Satinwood is solar powered; free from ties to the island's utilities. But you won't even notice that fact. The storage battery bank and backup generator provide reliable and earth-friendly energy for all the comforts of the finest rental homes available.

The unique design of Satinwood's energy and water system provides year-round comfort.

Even during times of periodic drought, the massive water collection area, huge cisterns, and use of Clivus Multrum composting toilet systems assure plenty of fresh, clean water for drinking, washing, and of course, relaxing in the cool swimming pool.

Each main level bedroom consists of one king size bed, complete bathroom, plus ladder accessible loft with two twin beds (suitable for ages 6 and up).

Outside on the sunny pool deck, lounge chairs, umbrella table, and gas barbecue grill make for the perfect vacation day or evening.

The lower level is a complete apartment with full bath, kitchen, and king size bed.

Awesome place to stay

This house is great and was perfect for the 7 of us that vacationed here! We are looking to come back with 5 in July this year and can't wait to hopefully stay here again! The view from the house is worth every penny! I would recommend this place to anyone! Everything was exactly as described when we arrived and was located on a nice private road away from it all but a quick jump in the car from cool breeze we rented and we were to town in no time.

He worst vacation house ever !!!

The description of this house is TOTALLY misleading !!! My husband and I arrived 2/29/16 an couldn't wait to leave. After a sleepless night we were blessed to find a different place to stay. We have been coming to STJ since 1985 and have never experienced a disaster as Satinwood. The house was dirty,smelly, dangerous, very old and definarely not worth the money. The appliances that did not work are... The gas grill, washer, dryer, safe and the pool was below the filtering level, causing mosquitoes. The furniture was old, smelly and dirty. The towels, you DO NOT want to use.. They are dirty and very stained with what knows. The toilets are smelly. They are a compost toilet, aka job Jonny. Everything about this house is a misrepresentation !!!! DO NOT RENT THIS HOUSE !!!!

Owner's Response: Much of this review is unfounded and incorrect. I am surprised by the overtly aggressive and abusive nature of the review. I wish this guest had given us the opportunity to address these issues.  Over the years, we have had many happy guests and many who return year after year.  Most of the concerns here could have been addressed by our first class property managers.  There are a few things that have been taken care of immediately and others will be resolved shortly.   Cleanliness is paramount and we have always taken pride in the quality and attentiveness of the St. John team caring for Satinwood.   We have replaced the towels again, as is our custom, added water to the pool daily, as usual, and are revisiting a few other slightly worn items. Satinwood is our family vacation home.  It is comfortable, bright, airy and wondrous.  We take pride in sharing it with our guests and showing how eco-design and living can provide a wonderful vacation experience.

A very good place at a very good price!

Satinwood is a very nice, comfortable place with a fantastic view! There is plenty of space, the kitchen is very well-equipped, beds are comfortable, the pool is a joy, and the breezes are great. It may not be as polished as more expensive places, but it was a very good deal for the money. We appreciated the fact that the house had some green characteristics. The owner and property managers were most helpful and responsive.

The few improvements I would suggest would be to fix the screens (there were some holes and loose screens, though maybe trying to avoid mosquitos is impossible), and make the guests aware of how to compost the toilets. There was some issue with odor from one of the composting toilets (maybe a fan in the composting system was not working?), and once we started putting some leaves in more regularly it was resolved. I want to stress that these were minor issues, and we all very much enjoyed our stay and would certainly recommend Satinwood.

Is it possible to have a bad experience on St. John??? Well, the answer is a very loud NO. But this is my particular perspective. I'd give 5 STARS to a hammock on the beach with a million mosquito bites on my body in this paradise which is the USVI's. In this case though, the house was just as expected and described. The ONLY critique I'd have for this property would be the no A/C issue, which leads to a degree of dampness (which you will feel in the linens, your clothing, etc.), however having a "green" house with backup power more than made up for it. I've been stuck on island many times without power, for extended periods of time. Being self sufficient, off the grid, was VERY NICE. The property management that runs Satinwood is TOP NOTCH and amazingly responsive and prompt with ANY requests or issues. Probably the MOST amazing and intriguing item this house offers is the flushless/green toilets. I am in "AWE" over this. I have spent plenty of time on boats, buses, planes, and very familiar with holding tanks and "smells". First bathroom/s I have ever experienced where you can have a gastrointestinal catastrophic explosion and the next person entering bathroom would NEVER have a clue. TOTALLY SMELL PROOF TOILETS. I am still in shock. I want one for home!!!!!!

Cannot go wrong with this property.

Owner's Response: When Satinwood guests use the term "awe" to describe their stay, it usually refers to the view ..... Satinwood's location was carefully selected and the villa was designed to be comfortable without air-conditioning. The villa faces the cool, prevailing breezes and has high ceilings and clerestories to allow those breezes to flow through and up the hill. Most guests find this refreshing and comfortable - even in mid-summer. Other locations and house designs probably make air-conditioning an absolute requirement. Satinwood's location high on a hill side also gives the villa an awesome view. Many of our guests have praised Satinwood's self-sufficiency and enjoyed having power when the grid was down. We do strive for water and power conservation practices - without unduly compromising comfort. Satinwood demonstrates how comfortably guests can enjoy the tropical paradise of St. John while using recycled products in building materials and conserving water and power. Have a wonderful island vacation!

Car: necessary

Satinwood's magnificent view is what keeps our guests returning. The view of Coral Bay, the east end of St. John and the British Virgin Islands is wonderful. The villa is close to the shops, restaurants and clubs of Coral Bay and the beaches are not a very long drive - it is a small island. Even the shopping and other amenities of Cruz Bay is only a short drive. Snorkel gear, ocean kayaks and other rental equipment is available in Coral Bay - or Cruz Bay. Sailing rentals are possible, bit should be coordinated before arrival through our on-island, expert property managers.

Satinwood is a modern green villa. We practice water conservation, advocate low power use and sustain the property with solar power (and a generator, just in case, because no one wants a power outage, which is common on the island, to interfere with their vacation). This does not mean we compromise on amenities. Satinwood has cable television, stereo, WiFi internet access, microwave ovens, full-sized kitchen appliances including a gas oven and stove, and more.

The three main bedrooms have the original Select Comfort firmness-adjustable, king beds. The rest of the beds are twin beds in lofts above the two main floor - the twin beds are also firmness-adjustable beds by Select Comfort.

The private pool is always a wonderful and relaxing way to finish a busy day, even if that day was at the beach. The deck is warm and private and a wonderful place for sun worshipers - just remember how warm the tropical sun can be!

Satinwood's location was very carefully selected. Our experience in the islands is long and we wanted to face the cool prevailing breezes and the carefully engineered design allows these breezes, freshened by the trees of the Coral Bay basin, to flow and through the house, exiting through high clerestories at the back. The result is an open, airy and year-round comfortable place without the need for air-conditioning. Many locations on the island absolutely do need air-conditioning. Satinwood simply does not.
