About Cleo Risser

My name is Cleo. I am the mother of 2 and currently live in Olympia, WA. I grew up in Lake Quinault and as an 18 year old, could not wait to leave. I attended college on the East coast near Boston, MA and found myself truly missing this beautiful place. I missed the trees, I missed the Pacific ocean beaches, I missed the stars, I missed the sound of the frogs at night and I even missed the ridiculous amounts of rain. I returned to Lake Quinault after college and shortly afterwards, married my best friend who shares my love for the area. We lived in the community for a few years operating his family's business. We moved to Olympia in 2002 to pursue our careers and are now only a 2 hour drive away from our vacation home.

Cleo Risser purchased this house in 1996

Why Cleo Risser chose Washington

My husband bought this property well before we built this home together. He recognized the unique beauty of this property sitting at the end of a dead end private drive with so many feet of private lake frontage. We built the home with the intent to live in the valley and operate his family's business. Our paths changed after a few years and we both opted to pursue different careers requiring a move to Olympia. My husband's parents moved into the home and slowly added on. They built the garage and apartment above, they added the spacious recreation room and the sunroom and the garage studio/exercise/game room. After we had our first baby, they retired and moved to Olympia to be near us. We feel grateful to be able to keep this beautiful home in our family while also providing the opportunity to share it with guests who also understand and appreciate the beauty of this unique area!. We visit this beautiful area as much as we can with our family; our two children and our dog love it!

What makes this house unique

The privacy of this property is second to none in the area. I cannot imagine finding another place like this....some of my favorite moments in life have been here...staying up all night laying on the lawn watching a meteor shower...listening to frogs while in the hot tub staring at the mountains across the lake....waking up and sitting with my coffee in the sunroom gazing at the picture perfect scene with a layer of fog reflecting in the lake like glass....sitting around a bonfire with my family and friends telling stories and laughing...teaching my kids to swim...watching the rain pour out of the sky like buckets as the lake level creeps up higher and higher and the electricity flickers during a fine winter storm while snuggled up inside with flashlights ready

Guestbook comments from the owner

All of the other rental properties in Quinault share beach access and are adjacent to other homes. This lovely home is the only one that offers complete privacy and seclusion.

Wonderful getaway

  • 5 of 5

We rented this house for about 5 days in late July. The house is clean and comfortable. The living room is spacious. It's a very quiet and private house which is what we needed. The hot tub was our favorite. We brought our dogs and they just loved the lake and couldn't get enough of it. When it was time to leave, one of our dogs wouldn't get into the car....he kept running back to the lake. The owners are great, too. We had a few questions before we left and they answered promptly.

Great house with stunning views in amazing location

  • 5 of 5

We rented this home for a week in the summer of 2014. Two families of five took a road trip from Southern California to the Pacific Northwest. We throughly enjoyed our stay in this nicely outfitted house. One family slept in the main house and the other slept in the studio apartment, but we spent most of our time in the beautiful and spacious main house. The views are spectacular, and we loved picking blackberries and watching the beavers in the pond on the property. We had amazing weather during our week and really enjoyed exploring the southern part of Olympic National Park. A drive to the coast with stops at Ruby Beach and Kalaloch is highly recommended, as is a visit to the Lake Quinault Lodge and grounds. There are several great little hikes right around the lake. Such a beautiful area and a wonderful property. Highly recommended!

Excellent Location and Accomodations

  • 5 of 5

We were pleasantly surprised at how nice the home and the surrounding grounds were. The views from the sunroom were just wonderful anytime of day. We were particularly impressed with the amount of baby gear they had in the home--two toddler beds, a pack n play, a high chair, an excersaucer, and tons of books and toys for all ages of babies (ours were 0-3). The common areas are plentiful and spacious which allowed us to spread out and have plenty of space to play, read, nap babies, and cook without being on top of each other.

The owners were friendly and very responsive. Our dogs were welcomed also, and it felt great knowing they were safe roaming outside in a secluded area. We were seven adults and four babies, so we rented the additional apartment over the garage, and we had plenty of room to spread out.

Beautiful location, but a few glitches

  • 3 of 5

This is a beautiful home on gorgeous, private property in an area with limited development. The views of the lake, mountains, and wildlife are spectacular - we saw otters, geese, loons, herons, rabbits, and deer; there are also many elk and beaver in the area, but we didn't see any. The main house is nice and offers several comfortable sitting areas that accomodate large groups. Sleeping areas aren't especially spacious, but the beds and futons are comfortable - beware of the sleeper sofa as most adults would have a hard time sleeping on the hide-a-bed. We also rented both additional units: the upstairs studio was fine for a private space for a family, but the downstairs studio was cramped and dark - the exercise equipment should be removed to make more space or to add a dresser or table.

Our experience with the owner was consistently positive. Cleo was responsive to our inquiries and helpful in providing informative answers to our questions prior to our arrival. She was also honest and forthright about a minor maintenance issue with one of the units so that we had no surprises when we arrived.

Despite her helpfulness, we did have a few issues during our stay. Upon arrival, the keys to one of the studio units was missing, leaving some of our group locked out for a few hours while I scrambled to make contact with Cleo, who in turn could not find someone in the vicinity who could help us. Eventually, Cleo gave me directions to find an extra key which opened the unit and was very apologetic for our inconvenience.

Other than several cobwebs in the large picture windows, the units were fairly clean. We had 14 people in our group and it would have been helpful to have a few more towels and plates/cups/glasses/silverware stocked in the kitchen; there were some extras in one of the studio units, but we didn't particularly want to drag all of those items over to the main house.

Our biggest frustration was that the oven kept tripping the breaker on the outlet in the kitchen. Even though it was fueled by gas, the oven and stovetop range shut off when the power supply was cut. We pulled the whole stove out of its slot in the counter to climb behind it to hit the outlet reset button 8-10 times, but got tired of having all to pull all of our hot pots and pans off the stove and out of the oven to move the appliance. We eventually gave up and did our cooking in one of the studios.

In all, we had a good weekend and enjoyed the beautiful setting.

never enough time...

  • 5 of 5

Excellent facility and outstanding property. 5 of us enjoyed a two night stay as the weather changed from summer to fall and the rains came in for the first rains of the season and we were treated to quite spectacular views that changed constantly our entire time there. The cove and the basically untouched lake backed by hills are about as serene as it gets. The house itself is expansive, extremely comfortable (we were quite happy to use the fireplace one evening), well appointed, and well maintained and considerably private in setting. The owners are extremely easy to work with and very pleasant people. The time to leave comes upon you much too quickly when you stay in places like this...that is why we are planning a longer stay in the not too distant future...

Soooooooo Great

  • 5 of 5

We rented the main house and upstairs apartment for 4 days. The property is beautiful. I could sit on the deck and look at the lake for hours and hours. It is very secluded and exactly what we were looking for. Hot tub was a bonus. The house was well kept and well stocked for cooking. The direct tv was not working while we were there and I was so glad because we didn't have to listen to the tv ever! It was just the peaceful sounds of nature. There was wifi available if you had to stay in touch with the real world. The sun room is a beautiful place to sit and read and look out the huge windows at the lake. We did a lot of hiking while visiting the area and the house was central to most of the areas we wanted to get to around Lake Quinault and the coast. I recommend the Salmon House restaurant across the lake. Really delicious! All in all a wonderful house and I highly recommend it.
