House, 4 Queen Bedrooms + (Sleeps 10) , 3 Bathrooms, 2 Kitchens, Hillside Views

Our Retreat/Getaway is perfect for one, two, three guests or a large group up to ten. Rates start at $160 per night depending on number of guests. For more information, our website link is below under Owner Info and Contact us.

Flower Hill Farm Retreat offers rustic simplicity for those longing for time in nature. We are located in Western Massachusetts, fifteen to twenty minutes west of Northampton, 30 minutes from Amherst College and UMASS. Our Eco-Friendly Vegetarian Vacation/Getaway Retreat is a 1790 restored farmhouse with an attached artist/writer studio and barn (painting studio). The house has two full downstairs and upstairs apartments. The studio is set between the house and barn and can be connected to the downstairs and upstairs to make for one cozy house. There are three private bathrooms, three queen bedrooms, a tiny double bedroom, and two kitchens. A dining room, that seats up ten is part of the retreat when booking the farmhouse.

The buildings face east and are surrounded by rambling organic gardens, forest, hillside and mountain range views, marvelous sky and landscapes to explore. Cross-country skiing, sledding, and snow shoeing on a twenty-acre hillside (ten acres are in wildlife conservation) in the foothills of the Berkshires just six miles from Northampton, Massachusetts. We are an easy one hour drive from Lenox/Tanglewood and other venues of cultural interest in the Berkshires, Pioneer Valley and Vermont.

It is a great joy to the owner that Flower Hill Farm has evolved into a diverse wildlife habitat. Be sure to bring your binoculars and cameras. By car you will be able to reach Snow Farm in 5 minutes, 12 minutes to Double Edge Theatre and 15 minutes to Northampton.

PLEASE CALL OR EMAIL FOR AVAILABILITY IN CASE WE HAVE FORGOTTEN TO UPDATE CALENDAR.

Flower Hill Farm is a very clean, simple, spacious, rustic place surrounded by the magic of nature. We do not wear shoes inside any of our spaces. Come visit and leave the outside world behind.

We do not use poisons of any kind -- pesticides, herbicides, or any chemical fertilizers -- at Flower Hill Farm.

Outside the walls of the old farmhouse and studio nature abounds with wonders. We have no pets here, but many butterflies, songbirds, fireflies, grouse, wild turkey, woodcock and other creatures of the wild live in our gardens and forest. Guests enjoy breathtaking views -- sunrise, moonrise and stargazing too! Woodland and garden paths along with a country road offer inspiring walks... Don't miss a moonlight walk through the gardens. Hundreds of varieties of plants, shrubs, ornamental and fruit trees add to your outdoor experience throughout the seasons.

Northampton, home to Smith College and the Paradise City Arts Festival, is only 15/20 minutes away, while Lenox/ Tanglewood, Stockbridge, MOCA, Becket, with Jacobs Pillow and Williamstown/Clarke Museum, are an easy 45 minutes to one-hour drive. SNOW FARM is 5 minutes by car and DOUBLE EDGE THEATRE is only 12 minutes drive.

The surrounding hilltowns are filled with great bookstores, excellent restaurants and both famous and unknown writers and artists who have seasonal open studios and sales. Writers' workshops such as Patchwork Farm, yoga, dance and other creative ventures abound in the valley and hilltowns. Snow Farm and the New England Craft Program are five minutes from Flower Hill Farm.

Historic Deerfield, with the Deerfield Inn and Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory; Buckland/Shelburne Falls, with The Bridge Of Flowers and Potholes; Montague, with the Montague Book Mill; Worthington, home to the Sevenars Music Festival; Cummington, with its popular Country Fair, The William Cullen Bryant Homestead, and Greenwood Music Camp; and Windsor, with the Notchview Cross Country Ski Center are all but 15-20-30 minutes away along scenic country roads.

