Are you looking for a place to get really excited about? Welcome to Flying Toucans... where the sights and sounds of wildlife, open-air tropical living and unforgettable views have all been captured in one special place.
Enjoy reading the reviews about this luxurious Costa Rican Villa situated on a unique, picturesque point on the southern Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. With lots of surrounding jungle, you have all the exclusive privacy needed to enjoy your home in peace...with the exception of some noisy visitors. Yes, the monkeys and the toucans can sound off at any time without first introducing themselves.
Superbly located in Costa Rica's Maritime Zone (within 200 meters of the shoreline), Flying Toucans is one of the very few luxury home rentals in the area that is on the ocean side of the main coastal road. This unique location affords up close breathtaking views of jungle-clad mountains, sandy beaches, and the tranquil Pacific Ocean with quick, level, convenient 2wd access all year long. If you like beaches, you are in luck as we have an abundance nearby. From the villa, take a short hike down to the point and discover two secluded beaches (one with its own 35' waterfall) or jump in your car and within five minutes be exploring miles of uncrowded footstep-free sandy beaches.
The living and dining rooms offer the romance of open-air tropical living, blending the comforts of home with the nearness of wildlife. The living room or kitchen are great central locations to gather and enjoy all that Flying Toucans has to offer. Plenty of seating for everyone. Don't be surprised at the abundant hummingbird and butterfly population and one cruises through making a cameo appearance.
The large fully-equipped kitchen, with its' beautiful custom cabinetry, and casual eating area is integrated with the living room, pool and views beyond. Whip up a smoothie or a six course meal...your choice.
Did we mention the pool? Once in, you'll never get out of this infinity-edge pool. Just three steps from the villa, the turquoise tile blends into the dazzling coastline and the popular Uvita 'Whale's Tail', a unique place to walk and explore. It overlooks Ballena (which means 'whale') beach National Marine Park so keep your eyes open for Humpback whales and Bottle-Nosed dolphins in the bay.
There is a half bath downstairs, outdoor shower as well as laundry room with full-sized washer and dryer.
Two well-furnished air-conditioned master suites are located upstairs. (King bed in one, Queen and Double in other). Each of the suites incorporates the use of local precious hardwoods for the doors, cabinets and vaulted ceilings. Relax in the comfort of air conditioning or open the windows and let the ocean breezes in. Too comfortable to get out of bed? Fine, enjoy the views from your pillow... now if you could just get someone to bring you breakfast!
Spacious bathrooms feature tumbled Colombian limestone showers and an openness that continues to let the outdoors in while providing all the privacy needed.
You will love taking advantage of the spacious terrace upstairs. It's perfect for wildlife viewing, whale watching, stargazing, photography, sunrises and sunsets, or just dozing off in the comfy hammock. Surrounding the villa are exotic heliconias, a variety of fragrant gingers, exotic palms, birds-of-paradise, fruit trees etc... not only for your enjoyment but to attract our fine feathered friends. Discover a tropical fruit of flower you've never seen or tasted before or that flowery scent. Where is it coming from?
Have you been searching for the perfect place in paradise? Eureka, you've found it! We invite you to stay in our home and experience it all.

Greetings from our villa called Flying Toucans! We first visited Costa Rica in November of 1998 on our honeymoon. Having both lived on Maui for many years and traveled extensively internationally, we were interested in a new adventure and a memorable challenge. We had read about the country for several years prior to our visit and it sounded as though Costa Rica fit all of our criteria. After exploring the various regions of the country, meeting the people and having a delightful time we knew we were destined to relocate. As it happened, on this first trip, we discovered this one-of-a-kind property and purchased it. This set in motion our plans of eventually relocating. After more preparation, we made the move and actually lived in a tent on the property for several months while designing Flying Toucans. This allowed us to understand how best to showcase the awesome views and the wildlife while combining luxury with tropical living. Now that Flying Toucans has become a reality, we offer to share it with you. With years of experience in the luxury tourism industry, we believe we have created a truly unique beautiful place for you to call home while you embark on your own adventures. If you have been looking and looking for that special destination you will never forget, you have found it! Hope to see you here soon, :) John and Mary Reilly
Carefully compare the view, the privacy, the pool, the open air living design, the abundant wildlife, proximity to the ocean, easy 2wd access, read the reviews, but don't wait too long to decide as the calendar fills well in advance!
My sister, Tamara, has given your house and property the ultimate recommendation. She has been struggling with what to come back as in her next life ... a beach dog or a whale. Well, now she's decided to come back as your home! ... We have rented 7 houses in the area over the past 10 years and Flying Toucans is at the top of our list.
