About the property

Cabin, 1 Bedroom + Loft, 2 Bath, (Sleeps 9)

Get away from the highway! Silver Willows "Sarva" cabin is located on the south side of Soda Butte Creek on four acres, getting you away from the traffic that runs through town. It features many of the comforts of home with a mix of rustic charm, and is a great home base for visitors to Yellowstone and the Beartooth Wilderness.

**New Additions in 2017 and 2016:**

- We've updated a number of amenities and accessories in the kitchen for the peak 2017 season!

- A travel crib/bassinet is now available upon request for travelers with babies and infants. Please request this item when you book.

- Our sister cabin, "Ursa" (the Bear, VRBO #929453), is now available for rent on the property. Ursa is perfect for smaller groups, or you can rent both cabins. A stand of trees separates the cabins on the property, maintaining privacy for our guests.

- New twin bunk beds, new full futon, dresser and privacy screens added to the loft, allowing for better bedding and accommodation for larger groups!

- More trailer parking added for snowmobilers.

This cabin is named for Sarva, the moose constellation of the Sami people, and is located on the western, wooded half of a 4 acre property.

This cabin is found in the small town of Silver Gate, Montana, 1 mile outside of Yellowstone National Park’s northeast entrance and 3 miles down the road from Cooke City. The Silver Gate/Cooke City area is popular with wolf watchers (the Lamar Valley is a short drive away!) and park visitors looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the larger border towns, as well as winter sports enthusiasts who come to take advantage of the recreation opportunities in the Beartooth Mountains.

Silver Willows is situated away from the highway on 4 acres of woodland bordered by Soda Butte Creek, which runs through the property on its way into Yellowstone National Park. The cabin sleeps up to 9 people on two queen sized beds (1 in the master, 1 in the loft) plus a queen sleeper sofa and twin bunk beds, all with memory foam mattresses. There is also a full sized futon.

Whether you want to enjoy the wonders of Yellowstone, a quiet picnic at the creek or a snowmobile ride in winter, Silver Willows is the perfect getaway.

About Max and Jenn

Jenn and Max are based in Seattle, but were annual visitors to Yellowstone for many years before choosing to build a cabin near the park. Max's work as a nature photographer drew him to the natural wonders of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, and the cabin was "a really good excuse to visit more often."

Max and Jenn purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Max and Jenn chose Montana

We were very fortunate to find a property that was so close to the park, is filled with trees, has mountain views and even has Soda Butte Creek running through it on the way to the park. It really felt like being in Yellowstone despite technically being outside the park boundary. Seeing moose grazing in our willows or spying one of the town foxes hunting in the meadow really makes us feel at home in nature. Even when we're tucked inside, we're constantly peeking out the window to see if any of our wild neighbors have come by to say hello.

What makes this cabin unique

The cabin is in a great spot. Positioned on the opposite side of the creek from the highway, our guests are able to enjoy a fair bit of peace and quiet. During winter, visitors can ski out from the cabin, or ride their snowmobiles onto the Bannock Trail up to Cooke City and the backcountry. With so much of the property growing wild, we love going for peaceful walks along the creek, brushing past the moose's favorite willows and walking beneath the pine trees as woodpeckers tap away and squirrels gather food.

Beautiful cabin in a lovely setting!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in this cabin a few times over the last couple years or so. The owners always keep the cabin well maintained and clean. We have always stayed in the Sarva cabin, but the new cabin (Ursa) looks like a nice cabin as well. This is one of the nicest and more private cabins for rent in Silver Gate. We have only stayed in the winter and fall, not the busy Yellowstone tourist season, and most of the cabins around this property are shut during those times. We haven't yet stayed in Sarva while other guests have been in Ursa, but that cabin is at the other end of the property allowing both cabins to have a private setting.

The location is great for access to North East Yellowstone and the Beartooth Plateau. For skiers/snow snowshoers that are concerned about snowmobile use in winter, we've always found Silvergate to be quiet in the winter with most snowmobile use in Cooke City. Winter access to the park is great as it's only a short drive to the Northeast Ski trails and even Lamar Valley and Blacktail Deer Plateau are not a long drive away. You can even ski/snowshoe right from the cabin along the Bannock/Warm Springs trail which enters the Abasaroka Beartooth Wilderness right behind the cabin and continues into Yellowstone. We actually prefer staying here vs. Mammoth Hot Springs in the winter since it's quieter than being in the lodge and the skiing is better on this end of the park.

