Habaru House is a terrific home base for all your Belize adventures. Ideal for families, a gentle sloping beach with little or no walk by traffic on the beach. We are located on one of the nicest beaches in then country. Enjoy the beautiful oceanfront from the white sand beach or second floor-covered patio with its exotic cane ceiling. On the beach for your use are beach chairs under a Mayan palapa, a lazy day hammock, and an outside charcoal grill.
South of the Village of Hopkins proper the Habaru House is 12-20 minute walk to 10 outstanding oceanfront restaurants and several road side eateries. I call this area “South Hopkins”. Email me for a 'map of Doug’s favorites'. The Village of Hopkins proper is a short bicycle ride away on one of our owner supplied bicycles or rent a golf cart from us.
The Habaru House living area is on the second and third floor (see floor plans in picture area). Local artwork and wall hangings enhance the atmosphere. If you choose to cook in you will enjoy the fully equipped kitchen with mahogany cabinets adjacent to the dining and living areas. Or have our housekeeper cook for you- she is an independent contractor.
The flooring in the living area is Italian marble; bedroom floors are barbajalote, all exterior and interior trim are Belize mahogany and vaulted ceilings a mixture of exotic hardwoods. Doors are hand made from local “poison wood”, known for its outstanding wood grain. The spacious master bedroom suite has exotic cane ceilings and a large master bathroom.
The Habaru House, Hopkins is centrally located to reach many of Belize’s exciting activities.

The fishing is wonderful! If fresh lobster and conch are something you are looking for, you have come to the right place! Best restaurants in Belize. Or go into the village and eat at one of the local restaurants and enjoy a local cultural “Garifuna” dish.
The 4-bedroom house has a second level common reading area with a queen size pull out sofa that can accommodate 2 people in the winter season. This home features all of the comforts of home; flat screen TV, cd player, iPod player, appliances, reading materials. We have dust to dawn neighborhood security. You will not be roughing it on this Belize adventure! Check out the photos.
Don’t feel like cleaning, cooking, or doing the laundry on vacation? We can arrange all of these for an additional charge. Make your vacation a true vacation!. Transportation to and from Dangriga airport or from BZE International can be arranged.
A full time crew maintains our properties. They rake the beaches, arrange for the kayaks, and handle any of your concerns. Just ask!! We also have a river side property Bocatura Bank , nature preserve, that you are welcome to visit and kayak the river. Co-ordiante with Anthony and Gil. see VRBO 464737 for an overview.
The Habaru House also has a ground floor apartment Habaru 31 G (VRBO 45542). The one bedroom unit is connected with an internal lockable stairwell and maybe rented in addition to the Habaru House for expanding the total capacity of the rental.
How to get here: Major airlines fly into Belize International Airport (BZE). From there you have two options: rent a car and drive down to Hopkins or take one of the regional carriers (Tropic Air or Maya Air) to the Dangriga Airport where we can arrange to pick you up.
Let us help you have a vacation to remember!
Individuals/groups looking for a "party house" should look elsewhere, this a quiet beach front area, and if there are complaints we will evict with 12 hour notice.
Saltwater fly fishing was the addiction that brought my family to Hopkins, Belize but it was the laid back atmosphere and warm, friendly people of Hopkins that made our decision to build a home an easy one.
Doug Barber purchased this house in 2008
Hopkins was a natural choice for me. The flats are a quick panga ride away and the local restaurants are just down the beach. If you are looking for a relaxed, laid back town, Hopkins fits the bill perfectly.
Habaru House is set on a double lot for added privacy. The huge back deck is a perfect place for your morning coffee or gather with family and friends as you gaze over the Caribbean Sea. Many mornings you will find flocks of Green Parrots in the tree surrounding the house.
Thank you so much for the house. Hopkins is such an amazing little village and made the perfect spot for our family vacation. We went hiking through the jungle, snorkelling out in the reef, kayaking, and tubing on the river and just longed about on the beach. A few more high lights included Driftwood pizza and Chef Robs, both highly recommended.
What a great places. Thanks again.
Enjoyed touring the area the Mayan Ruins, Cockscomb Jaguar preserve, and close proximity to excellent restaurants . The staff was friendly and helpful.
I enjoyed waking up in the morning and looking out on to the ocean. Then having coffee and breakfast on the oceanfront patio. A very quiet location.
extremely clean, i plan on returning next Fall for a longer period of time.
Just completed a Spring Break week vacation consisting of two families (4 Adults, 4 Children ages 7-14). This was the first visit to Belize for all of us. We found the Habaru House in Hopkins to be a fantastic base for our week of activities. The house itself is new, clean, large, and well-stocked with plenty of "comfort items" (kitchen supplies, kayaks life jackets, bicycles, 5 gallon bottled water, etc.). Beds were comfortable, and all bedrooms included A/C and ceiling fans for a good night's sleep.