My wife and two teenage sons had the pleasure of a Costa Rican holiday over Christmas this winter, and we want to shout from the rooftops about the home we stayed in. Flying Toucans is a gem, hidden at the peak of some foothills along the west coast of Costa Rica. It was so nice to easily locate it, along a secluded private drive into the lush, landscaped point where Flying Toucans laid waiting for us, overlooking the “whale’s tale” of Uvita: Bahia Ballena. The layout of the property is just ideal: A wide-open ground-level floor plan, with doors really only for the powder room and the laundry room. Everything else designed to be part of the beautiful view, not at odds with it: Open plantation shutters, ceiling fans, outdoor furniture, comfortably appointed for being part of the natural environment, and showcasing the infinity pool and it’s lens to the beach and jutting foothills surrounding. We brought our Bluetooth speaker, and listened while reading, relaxing, eating, enjoying cocktails, playing games, and of course floating in the pool. Sounds that were foreign to an East Coast U.S. resident were met with curious looks, perked ears, and copious use of binoculars and cameras. Waking up in the morning before 6:00AM was not at all difficult, when presented with sunrise over the bay is breathtaking, and can be enjoyed from the hammock on the patio outside the master bedroom suite. Having a “bird”-feeder mounted over the small deck on the left provided ample opportunity to bring the wildlife to the doorstep, as we observed over a dozen species of birds come by, along with the occasional Monkey and Lemur. The kitchen had everything we needed - EVERYTHING - for eating in, saving leftovers if we ate out, cleaning, washing, preparing, grilling and cooking. From a coffeemaker with coffee, cream & sweetener to matches and coal for the grill, it was all there. Full laundry facilities, and a powder room on the first floor. Separate locked entrance to the 2nd floor with really spacious bedrooms, glorious stone showers, oversized bathrooms, remote-controlled air-conditioners, a hammock on the expansive 2nd floor patio, and a closet with books and games, for those occasional afternoon rainshowers. We were so happy there. We couldn’t think of a better gift to ourselves than to wallow in high-80s temperatures, listening, watching, and exploring the beauty of Central America.
The other reviews are spot on. If I could give Flying Toucans more than 5 stars, I would. Once you go, you will understand. This was our first week long house rental and let me just say the bar has been set very, very high. In fact, the reason we chose to go to Costa Rica was largely because of Flying Toucans.
We spent 10 nights at Flying Toucans to celebrate our five year anniversary at the end of November to the beginning of December. We knew this was the shoulder season (wet to dry season) and it was unseasonably rainy for that time of year. Even in the rain, the property is beautiful and the animals still come. (There was also a closet with some rainy day activities - just one example of how the owners have thought of everything but more on that later). The benefit of the shoulder season was less crowds and more time to get to know the locals.
First, the property is stunning! It is all about that view. The pictures were amazing but when we first saw it, it took our breath away and dissolved all stress almost immediately. You get sunrise and sunset views and a beautiful breeze which makes sitting outside very comfortable. We couldn't tear ourselves away from the house and didn't end up doing the excursions we thought we'd do. The privacy is great and you can't see another house. Of course, it is tropical and there are some bugs but overall, like the other reviews, there were less insects than we expected (and this was a selling point for me). Most of the nights, bug spray and the fans with strategic lighting were enough to keep the outdoor living room comfortable.
The inside of the house was also just as nice and well thought out. The house was spotless and is maintained very well (this isn't just "some rental property" but is taken care of as if the owners lived there full time). After lots of traveling, we notice the little things and everything was perfect. The kitchen is well stocked with almost anything you need to cook in which we did several nights. You don't need to pack much with the washer and dryer in the house. There are two nice sized bedrooms upstairs. The AC in the bedrooms was very nice and worked very well but was comfortable even in the afternoons with the fan. The bed and pillows were very comfortable and the linens were nice and soft. There are also no typical "hotel towels" (you know the ones that feel like sandpaper and barely cover a child or actually dry you). (Because of word limits here - see more on Tripadvisor).
We stayed in early August during the rainy season, and the whole week worked out perfectly. The Flying Toucans location is absolutely perfect - the view is amazing from sunrise to sunset. We were worried about mosquitos due to concerns about Zika, but we found very few mosquitos at the house itself, and not many bugs overall. Even at dusk when the most bugs were out, a quick spray of bug spray was enough to keep it comfortable.
During the stay we saw multiple types of monkeys, the toucan, the sloth, several types of lizards, geckos, butterflies, coati, etc. - all from the property itself. We saw more wildlife at the house than we did at a day trip to Hacienda Baru (local wildlife sanctuary).