Flower Hill Farm, is only 10 minutes away from an Audubon Sanctuary and the DAR state forest with walking trails and lake for swimming, kayaking, cross country skiing and snow shoeing; Chapel Brook Falls with rock climbing, hiking and waterfalls is just down the road 7 minutes.

We welcome families and extended stays. Our home is perfect for vacations and romantic getaways. Perfect for those feeling a nature deficit.

About Carol

I look forward to welcoming you to our rustic Flower Hill Farm Retreat! My life here is a work-in-progress and both the magical overgrown gardens and restored 1790 farmhouse offer charm, comfort and continued challenges. If you have nature deficit disorder, this is the place for you. On my website I have documented with photographs and listed by families over 50 species of butterflies and 70 plus bird species living or migrating thru our farm. There are enchanting encounters with mammals too. I am working on a book I call 'A Bestiary ~ Tales from a Wildlife Garden.'

I am an artist and farmer, who has given much of the last thirty years to caring for my twenty-one acre hillside in Western Massachusetts. My greatest joy in working with the land has been to see how my farm has become home to a diverse community of wildlife. Through painting, photography and writing, I try to capture the essence of what it is to be closely connected to nature. To cultivating that connection within the rich loam of this Western Massachusetts hillside and my mind.

On my blog Flower Hill Farm, I share the beauty of the wildlife surrounding my old farmhouse. In this way, I try to convey that with careful consideration of conservation and only using organic practices, while being a steward to the land, one can create a true sanctuary for native flora and fauna. And while living in this manner we can create a lush, green, and nourishing retreat for ourselves.

Carol purchased this farmhouse in 1989

Why Carol chose Massachusetts

We were attracted to the beauty, magic and charm of the landscape and rustic farmhouse. The area is rich in cultural happenings and abounds in creativity and fun. Living close to nature, while minutes from a five college area is rather ideal.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Simple living surrounded by serene beauty and sounds of nature. The sky too is large and breathtaking.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We enjoyed our second visit here in paradise just as much as our first one. Now, we have a both a fall and a spring experience. My gardener's heart is filling in the summer. It must be gorgeous! Thank you, Carol, for opening your magical place to us. What a treasure. See you again!

Oasis in the Berkshires

  • 4 of 5

Flower Hill Farm was a lovely oasis in the Berkshires. Carol was very helpful and available but completely unobtrusive. I loved the gorgeous surrounding hills filled with beautiful flowers, birds and mist. Reading while sitting on the upstairs deck was wonderful and relaxing. The apartment has an eclectic selection of books for browsing and a charming indoor reading nook. There is also air conditioning, a rare luxury in a 1700's farmhouse which was much appreciated on the sultry August weekend I was visiting! It was a delightful stay.

Relaxing getaway

  • 5 of 5

Flower Hill Farm is perfect for a relaxing, quiet getaway. Carol is a gracious host and was able to accommodate us (very last minute) this past holiday weekend. We reserved the downstairs apartment which was very comfortable and pictured accurately. However, the photos can't fully depict all the natural beauty surrounding the house, the grounds are exquisite and we enjoyed sitting outside as the sun rose each morning and exploring the garden during the day. In the evenings, the stars and fireflies lit up the garden which was truly a sight! Carol shared some details about the monarch butterfly season and other tidbits about the garden, she's so knowledgeable and passionate (which we loved). There are also some great hiking trails nearby. We do hope to return and will be recommending Flower Hill Farm to friends. Thanks again Carol!

Felt at home

Carol Duke has created an extraordinary place to stay for anyone visiting the western MA area. This is a perfect place to unwind. I stayed in the upstairs apartment. What a great view I had of the surrounding area. The accommodations are quite comfortable and her garden is very beautiful this time of year. I have already recommended Flower Hill Farm to several of my friends.

Worth repeat visits

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have had several stays at Flower Hill Farm. It has all the charm one can imagine of a 200 year old farm house. We have stayed in the upstairs apartment, looking out on the expansive grounds, hills and sky. When sitting on the deck, we were almost nestled in the two ancient sugar maples. We truly felt like children of nature.

