Centro House Rental Photos and Description

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps up to 7)

If you are looking for an elegant and luxurious home in the best location of the historic Centro of Merida at reasonable rents, one block from Parque Santiago, Casa de los Monos is it! On the corner of Calle 57 and Calle 74, this home is in Colonia Santiago, the best residential area in the city. Casa de los Monos is not a 'rental house.' Rather it is a private, historic residence which is occasionally available to a few, responsible people for extended stays. Therefore, the furnishings, linens, art, and appointments are commensurate with what you expect to find in a private, luxury home.

The main floor living room has glass doors opening onto the pool. At one end you will find a beautiful tiled and fully equipped kitchen (with powder room) which opens to a lovely dining room with comfortable seating for 8. The other end of the living room opens to a large guest room with two double beds. The elegant and comfortable master bedroom has a queen size bed and opens onto a glassed in sitting room/office going out to the pool. A huge marble bathroom/dressing room connects the two main floor bedrooms. On the second floor is the third bedroom, beautifully decorated with a queen size bed and full bathroom. A balcony overlooks the pool.

Two of the greatest Mayan pyramids (Chichen Itza and Uxmal) are within a two hour drive. Cancun and Guatemala are just 4.5 hours away. The lovely beach of Progreso with its beautiful new Malecon is only a 30 minute drive from Merida and our favorite "secluded" beach town of Sisal is an hour away. Enjoy symphonies, ballets, theater, fine dining, incredible museums, galleries, modern movie theaters, and so much more in this beautiful 'White City' that looks like Paris. Taxis are very reasonable, and the shopping is superb..

The large exercise lap pool has fountains which flow into it, and the lighting at night is magical. The second floor bedroom will comfortably sleep two in a queen size bed. The other two bedrooms downstairs offer a queen size bed in one and two double beds in the other. All the downstairs rooms enjoy large glass windows and doors facing the pool. The ceilings are 18 feet high. The entire building has separate air conditioning in each room.

Come and enjoy one of the most beautiful areas you can imagine, as you relax in a lovely, historical home; enjoy the pool; relax to the music of the built-in stereo sound system; and explore World Heritage sites.

Weekly maid service included. Of significant importance, Merida has the lowest crime rate in Mexico. A strong police presence is everywhere. This is a very safe and friendly city.

Wonderful stay in a gorgeous home!

  • 5 of 5

Casa de Los Monos was even more beautiful than in the photos and the location near Santiago Park couldn't have been better. We were an international team of four researchers working in Merida and were all delighted with the house. The property managers Lillian and Art were very helpful getting us settled and answering any questions. The tasteful decor and high quality renovation of this historic house made it a luxurious home base.

Perfect home and location!

  • 5 of 5

The only excuse I can come up with for taking so long to write this review is I wanted to keep this magical house a secret. I need to be fair to the fabulous owner and staff, so here goes: My husband and I stayed at Casa de Los Monos From January thru April 2015 and it is perfect…the house, the pool, the location… From the first morning we woke up (after arriving very late the night before), we were enchanted. Even though Casa de Los Monos is centrally located right in the middle of my favorite downtown neighborhood, Santiago,it is secluded, quiet and full of tranquil, historical energy. The pool is extremely long and great for REAL swimming, unusual for a house in Mérida. This is our sixth rental home in Mérida and by far the most comfortable. We plan (and hope!) to rent this house every winter for many years!

I have “test driven” several neighborhoods in Mérida and Parque de Santiago is by far my favorite mercado for veggies, tortillas, flowers and made to order lunches! It also has the best Sopa de Lima in town…we got two orders to go at least twice a week for three months. The house is one block from this excellent mercado. It is very walkable to El Centro, as well, and there are always plenty of taxis close by. The only complaint I have is it was perhaps too convenient, so I did’t explore as much as I have in past years. The biggest challenge while staying in Casa de Los Monos is making yourself LEAVE the house and experience Mérida.

Because my husband worked full-time while we lived there and I set up a small sewing room, the size of the house was wonderful. We had plenty of room for an office, a work room and guests. The completely separate guest suite gives everyone complete privacy and independence. We both love to cook while we are in Mérida and the kitchen is fantastic for a group or just two….plenty of everything you need!

The property manager was very responsive and the lovely couple who clean and take care of the pool and garden were excellent and very patient with my pitiful Spanish!

You won’t find a better rental in Mérida. Case de Los Monos is very special.

authentic Merida!

  • 5 of 5

We found the home very comfortable and found the living areas quite spacious and comfortable! We had one issue with air conditioning in the master bedroom the first night, but Mayelly was very helpful and repair was handled early morning. Having a fully equipped kitchen came in handy, as did the washer and dryer.

There is a little market around the corner for last minute needs...that came in handy also.

All in all, "Casa de Los Monos" is a lovely home and It felt like Merida for me. I have been. Coming here to visit family all my life, (I am in my 50's, and ny father was born here.) I love the Architecture not to mention the signature tile floors! If you want to experience Merida, why stay in a hotel room when you can stay in an authentic home?

The house itself was the best part of Merida

  • 5 of 5

The house was everything it advertised, the photos were accurate, and everything the other reviewers have said is entirely accurate, so I need not repeat all of their superlatives. My son-in-law is an architect, as a Mexican very knowledgable about this era of architecture, and he was really impressed with the authenticity of the restoration of the house and everything about it. We were a family group, including two small boys and grandparents on both sides, so were a bit concerned about the museum qualities of the house - however it wasn't a problem as the art was hung on the walls or otherwise out of reach. This also meant that the pool was a significant feature. It was fabulous, water the perfect temperature, and since the pool guy was scheduled the morning of our first day there, we knew it was in tip-top shape. Since it was 100 degrees outside most of our days in Merida, it proved welcome relief and many hours were spent in the pool. From the photos it looked like a lap pool, but was really a nice size for our group, and we much preferred it to the condominium pool in Playa del Carmen that we went to after Merida. Don't be put off by the apparent size in the photos. Maintenance and response to problems is always a concern, and again we were pleased. One of the air conditioners quit our first night, we called and left a message at 9:00 p.m., and the next day by noon a repair crew was there, and after ordering parts, it was running by supper time - a excellent response time. It should be noted that there are 6 ceiling air conditioners, adequate in 100 degree heat, but older, inefficient & expensive to operate, and the renter pays the electric bill at 2.8 peso/kilowatt. We used 755 kW in 5 days (we did the meter reading) We had an email conversation with the owner about this, and they are aware of the consumption, and plan to modernize the units and hopefully install solar panels. Living in this house was worth this extra expense, but until the upgrades occur, use AC wisely or at least know the cost.

Wonderful place!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed two weeks in this wonderful house. The owners were so easy to work with, helpful and accommodating. I have rented often through VRBO and have never been so fully prepared before an arrival, an info booklet even came by email! We had several locals who visited our house and they were amazed with it's appearance. The location is great, within walking distance of several squares and main plaza. A grocery store and Mercado very close. Thank god for the A/C as we gringos really needed it! Nicely stocked kitchen and even an "essentials kit" if you forgot something. Another couple was traveling with us and they stayed upstairs in what we called the "love nest". Great communication with Lucia, once we arrived in Merida. Some minor A/C problems which were taken care of within hours. Yes, I would stay there again.
