We have family photos taken in South Haven each year. Shown here is a sample of one of our 2011 photos taken on South Beach.
Jim Havlik purchased this house in 2005
We vacationed in South Haven for the first time in August of 2004. At that time, we had a family of 4, with a newborn and 1 year old. The town was so beautiful and kid-friendly that we knew we wanted to come back over and over. Since we are originally from Illinois and now live in the middle of Michigan, the South Haven location is a perfect meeting place for our family gatherings. We fell in love so quickly with the town that we purchased a 3 bedroom house in South Haven in November of 2004. We labored all winter to completely renovate the house into a 6 bedroom vacation home specifically designed for family reunions. We finished just in time for the summer of 2005 summer renters and the rest is history, with 100+ family reunions enjoyed at our homes!
We spent a week at the Sun House with my whole family - 10 adults and 4 kiddos. The house had plenty of room for everyone and was a really great fit for us! We loved that we could walk to the beach or to town in a matter of minutes. And you can't beat having a pool on top of that. Perfect place for large groups!
We loved staying at this home in Michigan. We like to consider it our home away from home in South Haven. There was not one thing we needed and didn't have available to us in this fully stocked and unbelievably clean home. All that is really needed are your clothes and toiletries. Don't forget your swimsuit as the heated pool is a wonderful convenience. The kids love playing in the fenced in backyard and on the new swingset, when not playing with the abundant amount of indoor and outdoor toys, or watching a DVD in the playroom.
The location is ideal, walk to town for doughnuts and coffee, or walk to the playground or beach. We love the shopping in town at the unique stores, too. The Havlik family have compiled a book of information about the town including restaurants and local sights. We enjoyed blueberry picking with our kids and eating homemade ice cream from Sherman's . We also enjoyed visiting the town of Saugatuck for lunch and shopping, which is not too far from South Haven.
If we had any questions or problems Mr. Havlik always responded quickly and was very helpful.
We are looking forward to our stay at the house again this summer. We really think we found a true gem and plan on returning year after year!
We have been coming to South Haven for the past 10 years and we have finally found the perfect house for our annual trip. We loved it so much that we have already requested our dates for next year! We rented this house with two other families. It was the perfect amount of room for all of us. The kids (& adults!) loved the pool and hot tub and all the toys that were available for them to use! The owner Jim was really easy to work with and everything went so smoothly. We cannot wait for next year! The location was great. Just a few blocks to the beach and to town. I highly recommend this rental property for your stay in South Haven.
Our extended family group included 4 adults and 8 children ranging from 6 months to 17 years old. Everyone had comfortable beds, and plenty of bathrooms. The pool and hot tub helped keep all the bigger kids busy, and the fenced yards were great spaces for the toddlers to play. Since the lake was still pretty cold in June, we had more pool time than beach time. We all loved being close enough to town to walk, and the older kids thought it was cool to be able to take off in groups without mom and dad tagging along! They especially loved the frozen yogurt shop, and tshirt shops. We all enjoyed Clementines, and the gorgeous downtown area. The owner, Jim, was very quick to respond to any questions or concerns, and the home was furnished with anything and everything you'd need except clothes and food! They had all kinds of toys, riding toys, games and books. Everything was clean, well maintained and family friendly. If we return to South Haven, this is the home we'll rent !
We have enjoyed a family vacation for several years at the Ice House and the Sun House for our family of 13. The homes offer so much ---- close to town, Kid's Corner and Lake Michigan. The pool and hot tube are a great attraction. Jim is an excellent owner, responding quickly should there be a question. The homes are well maintained and stocked with everything you would need during your stay.
We are all well and happy, though sad to see another summer come and gone so quickly. This year was our tenth year at the ice house and we have so many happy memories of our times there and we have 100's of pictures to prove it. We are deeply grateful for having been able to find such a great place in South Haven to stay and a house so well furnished and taken care of by so competent and caring a landlord. The addition of the house next door was very fortunate for us as it allowed us to have a real family reunion with Judy and her family next door, a tradition started by my in-laws some twenty years ago. It made it possible for much contact back and forth. As you saw when you came this year, we often had joint meals and took turns cooking. We spent time together in each other's pools and hot tubs, walked downtown every night for ice cream and shopping before going on to the lighthouse to watch the sunset. And best of all, gathering on the beach to swim, kayak, walk, sunbath, fly kites, stand on our head, and build castles in the sand.
While we would like to continue this tradition indefinitely, like the summer past, time marches on. Already one grandchild is missing for the past two years. He is out the door and gone. Another will soon be on her way. Right now she is starting her junior year in college in West Africa. While Judy's grands are younger, one daughter and her family will return to China next summer where they adopted their daughter some 11 years ago. Our grands happy summer memories took place in South Haven. You helped make this possible and we will always be grateful. So it is with great sadness that I inform you that we will not be able to renew for next summer. Kids grow up, time marches on, we grow old. I hope that some other deserving family finds even half the fun we have had at in the Ice House in South Haven.
Thanks for everything, but especially all the improvements you have made over the years, especially this last year. Please feel free to post the above to your website to let others know what a great place you have for rent.
We remain, Dick and Jane
P.S. I am crying as I send this.
This house was perfect. The layout of the bedrooms and bathrooms gave for plenty of privacy for each family, but allowed for fun together in the gathering spaces both inside and outside. The owners take very good care of this place because not only was everything clean, it was in great condition. I felt right at home from the moment we walked through the door.
The other little details made our stay great. The wi-fi in the house allowed the couple of work-aholics in our group to enjoy themselves but still feel connected to work. They had all the ammenities for children of all ages as well.
We stayed in November, but will definitley come back in the summer as we were only a few blocks from South Haven's adorable down town.
The owners are great to work with! I would recommend this house again and again!
South Haven is a coastal city located on the eastern shore of beautiful Lake Michigan. The Black River Harbor is one of the most attractive recreational harbors on Lake Michigan. Summertime activities include swimming, boating, fruit picking, golfing, hiking, and biking. Dubbed as the 'Blueberry Capital of the World', South Haven hosts the annual National Blueberry Festival each August. Winter activities include skiing, sledding, and ice skating. Of course, the great dining, museums, galleries, and shopping is available year-round. The house is just a short walk down the sidewalk to the fabulous Kid's Corner Playground, which boasts a large wooden playscape structure that overlooks Lake Michigan. South Beach access is adjacent to Kid's Corner. The quaint downtown South Haven, with its unique shops, eateries, and pubs nestled along the banks of the picturesque Black River Harbor is also just a short walk down the sidewalk.
