The ARTIST CABIN is part of the Skihuts and Summer cabins between Ouray and Silverton Colorado at 11,000' on Red Mountain Pass. Located right on the famous Million Dollar Highway (Hwy 550) in the heart of the San Juan Mountains.
The Artist cabin is an old mining cabin located at the Mining ghost town of Chatannoga recently renovated, not fancy but clean and comfortable, very private with no neighbors. It is solar powered, with most of the conveniences of home. It has spectacular panoramic high alpine views, warm, dry, quiet - a year round escape.
Very close to Ouray, Ridgway, Telluride, Durango, and Silverton offering shopping, music and film festivals, mine tours, train rides, museums and more. Endless recreation in some of the Rockies most beautiful mountains, out the door backcountry and cross country skiing, hiking, snowshoeing, central to all 4 wheel drive ATV trails, road or mountain biking, hot springs, snowboarding, sledding, fishing, mining ruins and ghost towns.
This cabin has 2 Bedrooms downstairs one with a King Bed and one with a Queen Bed, 1 bedroom upstairs with 4 singles (2 of these are a bunk bed). Open living area with fully equipped Kitchen, and dining, and great spring fed (drinkable) mountain water. 1 full bathroom, hot shower and a flush toilet. There is a large deck on the back of the cabin with gas BBQ, great mountain views and no neighbors. Ground level walk off deck leading to campfire area and mineral creek, beaver ponds and great mountain exploration.
These cabins are your your best value in this area, affordable family rates, nightly rate, children are free. Perfect for a couple, single family, multiple small families and small groups. Sleeps 8 maximum.
This property is easy to get to, 10 minutes from Silverton and 30 Minutes from Ouray on Highway 550.

You want to stay here if you like being off on your own yet close to some really great attractions. They are quiet, without distractions, relaxing, located in a million dollar setting all by yourself. Great places to hang out and spend some really fun times with your friends.
We spent 5 days here while keeping in the mountains. It was nice to be away from Ouray and Silverton but close enough to get things we needed. The views are spectacular in all directions. Even though it's close to the road you do not hear the traffic, especially in the evenings when there are only a handful of cars. The sky at night is thick with stars and a clear view of the Milkyway. We will be back.
We've stayed here multiple times and my only hesitancy at recommending this cabin is there will be more competition next year. It is located in one of the most dramatic spots in Colorado, just below Red Mountain Pass and just off 550. (You can hear louder road traffic.) In the summer, when we have stayed, the marshy meadows around the cabin are covered in wild flowers. Waterfalls cascade down the sides of the peaks. Inside is as comfortable as you could want for a solar-powered, off-the-grid cabin above 10,000 feet, with far more room than you'd expect. The front bedroom has a new, very comfortable king bed. The queen bed in back shares the room with a piano. Our family of 4 has never had to use the upstairs bunkroom, which could sleep another 4. The kitchen has a good gas stove and modest-sized fridge, plenty of utensils, pans etc. There's a gas grill on the back deck and a nice, hot shower and bath in the bathroom. We used the cabin as a base for mind-blowing hikes (Ice Lake is just down the road); as the world's best backyard where our kids can play or watch hummingbirds, rabbits and deer; and just as a place to hang out, reading books or magazines and gaping at the peaks through the window. (As a bonus, the cabin is well-stocked with skiing and other outdoor magazines.) Be aware that it is not a luxury property; you will have to haul your trash to a dumpster in Silverton, a 10-minute drive away. There's a washing machine (broken last time we visited) but no drier so at a minimum you will have to air dry clothes or wash them in Silverton. Get your groceries in Durango or Montrose while driving in. But none of that matters when you're at the cabin, watching the stars come out over the peaks after another perfect alpine day.
High points: running hot water, propane heat & stove/oven, stocked kitchen (pots, pans, spices, some dry good staples), comfortable furnishings, clean, stack of firewood, photovoltaic electricity, shower, about 80-yds from US 550, access to backcountry
Low points: As long as you realize you're in a high mountain cabin, off grid, I don't think there's anything to list here.
