is robust -- which is great for a group with several young kids. The floors and walls are extremely sound proof -- the eight of were together for six days without having to listen to each other's noise the whole time. We could not have relaxed more! There is ample dishware and utensils and the kitchen appliances all worked well (with good instructions for the rather unique washer and dryer). The fire place kept the house toasty warm and was the centrepiece of a great gathering place.

The main floor has a large country-style kitchen and a huge living room/dining room area. There were times when all eight of where in this area without getting in each other's way. The second floor has a large Master Bedroom-type room, a shared bathroom and a second bedroom suite/play area that included a television set and video game console and a separate bedroom with a double bed. Upstairs, there was a shared bathroom (also with full facilities) a wonderful large bedroom with a double bed and, in a cute little loft, a child's bed. My granddaughter loved being upstairs in her special hiding place. This double bedroom also had a neat sitting area/tv space, which was a perfect kid's retreat. The second Master bedroom upstairs was enormous, with a lovely large bed, couch, table, etc. It was gorgeous room, separated from the rest of the house, quiet as could be and very cosy.

Great location, superb hosts, quiet, and wonderful. Close to Paris, Disneyland, Riems and much more. We really lucked out!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review, we are delighted that you enjoyed the house! Maybe a note to future guests, the house is actually not in "Monthiers". This is a mistake that was originally inserted by the HomeAway/VRBO team and we did not manage to get it corrected yet ...! Monthiers is a village a bit south of ours... that might have complicated your GPS, sorry about that...
