Kim and I live and work in traverse city. We purchased the cottage in 2004 for an investment income property and also to use several times a year. We have enjoyed the property for years and hope our guests enjoy it as much as we do.
Frank & Kim Sturm purchased this cottage in 2004
We chose this property to buy because of its central location to all points of fun here in northern Michigan. Also because, while stores are just 15 minutes away, it has that in the middle of nowhere appeal.
If your a all seasons type of person this is the perfect property. For easy access to orv and snowmobile trails, golf hiking antiquing, and dining. Also close to several casinos. Small game and white tail hunting as well as fishing in starvation lake out back of the cottage or on any of the abundant lakes in the area.
Deer Hunting: Joe and his friends saw deer and liked the location and the cabin. They are thinking of comming back in July with their families.
Overall, the best part of the stay was looking down the lake at night. The cabin was ok and met our needs for the week. Unfortunately there were neighbors working on their cabins with saws and hammering to wake us up each morning and the delightful yelling and screaming from the Hideaway at 2:30 am was not considered an added bonus The cabin had 4 bedrooms although 2 of them were connected and the beds were uncomfortable and need to be replaced. The internet and cable tv were a real plus and the beach really was a highlight. Overall the place was clean and we were able to make ample use of the stove and full size refrigerator.
Great lake house wonderfully located near Traverse City, Sleeping Bear Dunes and Torch Lake. Perfect for family's who like swimming, fishing, camp fires, and exploring Northern Michigan. There are stairs from the house to the beach so a little difficult for very young children or elderly. Loon's and Eagles came by every day. The beach is very shallow and sanding great for kids. Wifi very weak and AT&T cell phones do not work due to the hills surrounding the lake. A beautiful place to relax and enjoy. We had a great time and enjoyed the location.
Being a retired USAF Officer with 6+combat tours of Iraq/Afghanistan we found the Cabin to be a Perfect get-away.It was quiet, clean, great beach ,great neighbors and an overall fantastic week. Thank you Frank for the opportunity and hope to return as much as we can. What a relaxing, fun week. I read the reviews before booking and the vast majority were great. The reviews that were less than excellent were due to the fact that you have to realize this is a cabin and not a 5 star hotel. Will gladly recommend to others.
We were very disappointed with our stay at the Starvation Lake cottage. The beach area was great. There was a nice size sandy beach and a good distance to play in the water without worrying about a drop off. We were very disappointed we could not use our boat on the lake because the dock was too short for the shallow water. Then there was the cleanliness of the cottage. The carpet was filthy and stained from the back door to the front door which then made us question the cleanliness of the cloth sofa’s and loveseat. The stairs down to the beach were so far off the ground with railing only on one side and tree limbs growing out into the walkway we felt made for a dangerous situation. While there were adequate paper supplies provided, the pots and pans were very limited and there were no lids that fit properly on any of the pans. The non-stick pans had the coating peeling off and could not be used. Upon arrival, we were notified by a note on the counter that the fire pit was no longer down by the lake but in front of the cottage and the row boat could not be used as it was leaking too much. We also learned upon arrival that the neighbors had heavy equipment in place as they were building a garage only 30 feet from the back door. While this beyond the owner’s control, it would have been nice to know about it in advance. We do not plan to return to Starvation Lake.
Our stay was fun and relaxing. Great view of the lake and the beach and water were excellent. However, I did not feel the property was adequetly stocked with the essentials for a family to stay for a week. We had to go buy toilet paper, dish soap, light bulbs, garbage bags, and some other items that you need to stay somewhere for a week. So that was frustrating. Also, would be nice if you could have a fire on the beach which was not allowed. However, a campfire is available near the road. Other than this, the property was nice and is great for the price. Owner was easy to work with and was quick to answer any questions. Would surely recommend it.
We cannot express how much we enjoyed our stay. Our family had such a wonderful time here at the cottage. If you are looking for privacy and some peace and quiet, this is the place for you. If you have the chance, the Hideaway bar and grill is a must. They have good food, good people and good times our family will remember for years to come! Thanks again for the hospitality!