Anthony introduced himself on our first morning, and worked to clean up the beach, empty trash, etc. His crew spent much of our first day raking up & removing the seaweed/trash that had washed up, returned the second morning to repeat the job, and- fortunately- had very little beach work to take care of for the next 5 days (weeds seemed to be hitting resorts down the road on these days). My impression is that you won't be able to guarantee if mother nature will send debris to your area of the beach or not, but Anthony's crew appeared to address tings with as much effort as any 2-3 man crew could have.
There are basically 2 options for vacationing in this area. Many people choose one of the local resorts- all of which will encourage you to utilize their all-inclusive dining options, as well as arranging all excursions/tours. Most people using these options don't rent a car, and choose to bicycle/golf cart around dirt roads of Hopkins. This option comes with limitations regarding schedules and excursion options.
I'm happy we chose Habaru House and rental cars instead of a resort. The 2.5 hour drive to/from the BZE was quite easy, and having cars was fantastic for exploring the area on our own schedule. All of nearby resorts (Jaguar Reef, Beaches & Dreams, Barracuda, ...) will gladly welcome you into their beachfront bars/restaurants, and we even spent two afternoons using their swimming pools (after paying for a lunch and/or bar tab). During the week, we were able to visit nearly every restaurant/bar/store in Hopkins, as well as drive to Palcencia, take a riverboat tour to the bioluminescence lagoon, & visit the local national park for Ziplining/hiking using our car.
1. Snorkeling out a the Cayes was amazing, and the favorite experience for most adults (Anthony arranged)
2. Internet Service in Hopkins are sporadic at best... Cell Phones (or Mobile Hotspots) will be limited to 3G speeds
3. BRING LOT'S OF INSECT REPELLANT
If you're looking for a house with a beautiful beach right out the back door this might be the house for you however during our week the sea grass was piled up thick and high and across the entire beach length of the property. The other properties on either side of us had been cleared of it and when I asked Anthony and Doug about it they both told me it was Mother Nature. Odd then that the rest of the beach front on either side of us had been cleaned maintained and there was no sea grass. Anthony did make efforts to clear it away after emailing the owner and by the time we left to go home the beach was almost cleaned and ready for the next guest. Sand flies are terrible and a lot of our bites were from sitting on the patio.
The house is beautiful and clean with a few minor problems but if it's the beach you're after you might want to look elsewhere.
Located in a very quite street, the house is great, and fully furnished with a great view of the bay. the grounds keeper and his wife Dana where great. Dana cooks a very good Belizean dinner. We felt very secure in the area.
A down side is the population of sand flies. They are very small with a big bite. Secret to dealing with the sand flies is to put baby oil on exposed skin. They don't like it.
The house was actually even better than what it shows in the pics - clean, spacious, really big patio. Comfortable furniture both inside and out. Hopkins was a much smaller village than we expected (thought it would be more like Bucerias, on Banderas Bay). Good restaurants within walking distance. Doug has the place really well managed, his staff are very accessible. The only down-side to the trip was the sand fleas. They are impervious even to DEET, and we all were bitten up badly. If bug bites aren't an issue for you, I would most definitely recommend this place.
There were 5 of us traveling together and stayed at Habaru house for 5 days and 4 nights. It accommodates 10 people, has a fully stocked kitchen, plenty of towels, all appliances functioned properly. Anthony, the property manager, was there to check on us every day to be sure we didn't need anything. We hired his wife to cook a Belizean meal for us the 2nd night we were there and we had left overs for 2 days. There are lots of restaurants nearby, we ate at the Lucky Lobster and Paddle in the Jaguar Reef hotel. Both were very good! There is a full house on the top 2 floors and a smaller apartment on the bottom floor, they are rented separately. I slept in the master and listened to the waves all night. In the morning I sat on the patio and had my coffee with a view of the Caribbean Sea. From the patio go down the steps and you are on the beach. We made use of the kayaks and bicycles provided with the rental. There is also a washer and dryer on the property so we could pack light and do laundry, which was a huge bonus. I would definitely stay here again should I come back to Hopkins Beach.
Habaru House is a great location from which to base all of your Belize adventures! We are about 2 hours away from Belize's famous cave tubing and zip-lining. About the same from Belize's best Mayan ruins. Local Birding and Wildlife tours can be arranged for privately or through the near by resorts. Habaru House is located just a short beach walk away from some of Hopkins best eateries. Best of all the beautiful Caribbean Ocean is only steps away from your back door.
