Born and raised on the island of Oahu, we found ourselves on the mainland for many years and reminisced about childhood memories of discovering life in tide pools at our family's beach cottage. After a 10 year search we found a home--the Makaha Pole House--where we can create memories with our children. We love the unspoiled beauty of Makaha and the time we spend watching the waves, seeing dolphins and whales, and enjoying the cooling tradewinds. Simply put, we love Hawaii and Makaha and hope you will love your visit to the Makaha Pole House!
Pat White purchased this house in 2012
Why Makaha you might ask, because Makaha is a place where time stood still. I can still sit out on the deck chairs, early in the morning and watch fishermen with hand thrown nets waiting for fish to swim by and catch. Where spinner dolphins still entertain you, right in front of your eyes or the warm sun setting in full color from your deck chair.
That is why we waited patiently for the right place to come along.
Makaha Pole House is our home. It is where our kids can enjoy the beauty of rediscovering the old tide pools, catch waves on a boogie board or enjoy the spectacular sunsets with ohana (family). The lanai (deck) is where we (and you will) spend most of your time. Pictures can not capture the beauty of the view or the sound of the waves on the coral reef. When you arrive you will walk in the furnished comfortable house (say 'wow') and head to the lanai to watch the waves and look for dolphins and whales. You know that you are staying in paradise!

We enjoyed everything about the house. This was the fourth house we stayed in and everyone agreed that it was the nicest one. Several times I asked my in-laws if they wanted to go to the beach and everyone said: "Why? We have everything we need right here." The only complaint I heard was that my mother-in-law found the deck too distracting to read her book because she kept having to watch the waves instead of read :)
We did not mind the rain - in fact it was nice to cool off a bit because we're not used to the heat!
My family and I stayed at the Hawaiian Pole house and had the most fantastic time! It was beautiful and private (there were multiple rainbows with butterflies flying by that could be seen from the back of the house). For most of our trip, we stayed nearby, going to Makaha beach to swim and cooking our own food in the well-equipped kitchen. We enjoyed the gorgeous sunsets from the lanai, which wraps around the entire house. If you bring a fishing rod, you can fish in the tide pools on the west side of the house and grill them on the lanai!
This is the perfect place to stay if you have a group of two couples or two families. The upper level has a master bed and bath, living room, kitchen and shared bathroom. The kitchen has huge granite countertops, dishes, and most pots and pans that you would need. The lower level has a bedroom, living room, and bathroom that is very small but definitely functional. There are futons in the living rooms.
The house has snorkeling equipment and boogie boards to use, and we did so almost every day at beautiful Makaha beach (which was never crowded).
We had a wonderful time in this beautiful place, and hope to come back as soon as possible!
Our family had a wonderful vacation at the Hawaiian Pole House. The ocean view from the house and spacious lanai was breathtaking. Every meal was eaten out on the lanai with the waves crashing nearby.
The front and back yards are well kept with night lights showcasing the yards at night.
We were very comfortable in the house and felt right at home.
Everything was provided from laundry soap, towels, beach gear (sand toys, beach chairs, snorkel gear) to all kitchen necessities (you only need to buy your food).
Thank you Pat for sharing your beautiful home with our family! Aloha
The home is amazing, the view, exceptional and the location is perfectly low key on the local side of the island. This home allowed us to escape the tourism but allowed convenience and access to different parts of the island. My family and I will never forget this week, and hope to return again one day!! The owners were very organized, communicative and showed amazing hospitality. Thank you so much for the opportunity to stay in your beautiful home. We are very happy and appreciative!!
Wonderful place to stay! Sitting on the deck*****! Accommodations inside ****.5 stars! The tide pools behind the house and the beaches nearby *****! Then you have the owner so eager to help with advice *****! We had 8 guest and was very comfortable.
My husband and I stayed at Pat & Dan White's pole house in May 2016. We rented the house for 7 nights and enjoyed every minute. The house is quite lovely but we spent most of our time on the large backyard deck overlooking the ocean. We saw dolphins swimming by almost every day right in front of us and the sunsets were beautiful but we were not prepared for the full moon shinning on the water at night. It was such a beautiful sight and something that we will never forget. We had a great time and would recommend this home to all our friends and family. Also, Pat White as very helpful and just a text away for any questions or suggestions of things to do.
Makaha is full of rugged beauty, the old hawaii. This home is wonderful and full of character. The pics and write-up are accurate, and of course, being there, living there, experiencing it, makes this place even better than the pics. Main floor living area is spacious (2 futon couches if needed). Large master bedroom with nice bath. Downstairs lives like a daylight basement that has been finished neat and well: 1 bdrm + BA + 2 futon couches in L-rm. House has W/D. Dishwasher. Nicely appointed. Love the cedar work throughout. Lots of ceiling fans to move air when the breeze doesn't. I didn't see any A/C but I am not the type to look for it. As expected, kitchen has bare bones ingredients in cupboards, so make sure to stop at Tamura Market (or other) so you have what you need, just 5-10 min away. The beach outside the seawall is volcanic reef, so don't expect to bask in the sand, but it's great for reef walking the tide pools and exploring. Access to the reef not over and down the tall wall, but via a trail to the south 1 lot over. Importantly, you won't be bothered by the sounds of the Farrington Hwy traffic, as the house is tucked away from it on its own residential loop. Expect roosters to crow before the sun comes up. Expect dogs to bark at all times of the day or night, as most residents seem to have them. Expect to hear the sounds of the waves crashing at all times, which most people love -- that's part of reason why you want beachfront, right? Like most places in the world, the farther you go from the big city, the friendlier they become, and this is no exception. Makaha people are friendly, love to laugh, love to talk and share and be helpful. In sum, if you want to stay at a place that is located 5-15 minutes from exceptional quiet, uncrowded, sandy beaches, live simply off the beaten track, a place that you don't want to leave, this is the place. If you want to do touristy stuff like Waikiki, Ala Moana shopping, this isn't the place. It's worth pointing out that ALL Hawaii homes have to deal with the following: geckos, ants, roaches. Expect to see them during your stay, especially if you leave food out, even dirty dishes in the D/W. Running a clean, tidy ship does well to alleviate pest problems. Neighbor and caretaker Bruce, apparently a very well respected dude of things water related and beyond, is available if you have any questions. Real nice guy. After all the fees, taxes, rates, what-not, it was worth it!
Makaha Beach is Oahu's second most popular snorkeling site. The clear, aqua blue water with little current is superb for snorkeling in summer. There are underwater caverns, arches, and tunnels as deep as 40 feet. Sea life includes schools of taape, octopuses, several species of eels, green sea turtles, transiting dolphins, and sometimes manta and eagle rays.
Across from Makaha State Beach, is a Souvenir and Ocean sports equipment shop, where you can either purchase or rent various equipment to enjoy ocean sports.
One of the nicest, most peaceful and calm beaches in the area, both summer and winter, is called Waianae Beach at Pokai Bay. Located on this beach is the Recreation Area and the Waianae Beach Resort for the Military. It is located about 5 minutes from the house by car going south, just after passing Seven Eleven, and turning right on Army Street. Park on the street, and bring photo ID to pass the Security Gate. The Waianae Beach Club offers great food, and a fantastic ocean view from the dining lanai. The Club restaurant has restricted times of service. Kayaks, boats, and other beach accessories can be rented right there on the beach. A small store is conveniently located on the beach, stocked with all necessities for an enjoyable time at the beach.
Visit the Disney Resort at Koolina, which is located about 20 minutes south of the property.
For a round of golf or a brunch, check out the Makaha Resort and Golf Club, which is just 5 minutes from the house.
