Perfect base for a successful summit!

  • 5 of 5

We were searching for an alternative to a bunkhouse for our climbing foursome, and we hit it out of the park by picking Paul's retreat! It is so convenient to Ashford center, and only a 10 minute drive from our guide's headquarters. Multiple bedrooms and bathrooms made the logistics of packing gear and getting out the door in the morning that much easier, and we really enjoyed having the fully equipped kitchen to cook some tasty meals and adequately fuel. The ability to do laundry is an added bonus, if not just to dry your gear after snow school on the mountain. The impressive library of movies and hot tub also kept us relaxed and distracted from the hard work ahead, as did checking out the deer that gathered across the street at dusk. Everything inside the cabin was clean and incredibly well stocked.

The owner Paul is truly a gem. Definitely take him up on his offer to show you all of his beautifully crafted furniture pieces - each has a story and is incredibly unique. He even brought us a great tyvek sign to display at the summit (which we did!), and made a fantastic birthday card for one of our party who happened to be turning 30. We hope Paul also had a wonderful birthday that week! We will never forget our stay at Stargazer Retreat (aptly named after the beautiful garden full of lilies) and hope to come back.

A Climber's Paradise!!

  • 5 of 5

"A climber's paradise! If you're in town making an attempt on Mt. Rainier, this is the place for you. From the location close to both major mountain guiding centers, to the spacious rooms for organizing and packing gear, to the hot tub for your post-climb relaxation, the Stargazer retreat is definitely the place to stay. The home was clean, cozy, and comfortable and stacked to the brim with amenities (fully stocked kitchen, toiletries including shampoo and body wash, and electric fireplace). Outside of the home is a beautiful backyard with a natural stream that provides a great place to relax and soak in nature without having to even leave home.

But perhaps better than all of this was the host! Paul is a local legend and one of the nicest people I've ever met. He made us a homemade cheesecake, one of the best I've ever had, wishing us a safe summit! Paul built the house and most of the furniture inside himself and his craftsmanship is remarkable. If only our climb had ended in as much success as our stay! Couldn't recommend this place enough."

The cabin was comfortable and clean. It was spacious and the property is lovely. We turned off the cell phones and put away the Nintendos. We left the laptop, ipad, and itouch at home. We didn't have Wi-Fi, and we didn't miss it. In the evening we sat in the hot tub and listened to the frogs croaking down by the creek. It was wonderful to unplug and spend some quality time together. We had a great time hiking at Mt Rainer. We will definitely be back!

Wonderful Family Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and our 2.5 yo son were lucky enough to find this place for a relaxing getaway from Seattle. The cabin was very clean and extremely comfortable. Everything we could have needed was provided including lawn chairs for relaxing in the huge yard and a fire pit to roast some smores. Great location for access to Mt Rainier National Park and the local restaurants. Enjoyed the very short walk to the nearby water access in the community where our son was able to splash around in the heat of the afternoon. Can't wait to come back with some friends.

Wonderful Cabin and Owner!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at the Stargazer for our 32nd Anniversary. We absolutely loved our weekend here! I must say, what makes this cabin so special, besides of course the wonderful amenities is Paul the owner. He is such a helpful, kind, funny man we really could have spent hours just chatting with him! Of course the delicious cheesecake he made for us in honour of our anniversary was a tick in the plus column for him! Paul has made this a very easy place to stay whether you wish to let it for a weekend or for a longer stay. The cabin is stocked with everything you would need, a fully equipped kitchen, several fluffy towels, very soft bedding and extremely comfortable (at least for us) beds. There are so many videos there is something for everything to watch on a huge flat screen television as well as many board games. There is a washer and a dryer, BBQ, hot tub, fire pit, fishing poles to take to the private lake just a short stroll from the cabin, folding chairs for outdoors. Really Paul has thought of everything you will need for a home away from home. The furniture, while not just off the showroom floor, is all plentiful and quite comfortable. Take note of all the wooden details throughout, Paul is quite an accomplished craftsman.

Paul called us a few days before we arrived to give us a few instructions and to be sure we had the directions to the property and what to do upon arrival. He requested an ETA so he could come to meet us when we got there. This was very helpful since he built the cabin! He gave us a tour throughout the property as well as what to do in the area, places to eat, attractions, etc. Following Paul's information we ate at Wild Berry. This was a wonderful choice! They have two menus, one traditional American food whilst the other menu is listed as Sherpa. We both had curry dishes which we love, these were delicious and a great deal of food! The service of was very quick. We ate one lunch and one breakfast at Copper Creek, both meals were good but really nothing to write home about, again typical American type selections. This establishment was always quite busy so perhaps it may be best to eat earlier or later than typical meal times. The service is agonizingly slow so plan accordingly if you have plans to be somewhere after your meal. If you get the chance go back down the road a wee bit and go to the Mt. Rainier Train Ride & Museum. Highly enjoyable! We enjoyed our stay at the Stargazer immensely!!!

huge two-bedroom house

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 2 nights at the property. It is a house with lots of amazing details that made the house very unique and pretty. Each of the two bedrooms has a sitting area, which would make it very comfortable for two couples or a big family to stay. The property is also very close to the park entrance. We enjoyed the quiet environment and the flowers in the yard. Paul did a great job maintaining a beautiful house. Also, I must say that the bedding is truly of very high quality. I never stayed at any other VRBO properties that had better bedding.

I'd like to mention three more things, to me, they are not negatives, just want to provide tips for future explorers: (1) there is no wifi or cellphone signal in the house, if due to the characteristics of your work, you must be connected all the time, you might need to reconsider. For everyone else, we can just go to the local stores or restaurants to get wifi. (2) the stairs to second floor bedrooms might be a little steep for some seniors, need to pay attention especially coming downstairs. (3) If you plan to cook or BBQ, better bring your food in from cities on your way, the Ashford town center only has grocery stores similar to 7-11.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your great review! Especially your comments about the bedding. During the warmer months the sheets and cases are egyptian cotton- 600 stitch count or better and during the winter months they are true flannel fabric. In regards to the WIFI or cell phone connectivity, presently there is no cell phone service available in the Ashford area. In some cases depending on the cell provider some guests can pick up service. Verizon has obtained permits to construct a new cell tower here in Ashford, as we are hoping to have service in 2016. As for the tip regarding grocery stores, there are large, full service grocery stores located in Eatonville, Morton and Packwood. Each approx. 30 minutes away. Thank you again and we hope you stay with us in the future!
