About Keith Janssen & Claudia Anderson
The 32 acre parcel on which Perchasta Cottage came into the possession of the Janssen family in 1969 when Jacob and Helen Janssen purchased it as a weekend getaway for their young family. When the property was purchased by the Janssen’s it was a working apple orchard and they intended to keep it as such, but a series of unexpected, job-related moves ( two overseas) made it difficult to operate and maintain the orchard. Gradually, native hardwoods have overtaken the original apple trees and today approximately 27 acres of the property are populated by 30-40 year-old black cherry, black walnut, and hackberry trees, among others. Keith returned to graduate from Shepherd College, now University, before again venturing across the country and overseas with both the Army and Coast Guard. The property passed fully into the hands of the Janssen’s son, Keith, and his wife, Tari, in 2001. They moved to Shepherdstown and made it their permanent home in 2007 when Keith retired from active duty with the US Coast Guard. Under their stewardship the property became a managed timberland through the West Virginia Division of Forestry and has also met the criteria to become an American Tree Farm. Perchasta Farm is also designated as a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. Tari unexpectedly passed away in 2014 and the Cottage rental became temporarily unavailable. Keith has recently renewed and continued these efforts with his partner Claudia.

Perchasta is so sweet, cozy and perfectly decorated. The property is beautiful. Our host was attentive and so very helpful when I had questions. We didn’t experience a single problem. We had such a wonderful stay. Thank you!!
This cottage is lovely! It is as described online, close proximity to Shepherdstown, Harpers Ferry, Antietam, etc. , and furnishings are modern and extremely clean. Claudia was a delight as was the new puppy. Thank you for the welcoming gift -honey! A warm, thoughtful treat. The Gray’s and the Smith’s!
Perfect in every way. The location was so close to Shepherd University, allowing us to easily visit with our daughter; and just a short drive from Harper’s Ferry and Antietam.
We didn’t communicate with our hosts while on site, because there was no need. We breezed through check in, and we’re greeted with a lovely note and a fresh jar of honey. The cottage was exquisitely decorated and exceptionally clean. We observed hummingbirds and deer from the deck.
We will certainly return to this cottage each time we visit.
Beautiful Cottage on a Great Property
The small cottage house was ideal for our small family of four in every way, truly a home away from home. And, the property owners were more than welcoming, accessible and wonderfully hospitable.
This was the most charming cottage and beautiful setting we have experienced. The cottage was perfectly decorated and the owners thought of everything for our stay. Due to its proximity to one of our favorite towns, Shepherdstown, it made for an easy drive to enjoy the town and visit family nearby. My daughter and her boyfriend joined us which made for a comfortable visit and opportunity to catch-up over coffee or wine on the deck as we watched the sunset or the morning sounds of bird song! The grounds were lovely and we did make our way out for a stroll and a pick of wildflowers. This VRBO is lovely, the owners welcome note and goodies were just the most thoughtful touch. We would certainly recommend this property to anyone and we would love to come back.
Great place to stay would highly recommend it. Only thing we didn’t like was that the second bathroom was downstairs in the garage
