About The Owner

About us... Cindy and Dan Duriscoe, the owners of the property, want your stay to be as enjoyable as possible. We are former employees of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks and we want to share our knowledge with you. We purchased the property in 1997 and lived here almost 10 years. We know the land, and we did most of the work on the property ourselves. We are constantly making improvements as time allows, and we welcome suggestions. Do not hesitate to inquire about the parks, the monument, and other attractions in the area. We know that this piece of land offers something special at all seasons (Dan's favorite is actually winter). We have watched the land and sky from here, and the peacefulness of the location is unmatched. Both of us enjoy hiking, backpacking, X-country skiing in the Sierra. Cindy loves horseback riding and snowshoeing on nearby trails.

The Owner purchased this house in 1997

Why The Owner chose California

This part of California is known for its mild climate, calm winds and stable air most of the time (which makes for wonderful observations of the night sky through a telescope), fall colors of the black oaks (some seasons are more intense than others), and the elevational gradient that allows quick access to a variety of life zones. We think this location is ideally located for access to the high country and foothills, and gives a taste of both. The peace and quiet, walking among our own manzanita woodlands cannot be experienced elsewhere.

What makes this house unique

Taking walks on the property and neighboring monument lands. Watching the sunset while enjoying a glass of wine. Observing the night sky or a sunrise from the hot tub. Mountain biking or horseback riding on nearby trails. The community of people is very friendly and helpful when work needs to be done. Wintertime can be very peaceful and majestic walking roads and trails, making wildlife observations, just plain having fun in the snow!

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a great way to wrap up a three week California adventure. We had fun exploring the parts of the park that are still open (hiked the Redwood Canyon loop and braved some icy spots to get to the incredible views on Little Baldy), and loved coming "home" to this amazing house. There is nothing better than a hot tub under the stars after a day of hiking. We hope to be able to come back one day!

Spectacular view!

  • 4 of 5

The house was cozy and comfortable for our group of 5 adults. The view out the front windows of the mountains is amazing. We also enjoyed the stars and chirping frogs at night.

Took about a half hour to drive to Kings Canyon for cross-country skiing.

Quiet stay, beautiful view, close to Sequioa NP

  • 5 of 5

The place is very quiet. We loved it. It looks nicer and bigger than in the picture. It is about 20 minutes from Sequioa National Park Entrance. We will stay here again next time.

This properity was great to hang out and tour Kjngs Cyn & Sequois. 20 to 25 min to get into the parks. We found the propriety even late at night on a Friday just following there directions and phone gps. Kim told us if we ever got lost to call her and she would find us and get us. Very peaceful with great views.

SWEET Views and close to Sequoia-Kings Canyon

  • 5 of 5

This darling home was the perfect jumping off point for our visit to Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Park. We made it from the cabin to the Big Stump Entrance in about 20 minutes each time we drove it. There is no easy way to get anywhere in this part of the country: the roads fold and twist around the rough terrain but Dan and Cindy's cabin was FAR closer than driving up from Three Rivers to see the northern sights. (We know this because we stayed in Three Rivers the later part of our trip!!!) And the views??? Outstanding. My husband has a high stress job, and when we stepped out of the car to look over the hills and valleys I watched his whole body relax. Do yourself a favor while you're in the cabin: get up early enough to see the sunrise and watch the mist move through the hills up from the San Joaquin valley in the distance. Gorgeous. Silent and peaceful.

The beds were comfortable and we had everything we needed in the kitchen to cook full meals in the morning and at night. We stopped for groceries in Fresno on the way up (there's not much in the way of a full grocer once you reach the park)and found that there were plenty of spices/sugar/salt in the home. Having a washer and dryer was a HUGE bonus after hiking in the woods for several days!!! While there is a swamp cooler, we never used it while we were there. We were gone during the hottest parts of the day and by the time we got back each evening a strong breeze was blowing through the open windows and it cooled down quickly.

Reading through previous reviews about the roads is puzzling. Yes, the driveway is steep and unpaved but we had NO problem in a standard car. Nor did we have any issues with the provided directions. I can see how a night time arrival might be tricky but there's nothing scary or precarious about the approach to the house. I suppose if we weren't used to hills it might be intimidating but if your drive through Sequoia-Kings Canyon you'll find that ALL the roads are like this...especially the ones that take you to the quiet 'secret' trails no one else frequents.

We hit the highlights while in the park: The General Grant, The Sherman Tree and Moro Rock but the BEST trails were the ones that require some effort to get to: we drove WAY past Big Meadows to hike Marvin Pass (got chased back down the mountain by thunder and hail) and drove all the way to Road's End (so completely worth the drive)and hiked past Mist Falls to Paradise Valley. Lovely.
