Absolutely perfect

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time we stayed at this home and we will absolutely stay again. Here is what we loved: perfect view, amazing yard with versatile foliage, functional kitchen with plenty of ware for everyone, very comfortable beds AND futons with plenty of high quality linens, good airflow with doors and fans, three bathrooms all of which are very nice, good outdoor lighting for late night walks between floors, good layout for privacy when needed. Above all, that lanai! The lanai is gorgeous with comfortable furniture for everyone as well as a table for outdoor dining. There are sunscreens that move up and down as needed. It is covered mostly so rain or shine you are comfortable. The beautiful ocean is right at your front steps and the beautiful mountain range is directly behind you. The entire property is very tastefully cared for and decorated. Natural wood tones throughout. Prime whale watching. We really have zero complaints (other than the roosters waking a few people up but they did not bother me) and thank Pat so much for sharing her home with us. We will be back for sure. Bruce the caretaker is a gem which you will understand if you get the chance to meet him and spend a little time. Some regard Makaha as too rough around the edges for a good vacation. We completely disagree. The locals are warm and oh so funny if you just take the time to get to know them. Shopping at Tamura is great and has all that you need at reasonable prices. Their poke bar is to die for. We recommend this home 100%

Just Like Home

  • 5 of 5

My family of 6, stayed for a week in November at the Pole House. We were so excited to finally get there! We had such an incredible time. The house is beautiful and was the base of our operations while we explored the island. Within 24 hours we saw a pod of spinner dolphins from the Lanai, humpback whales from Kaeau Beach (which is a 2 minute walk from the house)and my husband and sons encountered a monk seal while hiking Kaena Point Trail! We bought groceries in Wainae and cooked several meals in the spacious kitchen. We loved the Lanai, such a peaceful place to sit and reflect, We can't wait to come back, the home is well equipped with every amenity that a family needs, the kitchen is well equipped, washer and dryer, linens and very spacious. The location was great, the locals are very friendly and generous (especially if you are so) and it was nice to be away from the more commercialized parts of the island. In closing, I must mention the owners and their local caretaker, Uncle Bruce; they were very responsive to any questions or concerns we had and provided us all the resources we asked to make our stay memorable and pleasant. This is a wonderful and relaxing home away from home.

What a beautiful home and view of the ocean!! We had such a wonderful time. The house offered everything we needed for a very comfortable stay and fun at the beach. And yes..we saw whales and dolphins from the deck. A special thanks to the owners...they were so thoughtful to check in and make sure everything was in order and to answer any questions we had. We had an AWESOME TIME!!!!

The property is beautiful!

  • 4 of 5

The property is beautiful and a perfect spot for a quiet vacation. This was our first time to Honolulu so keep in mind there is travel from Wainae (beach house) to all the tourist spots, such as, Pearl Harbor, waterfalls, Dole plantation, downtown etc. We learned quickly not to travel during rush hour 6-8am or 3-7pm. If it wasn't for the traffic, the distance is not too bad. The house is gorgeous and the area is peaceful. As mentioned previously there are a lot of homeless camps around, but we noticed that's basically all of Honolulu. The house is located in an area that feels safe. We had a few mishaps, but Pat did everything she could to fix it - so we rolled with it. She was quick to problem solve and was very attentive! My only suggestion would have the housekeepers dust under and around the beds and wash the dishes better. We felt we needed to clean everything prior to using them. Overall, a wonderful vacation spot!

Makaha Pole House...were memories are made!

  • 5 of 5

Well....what can I say about a place that speaks to my being.

The ocean there whispers to me...slow down, look around and breath in beauty.

To stand on the black lava rock wall which separates me from the ocean, a magestic mountain stands right behind me strong and impenetrable. So close that I could touch it. It sends down a cool breeze that plays with the coconut fronds a mysterious tune. It sounds familiar. Maybe from my past?

The cool morning breeze brings a pleasant surprise of boats searching for wild spinner dolphins. But....those same dolphins were already here!

With my warm cup of java brew in hand....those dolphins gave me a private performance just minutes ago?

Do I really have to say anymore????

Sixth time at the pole house. Coming back next year!!!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at the pole house six times in the last four years. This should indicate how much we enjoy this property. The views are awesome. We even saw the spinner dolphins this time. In the past we have seen a whale swim by and some kind of bill fish breaking the water.

About Pat White

Born and raised on the island of Oahu, we found ourselves on the mainland for many years and reminisced about childhood memories of discovering life in tide pools at our family's beach cottage. After a 10 year search we found a home--the Makaha Pole House--where we can create memories with our children. We love the unspoiled beauty of Makaha and the time we spend watching the waves, seeing dolphins and whales, and enjoying the cooling tradewinds. Simply put, we love Hawaii and Makaha and hope you will love your visit to the Makaha Pole House!

Pat White purchased this house in 2012

Why Pat White chose Mākaha

Why Makaha you might ask, because Makaha is a place where time stood still. I can still sit out on the deck chairs, early in the morning and watch fishermen with hand thrown nets waiting for fish to swim by and catch. Where spinner dolphins still entertain you, right in front of your eyes or the warm sun setting in full color from your deck chair.

That is why we waited patiently for the right place to come along.

What makes this house unique

Makaha Pole House is our home. It is where our kids can enjoy the beauty of rediscovering the old tide pools, catch waves on a boogie board or enjoy the spectacular sunsets with ohana (family). The lanai (deck) is where we (and you will) spend most of your time. Pictures can not capture the beauty of the view or the sound of the waves on the coral reef. When you arrive you will walk in the furnished comfortable house (say 'wow') and head to the lanai to watch the waves and look for dolphins and whales. You know that you are staying in paradise!

Guestbook comments from the owner

On Thursday, December 5, 2013, Amy Veysey wrote:

Hi Pat,

We enjoyed everything about the house. This was the fourth house we stayed in and everyone agreed that it was the nicest one. Several times I asked my in-laws if they wanted to go to the beach and everyone said: "Why? We have everything we need right here." The only complaint I heard was that my mother-in-law found the deck too distracting to read her book because she kept having to watch the waves instead of read :)

We did not mind the rain - in fact it was nice to cool off a bit because we're not used to the heat!

Thanks again.

Makaha Beach is Oahu's second most popular snorkeling site. The clear, aqua blue water with little current is superb for snorkeling in summer. There are underwater caverns, arches, and tunnels as deep as 40 feet. Sea life includes schools of taape, octopuses, several species of eels, green sea turtles, transiting dolphins, and sometimes manta and eagle rays.

Across from Makaha State Beach, is a Souvenir and Ocean sports equipment shop, where you can either purchase or rent various equipment to enjoy ocean sports.

One of the nicest, most peaceful and calm beaches in the area, both summer and winter, is called Waianae Beach at Pokai Bay. Located on this beach is the Recreation Area and the Waianae Beach Resort for the Military. It is located about 5 minutes from the house by car going south, just after passing Seven Eleven, and turning right on Army Street. Park on the street, and bring photo ID to pass the Security Gate. The Waianae Beach Club offers great food, and a fantastic ocean view from the dining lanai. The Club restaurant has restricted times of service. Kayaks, boats, and other beach accessories can be rented right there on the beach. A small store is conveniently located on the beach, stocked with all necessities for an enjoyable time at the beach.

Visit the Disney Resort at Koolina, which is located about 20 minutes south of the property.

For a round of golf or a brunch, check out the Makaha Resort and Golf Club, which is just 5 minutes from the house.
