About Doug Barber
Saltwater fly fishing was the addiction that brought my family to Hopkins, Belize but it was the laid back atmosphere and warm, friendly people of Hopkins that made our decision to build a home an easy one.
Doug Barber purchased this House in 2008
Why Doug Barber chose Hopkins
Hopkins was a natural choice for me. The flats are a quick panga ride away and the local restaurants are just down the beach. If you are looking for a relaxed, laid back town, Hopkins fits the bill perfectly.

Great home for our family vacation
There are so many things to list on what made this home great for our first extended family vacation. We loved the location in a quiet area. The beach area was great for lounging, bird watching, seeing the sunrise, and throwing the frisbee. The house is very spacious. The four bathrooms were a must for our family when we were picking a place. The kitchen was well equipped with all the essentials. The kayaks an bicycles on site were awesome as we used them several times during our stay. We enjoyed getting to know Anthony. He was very friendly and shared his knowledge about the area with us. My husband engaged in a lot of shop talk with him about construction in the area. We really enjoyed our time in Hopkins and look forward to going back!
Thank you for the positive review. Anthony and Dana, our Belize Property Managers, do an outstanding job. Need something.. just ask them! Something broken or not working properly.. just ask them. Anthony and Dana have tools, supplies and authority to solve problems for our guests. Use the cell phone we provid in the unit to reach them.
They are a wealth of information of local happenings.. contact Anthony when you arrive at the house to book snorkeling or land tours with local families that have proven to give a great value, safely. We make no commission on a tour booked with Anthony’s help. .
Beautiful Home and Even Better Vibes
From the moment we booked this house to the moment we left, Doug and his crew were outstanding. I was able to talk to Doug over VRBO messenger and ask him questions about our upcoming visit and he was able to help out in every way possible.
He set us up with Charlton and that was the last thing we had to worry about during our time in Hopkins. Doug and Charlton treated me, and my party of 6, like family. They made our brief stay in the village a memorable one.
Pictures can’t do the house justice. The house was stunning and right on the water! You can go there and just hang out at the house and get a perfect Belize experience. There are multiple docks surrounding the house for fishing, there are plenty of kayaks to go explore the water, and if you do want to venture out of the house there were enough bikes for 6 of us.
We had such an amazing time and hopefully one day we can make it back and stay even longer. I would go back and book this house in a heart beat.
Final note: If you are worried about spotty Wi-Fi, paved roads, and bugs you need to look into visiting a different country, not a different house. This place is truly a Belizean gem.
Clean, spacious, well furnished house.
Great location, nice house, great house managers.
Great place, great people!
Our family of 6, two seniors, two adults and two teens, stayed for 9 days at Habaru House. Everything was considered by Doug, Anthony and Dana. Doug provided lots of information including how to get to the house and the layout of Hopkins. Once you arrive the kitchen is supplied with all the amenities including a first aid kit and the beds are very comfortable. There are books and games as well as bikes and kayaks. We arranged to have Dana cook a meal, which was fantastic, and there were enough leftovers for a couple more. The wifi is pretty unreliable but the Oasis Gym down the road has free wifi and good coffee. Anthony came by a couple of times to make sure everything was good and made arrangements for a snorkeling trip. Two thumbs up for the house, location and great service. I would recommend this place to anyone!
Thank you for your review. Our Belzian property managers do a great job for our guests. Dana and Anthony can easily be reached with the Preprogrammed cell phone we provid.
Wi-fi, it’s Belize! We changed wi-fi providers to the same one the Oasis Cafe has but the signal deteriorates in the short distance between the Oasis and our house :(
Pleased you enjoyed and took advantage of the bikes and kayaks, this is a great place for families to vacation.
Absolutely perfect family location.
This trip was planned as a family celebration for my wife’s milestone 40th birthday and my mother’s 70th birthday. The house is truly beautiful. Options and amenities keep you with a first world lifestyle in a third world country. We were 11 people, so we rented the house and the lower apartment 31G. The care takers, Anthony and Dana, will make sure nothing is wrong with your stay. Dana will also cook for you if you schedule her in advance (highly recommended). There are kayaks on site that you can use to explore the local coastline which we throughly enjoyed. We also did a local snorkeling tour (Anthony organized) at 60 USD per person, that was breathtaking. This is a great place if you are here for a short period of time (one week) and wanting to stay local. Why? It is about a 3 hour drive through very degraded roads filled with potholes and a few one way bridges. We were unfortunate to arrive after a heavy rain and Hopkins roads are all dirt. This eqiviliates to your last ten minutes of driving to be quite unpleasant. The day we left they were regrading it. Some reviews complain about the bugs. We had very little until the last day. It will be luck of the draw based on current weather conditions. Recommendations: Do use Dana for a few or more meals. Don’t do the coastal highway as it is not paved or recommended by anyone. Some Canadians I met took that road and expressed a deep regret for trying it. While it is shorter on paper it will cost you dearly on time.
Bottom line: this is a great place to recharge and unplug from the rat race. If you expect this to be an office getaway with connectivity...don’t. The internet is spotty at best and you will be lucky to get an occasional email update. That was one of my favorite parts:)
We have done Grand Cayman, St. Lucia, St. Martin, St Croix, North Eleuthera (Bahamas), Puerto Rico, and Maui. Our Belieze trip is one of the few we may consider repeating mostly due to these accommodations.
Pleased you enjoyed the house and beach.
We keep switching back and forth between the two internet providers in the village but continue to have poor service. If you need to move a larger document the Oasis Cafe is located right next to the internet booster station and gets good wi-fi.
I find the roads very good, but not up to US standard. All the main roads are paved and over half have been rebuilt to US standards. The single lane bridges are old railway trestles and are slowly being replaced with two lane bridges. Ask me for detailed driving instructions if you plan to drive down from the airport.
A trip to Belize is always a happy “adventure”.
It was a fabulous house in a delightful location! We had a fantastic time!
Rarely do you rent someplace and it actually looks like it does in the pictures, but this house was spot on! Quaint town, lovely people helping us that are connected to the house, gorgeous view. Exactly what we were looking for on our Belize adventure!
Anthony and Dana, our Belize property managers, understand these vacations are family memories in the making. The house, house keeping and maintenance are the best in the area. Pleased you in enjoyed your Belize home. cheers, doug
Habaru House is a great location from which to base all of your Belize adventures! We are about 2 hours away from Belize's famous cave tubing and zip-lining. About the same from Belize's best Mayan ruins. Local Birding and Wildlife tours can be arranged for privately or through the near by resorts. Habaru House is located just a short beach walk away from some of Hopkins best eateries. Best of all the beautiful Caribbean Ocean is only steps away from your back door.
