This home was originally built in the 1950's and developed over time to respond perfectly to the challenges and opportunities afforded by the Joshua Tree environment. There are 4 different outdoor living areas, all oriented differently. In summer, there is always a shady, glare-free spot to lounge. In winter, you can always find a place to feel the suns welcoming warmth. There is even a great place to enjoy the huge west view without fighting the west sun- anyone who has lived in the desert knows how special that is. There is even an observation platform high above the roof that offers a 360 degree view of the stars that would rival a planetarium.
Indoors, there are lots of different spaces so a person can be as social, or private as the mood strikes. There is even a large, screened in patio- perfect for a kids 'camp-out' or a drowsy afternoon nap.
The interiors are bright and airy. The well appointed kitchen is adjacent to a main outdoor entertaining area- cooks and their crowd can always mingle.
The property is very private, and ensures that your only neighbors are the large covey of quail that live around the house. Children love to watch how, like clockwork, the quail return every evening to roost in the large olive tree next to the house.

No matter what the weather, there is always a fun outdoor spot at this house. But the real unique feature is the proximity to the Park Boundary, and spectacular hiking and bouldering within a 15 minute walk- its like your own private National Park. And, if you feel like taking a walk on the wild side, Pappy and Harriets ( the 'Best Honkeytonk West of the Mississippi') is just 30 minutes away in Pioneertown.
Great views, spacious. Close to town but far enough to feel isolated.
My photos from our experience look exactly like the posting! So impressed with the many outdoor settings in which to relax. We had a lovely stay recently and would love to return. It was cool when we arrived and the enclosed sun porch was naturally toasty and welcoming as the rest of the home warmed up. So quiet, serene and comfortable - do not hesitate to have your next desert experience here on California Ave! Only upsetting thing I can think of to report was that we did not have more time to spend here in JT with this as our home base - definitely coming back! :)
Overall experience is extremely positive. Easy directions and the house was exactly what was offered-- which was perfect. Beautiful views, ample room and clean space. Would certainly return!
This was a perfect place for our first trip to the desert! Being Midwesterners, we weren't sure what to expect, but after staying in this beautiful home, we'll be back! The home is spotless, and well stocked with everything you need. The views from all of the windows are fabulous, and give you a panoramic view of the entire valley. It's close to the official entrances to Joshua Tree where we spent our days, but also close to the actual border for some unofficial hiking. Beds were very comfortable, and worked well for our three college aged children and us. Great outdoor seating areas and a lovely upper deck to see the stars. Home is stocked with good books, games, utensils, and a fireplace and fire pit. After hiking all day, we simply curled up on the comfortable couches and chairs in the living room and read. No wifi, which is a big plus, in that it forced us all to unplug. While we couldn't get into Pappy and Harriet's, we ended up at the Kimi Grill, which had great sushi (yes, weird for the desert!).
We loved our Christmas present to ourselves, and would love to return! (But next time, we'll bring binoculars!)
This is a beautiful home, very clean and well-maintained and the listing is completely accurate. We rented for a few days over Christmas so we didn't make much use of the outside areas due to the cold, but the landscaping is lovely with lots of areas for relaxing and we did do some stargazing from the rooftop deck on Christmas Eve. The house is quite large inside and you have spectacular views of the valley and mountains from the living room, dining room, and kitchen. We enjoyed the artwork throughout the house and the large dining room table was great for eating and for playing games in the evening. The furniture and beds are very comfortable and there was plenty of room for the six of us and we even made use of the sunroom, which was sunny and warm even though it was in the 40s outside. We were very impressed with the kitchen, which has everything you need to cook whatever you want, and the pots and pans were very high quality which we've found is not always the case in VRBO/HomeAway rentals. The house is close to Joshua Tree National Park and we went hiking the three days we stayed at the house. Lori was very responsive to my emails and we would definitely recommend this property to our family and friends and rent again when we return to Joshua Tree.
The house had a charming fireplace, great sunroom, and fully equipped kitchen. The outside areas to hangout had a very cool desert vibe. Our favorite spot of the house was the rooftop stargazing deck!
Property is a 15 Minute Walk from the Park Boundary, with Hiking Trails, Rock Formations and Views that Rival Those of the Managed Areas of the Park- Without the Crowds!
