Shadowbrook, built in 1927 and lovingly maintained and enhanced over the years, for the first time is available to the public for vacation rental. On a level acre, the graceful “cabin” looks over Strawberry Creek, as does the Jacuzzi redwood hot tub. Lupines and rare tiger lilies grace the forest garden in summer. The interior is warmed by virgin redwood walls and its exterior is cedar bark above river-washed boulders. While its style is in the tradition of an old-fashioned Adirondack cottage, it has central heating, a modern kitchen, outdoor shower, and three fireplaces for ultimate comfort. Walk to town along the creek, sit in the sunroom filled with the Strawberry Creek’s music, have breakfast on the deck, and you’ll know why Shadowbrook has only had three previous owners.

For thirty five years, we've enjoyed Shadowbrook in all seasons. We look forward to tiger lilies in July, flocked trees in winter, and lupines in the spring. The nights are dark and clear for star gazing and the creek provides its music day and night. I've written twenty books in the house, so it's also a place of great inspiration.
Fernando Alvarez purchased this cabin in 1970
The first time we discovered Idyllwild, we had come up the Hill for dinner at a new restaurant. Although it was called the Chef in the Forest, we were surprised and delighted by the beauty of the little village. We went back up a year later and have loved the town and our home ever since.
We have horseshoes and badminton, a hammock, books, and sunshine most of the time. Lighting a fire in our giant fireplace with a glass of wine, a novel, and Beethoven is our idea of a good time in winter. Aroma, the restaurant right across the creek from us, has great food with live music to match.
"We loved the proximity of the property to the creek and the very private wooded lot. We walked to Aroma Cafe for breakfast. The house was very comfortable and charming. The cabin decor was impeccable, and outside deck areas inviting. I will definitely rent again.
I can't say enough great things about our stay. The house is beautiful and roomy and much more impressive than the pictures. It has every amenity you would want, yet still has a cozy, rustic feel. I can't wait to take my family back. We brought our baby with us and with some minor baby proofing he was free to roam the house. That being said, I have a few minor critiques. The knives in the kitchen were dull which made cooking more challenging than expected and the house is near a neighborhood restaurant that plays light music on their outdoor patio during the afternoons. It can be heard at the house. Again, these are small critiques, for such an amazing place. I can't wait to go back.
We stayed at this cabin for 4 days with 6 adults. Someone was there to meet us when we arrived to show us how everything worked. The location of the property is great - in the middle of the forrest, walking distance from downtown, and right on Strawberry Creek. The Cabin was very large, and beautiful (the photos don't do it justice), and there several distinct areas such as dining room, office, game room and several decks, a hammock, swings, and fenced-in area for dogs. You can hike directly from house into mountains. We came with senior citizens and teenagers, and there was something for everybody! We really loved it, and hope to come back.
The best place to stay for vacation at Idyllwild. I've been there with my family and we had fun. I was not expecting the house to be that big but it was so, loved it! Such a nice place.
When I arrived, I was so impressed with the space and layout of the home. Felt very cozy and welcoming. All of the bedrooms were great, but I loved the common areas the most. I also forgot my sunglasses there, and they were nice enough to send them back... So grateful! Thanks again Fernando!
We loved the place, from its location on the creek and close to town, to the historic feeling of the building and the redwood hot tub with a view of the creek. We stayed with three couples and two kids and it worked very well for us. Don't miss the opportunity to walk over to Cafe Aroma for music and great food. We would definitely love to go back.
This was such a great place to spend time with dear friends. It was bigger than we had expected (except for the coffee maker) and plenty of rooms to sneak away if you just wanted to read or take a nap. Of course we spent most of our time sitting around the living room enjoying each others company in front of the beautiful fireplace. There were gorgeous views from every room, with most looking out over the creek, but I think our favorite room for viewing was the game room. Very cozy, and easy to picture with a cup of hot cocoa as snow is falling. We all fit very comfortably, with many options for sleeping arrangements. There is a bonus room upstairs that is not mentioned on the website. The dining room table was also very accommodating and made it easy to serve from the cute little kitchen. We will definitely be planning another trip to Shadowbrook!
