About Pat White

Born and raised on the island of Oahu, we found ourselves on the mainland for many years and reminisced about childhood memories of discovering life in tide pools at our family's beach cottage. After a 10 year search we found a home--the Makaha Pole House--where we can create memories with our children. We love the unspoiled beauty of Makaha and the time we spend watching the waves, seeing dolphins and whales, and enjoying the cooling tradewinds. Simply put, we love Hawaii and Makaha and hope you will love your visit to the Makaha Pole House!

Pat White purchased this house in 2012

Why Pat White chose Oahu

Why Makaha you might ask, because Makaha is a place where time stood still. I can still sit out on the deck chairs, early in the morning and watch fishermen with hand thrown nets waiting for fish to swim by and catch. Where spinner dolphins still entertain you, right in front of your eyes or the warm sun setting in full color from your deck chair.

That is why we waited patiently for the right place to come along.

What makes this house unique

Makaha Pole House is our home. It is where our kids can enjoy the beauty of rediscovering the old tide pools, catch waves on a boogie board or enjoy the spectacular sunsets with ohana (family). The lanai (deck) is where we (and you will) spend most of your time. Pictures can not capture the beauty of the view or the sound of the waves on the coral reef. When you arrive you will walk in the furnished comfortable house (say 'wow') and head to the lanai to watch the waves and look for dolphins and whales. You know that you are staying in paradise!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Pat,

We enjoyed everything about the house. This was the fourth house we stayed in and everyone agreed that it was the nicest one. Several times I asked my in-laws if they wanted to go to the beach and everyone said: "Why? We have everything we need right here." The only complaint I heard was that my mother-in-law found the deck too distracting to read her book because she kept having to watch the waves instead of read :)

We did not mind the rain - in fact it was nice to cool off a bit because we're not used to the heat!

Thanks again.

Sincerely,

Amy.

No need to drive to the beach...

  • 5 of 5

...when you can sit on the lanai, here. Dolphins, sunset, Makaha beach park just ten minutes walk away, and a secret swimming hole just five minutes in the other direction. We saw turtles, even a rare monk seal!

Of course if you want to do stuff, Makua beach just up the road is good for snorkelling, Pokai Bay for SUP, Waianae Harbor for cruises.

This is a place for people who want to get off the beaten track, who aren't intimidated by the outdated reputation the West side has, who can respect and enjoy the local culture. If you want expensive dining and resort type stuff, it's not far to drive to Ko Olina, but we really enjoyed the local eateries: Hannaras, Spinners Cafe, Saito and Pho, and Barbecue Kai.

The house itself is a perfect combination of style and low maintenance comfort (for you the guest, I mean: Pat puts a lot of work into the place). I just love the wraparound lanai (porch) and canvas blinds that look like crab claw sails. You are right on top of the water - there's a little rocky shelf with tide pools and a small blowhole. It's not somewhere you can swim safely, but frankly, that ensures your privacy. Waianae can get hot, but here on the coast there's usually a little breeze. And the night sky, far from the city, really blows you away.

Location...location..location

  • 5 of 5

Pat and Dan were great hosts who were always willing to provide information on the area and promptly responded to our emails. The Pole House was everything they said it would be. We especially liked the lanai and found ourselves spending most mornings and evenings there enjoying the sounds of the waves breaking over the volcanic rocks and the spectacular sunsets. The bed in the upstairs bedroom was very comfortable and the sound of the waves lulled us to sleep.

The town of Makaha where the house is located is not an area that tourists visit compared to Waikiki which is what made the location so appealing. If you are the kind of traveler who enjoys experiencing a state/country "through the backdoor" and want to avoid the tourist hangouts, this is the place for you. We would not want to stay anywhere else on the island.

The beaches nearby were some of the best on the island. They were never too crowded and were within walking distance. There is excellent snorkeling in the area.

Other than drive-ins and fast food outlets, there aren't many restaurants in the area. This wasn't a problem for us as we dined in most evenings and ate on the lanai enjoying the sunset.

If driving you would be wise to avoid driving during rush hour (between 3:30-6:30). The traffic on highway 93 which is the main road along the west coast can get very heavy and what would normally be a short trip can become a very long slog. This just gave us another reason to sit on the lanai and enjoy happy hour!

This was our first trip to Hawaii and we were not disappointed.

Thanks Pat and Dan!

Beautiful home with gorgeous view

  • 5 of 5

Comfortable and spacious house. With the houses on either side unoccupied during our stay, we had the Pacific Ocean to ourself. The surrounding area was a bit run down, but we felt safe enough to sleep with the door walls open. If you like to be off the beaten path, then the Pole House is for you.

Amazing location!

  • 5 of 5

I wish I was sitting out on that lanai right now! It was gorgeous. The house was clean and well appointed. I appreciated the nice washer/dryer and dishwasher. The kitchen had everything we needed to make great meals and we even used the gas grill a few nights. I was concerned about the lack of A/C because we had a few 85 degree days, but with the windows open and the fans on, it was fine. We had a wonderful vacation and will definitely stay again if we're back on Oahu!

Fantastic!!!

  • 5 of 5

The Makaha Pole House was simply an amazing place for my husband and our friends to stay. We were looking for a place away from Honolulu and Waikiki, rather slower pace and a quieter environment. The Makaha Pole House was perfect!

The awesome lanai completely surrounding a majority of the house allowed us the freedoms to barbecue and eat our dinners outside and lounge in the lounge chairs and sit with our morning coffee with the ocean right in our back garden! We sat in chairs with out feet on the sea wall and took afternoon naps as the sun and the ocean eased the fast pace of everyday life back at home.

Time and time again, the whales would visit - it was amazing to see them far and near shore. And then, the spinner dolphins breached! It was breathtaking!!!

As for the sunrises and sunsets...just incredible... Yes, the Makaha Pole House is away from the hustle and bustle of mainstream Oahu...but that's the beauty of it. We thoroughly enjoyed the peace and tranquility...

Makaha Beach is Oahu's second most popular snorkeling site. The clear, aqua blue water with little current is superb for snorkeling in summer. There are underwater caverns, arches, and tunnels as deep as 40 feet. Sea life includes schools of taape, octopuses, several species of eels, green sea turtles, transiting dolphins, and sometimes manta and eagle rays.

Across from Makaha State Beach, is a Souvenir and Ocean sports equipment shop, where you can either purchase or rent various equipment to enjoy ocean sports.

One of the nicest, most peaceful and calm beaches in the area, both summer and winter, is called Waianae Beach at Pokai Bay. Located on this beach is the Recreation Area and the Waianae Beach Resort for the Military. It is located about 5 minutes from the house by car going south, just after passing Seven Eleven, and turning right on Army Street. Park on the street, and bring photo ID to pass the Security Gate. The Waianae Beach Club offers great food, and a fantastic ocean view from the dining lanai. The Club restaurant has restricted times of service. Kayaks, boats, and other beach accessories can be rented right there on the beach. A small store is conveniently located on the beach, stocked with all necessities for an enjoyable time at the beach.

Visit the Disney Resort at Koolina, which is located about 20 minutes south of the property.

For a round of golf or a brunch, check out the Makaha Resort and Golf Club, which is just 5 minutes from the house.