Soda Butte creek runs through the property and there is good fishing right out the door. We have seen lots of wildlife on the property as well including red fox and even a bison. Of course there are always bears around (except dead of winter) so keep your head on a swivel as the owners always tell us.

The cabin comes with all the nice amenities; comfortable beds, couches, chairs; nice dining table and chairs, a cozy gas stove/fire place that heats the cabin nicely, and on demand hot water so you don't run out. There are always plenty of towels supplied and extra blankets, plus all the kitchen appliances, satellite TV, and internet are always working. You can tell the owners take pride in this cabin and want to provide a nice experience for their renters. This cabin has become on of our favorites and we highly recommend it.

Sarva is the best!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at this cabin several times over a 4 year period. And, it is still as new and well maintained as it was the first time we visited. Everything is kept clean and well maintained. A new microwave had just been installed before we arrived for our latest visit. You can't go wrong with Sarva, and the new cabin (Ursa) is very attractive.

It is an easy ride into the Park, but you can often see wildlife from Sarva. This time we saw a cow moose, bison and a fox from the Cabin. In the Park, the wolves were out as were otters, bison, elk, eagles, coyote and fox. We had one "3 dog day" - fox, coyote and wolves all see in a single day. Winter is a great time to visit.

Perfect Retreat!

  • 5 of 5

The Sarva cabin at Silver Gate is the perfect retreat for cold snowy days in the Yellowstone area. The setting along the small stream running just yards away from the cabin with the mountain view in the background was outstanding. We had light snow each morning we were there and it was so peaceful and serene watching the snow through the very large windows throughout the cabin. The gas fire kept the cabin very cozy. The cabin is everything others have described. Large open plan; nicely decorated; fully functional kitchen; all the conveniences one usually has at home. Though we were only 4 adults, the cabin could easily accommodate 8 - 10.

We spotted a bull moose and several bison within a half mile of the cabin and understand from others there can be sightings on the property. There are snow-mobiles available just 3 miles away in Cook CIty. This is definitely a place we will return to so that we can experience it in other seasons. It is truly exceptional.

Perfect Cabin!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great experience staying at the Sarva Cabin. This property is a diamond in the rough for the area and is everything we could have hoped for. From the minute we arrived, it was clear Max and Jenn had put a lot of time, thoughtfulness and love into this property. This cabin is up to date and modern yet maintains its rustic and cozy feel. The rooms are spacious and airy; there was more than enough space for our family of four.

Although we spent most of our time in Yellowstone National Park (which is only about one mile away!) we looked forward to our return back to the cabin each evening where we played games, read and relaxed. Our five year old daughter particularly enjoyed reading the complete set of classic Disney stories which are part of an extensive library of books, games and DVD's.

The kitchen is modern and equipped with all the appliances and accessories anyone could hope for. We enjoyed cooking breakfast and dinner each day. And the washer and dryer were so useful traveling with two young children.

I could not give this cabin a high enough rating. Sarva Cabin really is a home away from home.

Best ever cabin

  • 5 of 5

We stayed two weeks in September. Sarva is a beautiful cabin, spacious, well designed, functional, spotlessly clean in a dramatic or pretty setting depending on the weather. Everything works, the tiled, open plan indoor porch area is well equipped with plenty of pegs and benches to ease daily organisation of outdoor stuff. Apart from the kitchen and bathrooms, the rest of the cabin is carpeted in a hardwearing attractive weave that I have photographed to find similar at home in the UK. Wide stairs lead to a serene space with generous landings where you can go for a walk, or sleep. Sometimes the rain beats down, reverberates through the house and makes you even more snuggly. Great kitchen, loads of equipment, except eggcups which I think is a USA thing. Great laundry area and bathrooms, though upstairs shower is a bit fierce. And outside there is your own bison and mule deer. We loved every minute and highly recommend Sarva.
