Hi, we're Alan and Carol Hemphill. We live in the tranquil foothills of NC about 1 hour south of our mountain property. We have 2 lovely daughters, 4 dogs, and 2 cats. Carol is a corporate trainer in the financial industry; Alan is the proud owner of The Fresh Depot Restaurant located in Hickory, NC, and an eBay store listed as cookwareconnection.
Alan and Carol Hemphill purchased this house in 2011
We love this area for its scenic beauty and array of recreational, educational, and cultural activities and events. From the peaks of Grandfather Mountain, to the depths of Linville Gorge and Caverns, there's just no place like it on Earth. Come find out for yourselves.
We enjoy the quiet majesty of the mountains in a community setting. The neighborhood hiking trail, swimming pool, and tennis court are a stone's throw from our driveway. The best ski slopes in NC are 10 minutes away. The first stay at our house was Thanksgiving 2011. The greatest thing about our house is it provides one place for such a large group, which gave us all the chance for more family time. Parents with little children don't have to go back to their hotel room and stay with the little ones. We had 17 and this was the first year we all got to stay in one location. The kitchen works great, with one range and one cook top, enough 'eyes' for our short order breakfasts. Toaster and toaster oven producing bagels and toast. while the Keurig and a 14 cup coffee maker woke us all up. The three 80 gallon water heaters made sure there were no cold showers. The cousins that don't get to spend as much together time as we did when we were little really got some quality time together. So what makes our house so unique isn't even there. It is in all the cars that pull up and unload your family. Then the most wonderful family experience begins!
Hi again! I wanted to find out what mattresses you have at your Clubhouse residence? I was just there a few weeks ago and I swear, I haven't had a good nights sleep since. I slept in the first bedroom on the right when you come up the front stairs.
We have stayed here every year for 3 years in a row.........family and friends gathering!!! Perfect for us......each bedroom has it's own bathroom, plenty of room to dine together , and work together in the kitchen!! Love it!
16 of us enjoyed every minute of our stay. We love the private bathrooms in each bedroom. We love the large kitchen and dining area. We love the large living room/gathering room. We've stayed here in the past and we will continue to stay here when we visit the mountains!
Overall, our experience was very positive. Very large home with a bathroom in each bedroom, which is a big plus when there are 18 ladies staying there at once - and you know how women can get when they get into the bathroom. Ha ha! That was a very nice feature. Also, the kitchen was very well stocked with everything a cook could need! That was wonderful and made cooking there very pleasurable. It would be nice, though, if there were 2 refrigerators. One refrigerator does not allow for a lot of storage when we bring all of our own food and cook every meal at the retreat house. Beautiful surroundings and we even had coffee on the back deck and built a fire in the fire pit one morning. Very nice. Very peaceful community. Large meeting room allowed for all of us to gather together for our devotional, skits and game times. One thing that was a problem is that this is not a very handicap friendly home. The 2 bedrooms on the bottom floor have steps around sharp corners. This was hard for our 2 handicap ladies to maneuver. Would be nice to have a bedroom with no steps to accommodate the handicap people staying there. A few of the mattresses need to be changed. A few were very lumpy and sagged in the middle. Again, overall, we would not hesitate to stay here once again. Overall, it was a very enjoyable stay and one that we will always remember positively. We had a lot of laughs and some very late nights there. The owners were very accessible. Looking forward to next years retreat already.
The house was great. We liked that each bedroom had its own bathroom. There were plenty of activities in the area. Some of our group voted to come back next summer, but others reminded me that we had agreed to go to the beach every other year. Oh, well. Maybe in 2018.
This place is great for large groups. Would highly recommend. Great for kids and people of all ages. Love the large spacious kitchen, bedrooms and baths. Will definitely be back. The pool, swings and tennis courts was a hit for the kids.
The house is great - we loved that every room had a bathroom and the pictures were pretty accurate to the house. There are a ton of small things that could be done to the house that would make us come back every year. First, the mattresses/beds are pretty bad. There are a few that look so lumpy, that we thought there were pillows under the covers. 1-2 beds were barely sleep-able. A lot of the furniture are antiques (which I loved) but that also meant that some drawers didn't work, etc. There were a lot of little things that needed fixing - closest that were off their tracks, etc. The house just needs a little TLC. One other thing I would recommend is to be in contact with the owners (who were very nice and responsive) about the community pool and tennis courts. We had several people pack tennis rackets only to find that the tennis courts were being re-done the week we were there! That would have been nice to know. Also, when we got there we had to ask for the pool code and the owner was thinking that the pool may be closed the week we were there for maintenance too. Thankfully it wasn't, we had several kids with us and planned to spend most of our time at the pool. These things would have been really nice to know upfront and scary to think that you could show up with your family expecting to play tennis and swim all week and not be able to. That's a big deal (for us at least). The internet is pretty slow too - one small router for that many guests just doesn't cut it but thankfully, we were all gathering to get away from technology so it worked out. The AC broke while we were there too but it was pretty quick to be fixed (a lot of filters needed changed). Overall, it's a great house and a great location, it just needs a little love and we'll be back!!
