This house is definitely the most fittingly furnished, generously supplied, and appropriately decorated of the four houses we have visited previously. Our three-generation family of fourteen easily found places to sleep that pleased each. A major plus was the table that seated fifteen. Unbelievably, all of us managed to sit down at the same time for dinner and playing Uno (the cards were there) around that table was a stitch. The paddle boat and one-man kayak were put to good use and we rented a paddle board for a day. The swimming was fine and much better than when we visited the same house eight years ago. We also appreciated the addition of wi-fi and the substantial improvements to the annex.
We had a great time and this house was the perfect venue for our first Family Vacation . We had 20+ people ranging from 1-75 years of age throughout the week and we never felt like we were on top of each other. The house is better than what is on this site and worth every penny. They have towels, comfortable beds, huge laundry mud room, every pot/pan and cooking utensil you might need. The front yard is huge we had the kids playing baseball and running around while we sat on the porch and swing outside. We played bags on the front lawn and over by boat house then we would build fires in evening and make s’mores. There is a play room under the stair that the little ones loved and is stocked with toys. We ate at the huge table in dining room and then turned it into game central. They have games, movies everything you would have at home.
The boat house and beach area is amazing. A lot of land that a family can really use. They have a dock and we rented a pontoon boat and tube from JD motor Sports. They were so helpful and best prices we found in the area.
One tip: there is a limited number of double/queen beds and if you have a lot of couples that want to sleep in same bed you will run into some issues. Luckily my family is flexible : )
Verne and Nanci are a pleasure to work with you couldn't ask for better owners to rent from! We will be returning next year for sure!!
Our group of 22, from age 5 to 75, thoroughly enjoyed this property from August 8 to August 15, 2010. We found it to be clean and perfectly equipped for our varied needs. The beach, the beachhouse, and the dock were all in good shape. The lake completely met our hopes, providing waterskiing, swimming, fishing and cruising opportunities. We were particularly pleased that the size of the lake (about 170 acres) allowed us to teach the little ones about waterskiing without the usual worry of big powerboats roaring by. The fishing was great, particularly just before dark. The kids caught a ton of fish off the dock. There is a sporting goods store within easy walking distance for licenses and gear. We met the owners and family, and we found them to be friendly, responsive, and absolutely honest. The air conditioning worked great. The large gas grill is located on the rear deck, and was in perfect condition. The road between the house and the lake presented no problem for us. Only a few cars drove by, and speeding was not an issue. The kitchen was completely equipped with everything we needed. The dishwasher, the fridge and the stove all were clean and worked perfectly. When we had a motor problem (with our boat) we found three marine parts and repair shops very close by. We were able to purchase parts and were back in business within very quickly. There's another thing we were happy about, and it's the fact that the neighbors were very friendly and helpful.
We vacationed here with our extended family in August of 2010. There were 23 people and the house accomodated us well. The kitchen was well equipped and there were plenty of sheets and towels. The beach area was great and all the kids in our group enjoyed swimming there. The house is under new ownership and all of the previous criticisms appear to have been addressed. We found the house to be well maintained (it is an older home) and we enjoyed our stay. The only criticisms I have is that the water pressure and showers weren't great. In addition, the house is not very sound proof. The house is not on the lake but the private beach is directly across the street. This was not an issue for our group.
Huge home accomodated all wants/needs for our group of 14, newborn up to 70+. New owners a pleasure to deal with. Clean well kept home -- obviously caring for and upgrading home.
Back "wing" has sink, fridge, bathroom and three bedrooms that can be closed off. (No A/C back there, we opened windows and used fans - it was fine.) Layout allows quiet spot, great for naps - we brought a baby monitor, (which transmits to the beach.)
Kids especially LOVED the "secret" playroom under stairs. Fenced in back yard, mostly fenced in front yard. Baby gates supplied to keep toddler at bay.
Every time we turned around we found what we needed for our family. Booster chairs, high chairs, toys, baby gates, children's picnic table. (ONLY thing we missed were stools to brush teeth and turn on bathroom lights for the preschoolers!) And we just used a chair. Front of 2nd story is HUGE master bedroom W/fireplace. (FP not used in summer) Most bedrooms large.
GREAT kitchen - well stocked. Great decks and screened in porch.
Private beach and beach house - wonderful. Swim dock. We used the paddle boat supplied and brought two jet skis. We also rented a boat locally for two days. (Tad expensive, but not bad if several families split the cost.) Lake is clean and clear and very warm. It was not crowded at all while we were there. We went out in the evening and took a quiet "boat stroll."
Took our bikes and did some riding. There is a park nearby that is supposed to have about 9 miles of trails, but honestly, we never made it there!
We did Farmer's Markets and ate at Cap'n Jacks one night. St. Joe(crowded and touristy - but fun day outing.) is less than a half hour away. We stopped at Warren Dunes on our way home and enjoyed a day on the beach there as well.
If you want TONS to do and need to be entertained w/lots of shopping and such this is not for you. Small local grocery and a few stores. We had all we needed and wanted right at the house. Swim, boat, fish, firepit, yard games, gas grill, picnic tables, games, movies. Some did golf and said it was good.
Down sides? Only one bath tub and the house is older, so plumbing and such are not the greatest.
The lot is long and rather narrow, but we never felt crowded.
Road in front of the house? We had adults cross with the younger children anyhow ... didn't want them at the lake alone.
"Busy" street term is relative. One slow car every 45 seconds during busiest times. NO BIG DEAL.
My family and I just spent a week in this home. It accomodated 14 adults and 7 children. You have to cross a busy street to get to the beach and this home needs some TLC.
We are located on Dewey Lake in the city of Dowagiac Michigan. We are next to Magician Lake and part of the Sister Lakes. There are many fresh produce stands and a wine tour is just minutes away.