On another occasion, we stayed in the downstairs apartment with the grand fireplace. History came alive for us in that space. The wide-planked floors are beautiful, and the dining room lets in the sunshine in a magical way. Actually, "magical" can be used to describe each apartment. The studio (on a more recent visit) reminded us of our younger selves, traveling through Europe—especially with the claw-footed tub in the living space. And next to the tub is the most magnificent marble torso, created by a local artist. Each apartment is filled with art—many by Carol, herself, whose photographs are exquisite. Her specialty and mission has been to glorify and care for the Monarch Butterfly offering them respite on the land. Her most recent photos from her trip to Venice, Italy are exceptionally romantic. Carol made us feel welcome and at home. She was helpful in every way possible. Her knowledge of this rich and inspiring area added to our enjoyment. As we walked on the grounds with her, she often astounded us with her identification of the many birds who visit.

Our visits to Flower Hill have been unparalleled. The experience fills all of one's senses. It is the best way I know of stepping back from the frenzy of the modern world and enjoying history, art and nature at a human pace.

I love Flower Hill Farm!

  • 5 of 5

I thoroughly enjoyed staying at Flower Hill Farm. I stayed in the studio, which has a very comfortable bed and all amenities, and looks out over a spectacular garden and views of distant mountains. It is a charming, sustainable retreat with plenty of wildlife and birdsong. The accommodations are outstanding. My family members have stayed here in the past and they loved it too. Carol Duke is delightful, warm and welcoming, and very attentive to any need I might have. I recommend Flower Hill Farm with gusto!

Back at school...

  • 1 of 5

Visting for my daughters college graduation my family and I have never been made to feel less welcome. I was constantly contacted on the day of arrival to give updates on our arrival time - with coordinating an international arrival, arriving from out of state ourselves and trying to get something to eat this became very irritating. When we arrived we were met by the owner who reeled off a long list of rules, down to keeping the compostable bags in the freezer and a blow by blow detail of how to recycle - something that is the norm in Colorado!!! Carole even reprimanded my 19 year old son for not paying close attention. We had been travelling all day so he was tired as were we are!! We were supposed to chose our rooms immediately and also pay an additional $100 for a room that wasn't even going to be used by us and hadn't been included in the original booking. Each morning we had a call about what were our plans and were there any issues - over kill. When I questioned the additional charge Carole became hostile - this was the morning of the graduation during her usual morning call... Btw don't count on the WIFI working, it didn't the whole time we were there but no refund was offered on that although we got a refund for 1 room for 1 night..

If you like rules and regulations and being treated like a child this is the place for you.

Owner's Response: Jane, I am so sorry I came across so thoughtlessly. I really did not mean to make you feel belittled or not welcome in any way. I know that after a day of traveling it must be hard to have to have a check-in with instructions. It is awkward for me too. I need to find a better way to be sure folks understand the house rules especially about not throwing food into the trash. I have everyone put it into the freezer to be sure we do not invite ants, flies and other critters that belong outside. It really works. There are other things on my list that help folks enjoy their stay more so I try to be sure everyone reads them. I hope you know you were not charged for the dining room. The rate for renting the entire house has since your visit gone up a bit to cover the expense of that new room. Having extra fees is not a good idea. I do call guests the day of their arrival to be sure they have directions and/or they are not lost. I am usually very busy getting the place ready so do not have time to do that more than once or twice. Most guests are grateful and a some have told me so since they had lost their directions and did get lost. I wish I had been told, when I checked in to see if you needed anything on your second day, that the wifi was not working. Verizon has been on strike and not good about getting here to fix things. It was working most of the time for me but I could have told you to just turn off and on the modem and it would have worked again. Sorry about not knowing. It is usually more reliable. Again, I am so sorry that I made you uncomfortable. You were my guests and I feel awful about that. I do hope you and your family were comfortable when settled and that you enjoyed your time and all slept well while visiting.