The house itself worked out great. The upstairs bedrooms were easily cooled down with A/C in the evenings, and there is enough shade upstairs and down to make even the hottest parts of the afternoon comfortable. The water was safe to drink, the coffee maker worked great, the internet was tolerable (about 1 meg down, which was fine for e-mail and light web surfing). At the end of the day though this house is all about the view, and the privacy, and both were absolutely amazing. We stayed for a week and didn't see a single person from the property itself, other than using binoculars to see a beach about 5km away. Don't worry about how you look in your swimsuit at the house - nobody is around to care! You can hear traffic on the highway, but you won't see any other people or traffic from the property itself.
The restaurant at Cuna Del Angel was hit & miss - we had dinner there 3 times. One time was genuinely good, the other two times were ok, not great. Exotica, about 20 miles away, was a much better dinner, and the best experience for food were the local soda's.
Overall, we would have gladly stayed forever if the real-world allowed it. This was our best VRBO rental by far, and an absolutely, positively amazing place to stay. There's a reason Flying Toucans gets only 5 star reviews - it's one heck of a view, a lot of privacy, a great house, and a wonderful experience overall!
We enjoyed our stay at Flying Toucans! The pool, the view and the wild life were plenty enough entertainment for us. We were just there to relax, as we've been to Costa Rica several times. There are several excellent restaurants nearby and plenty of fresh fruit ti buy to snack on and/or have for breakfast.
You will not regret booking this place!
Flying Toucans was spectacular, a true escape from everyday life. Everything was immaculate and the setting could not be beat. We saw monkeys, toucans, and coatis. Mostly we floated in the pool and read and looked at the scenery. I have not seen a comparable place for rent. The caretaker and owner are so responsive with answering any questions. We loved the area because we rarely saw anyone, let alone other tourists. We ate at Exotica and Mama & Papa's twice each and they were basically in the rainforest/jungle and had outdoor seating and fantastic food. We were there for relaxation and Flying Toucans was our dream. The breezes were great in the day and the airconditioning in the bedrooms worked beautifully. I had the bathroom with a door that opened to the outside from the shower and I loved that experience. Really big comfortable bathrooms. I think the design of the house is perfect for the location and you can't see neighbors. In fact, on one side the yard goes downhill and there is a view of the Pacific in that direction also. I cannot recommend this place enough. Only caveat: watch the tile floors when your feet are wet. There are small rugs and I didn't realize how important they were and fell twice without thinking.
Exceeded our expectations! Daryl went above and beyond to make us comfortable and to assist in securing reservations. He was a blessing to us!
Very well manicured and maintained.
The area between Dominical and Uvita on the southern Pacific coast is famous for its striking landscape where the mountains come right down to the water. Not subject to the north's dry, dusty season during the months of December to April, visitors to the Dominical region will enjoy the year-round greenery and lushness of jungles and forests.
While the rural airport in Quepos (30 minutes north of Flying Toucans) may be used, many guests choose to begin their adventure from the main international airport in San Jose (SJO) thus allowing them to see the varied landscape on the way down. The drive down to the villa is 3 hours, not including how many times you stop to take in the awesome views en route. Flying Toucans is six miles south of Dominical on a perfect road. If you can ever pull yourself away from the villa and view you will find abundant choices of dining, shopping, and activities close by.
Other Activities: Ziplines, nature treks, kayaking tours, white water rafting, atv tours
Golf: Besides the new golf course there's LOTS to do around here: Bird and animal watching, surfing, swimming, beach-combing, hiking, horseback tours to beaches and waterfalls, zip lines, day trips to Quepos and Manuel Antonio National Park, butterfly farm, serpentaria (snake exhibition), ultra-light flightseeing tours, sport fishing.
About an hour north of us is Quepos (Manuel Antonio National Park). The casual village of Dominical offers international and local style dining, a bank/ATM, a bakery, small grocery stores, an English-speaking doctor and dentist, pharmacy, real estate offices, souvenir shops, internet cafe, surfboard rentals and visitor information and booking services for local activities. A 2-minute walk from the villa is a small and beautiful European hotel with fine dining and full spa services. The villages of Uvita and Bahia, 6 miles south, offer internet, shops, restaurants, beaches, boat tours, a butterfly farm and the lovely Ballena National Park, home of the 'Whale Tail' (as is seen from Flying Toucans). Obviously absent from our corner of the world are large numbers of tourists, suits/ties/pantyhose and traffic lights... come see for yourself!
