About the property

Luxery villa on an acre of gardens/ private pool/360 rooftop views

This Santa Fe style house sits atop a hillside overlooking the Manuel Antonio coastline to the West and the Talamunca Range w/ 5,000 ft San Gerenimo to the North. The jungle comes right up to the pool, and it's often possible to see two species of monkeys, iguanas, sloths, and many species of birds, while lounging around the pool or from the many decks. Sixteen Scarlet Macaws were recently introduced to a sanctuary near our property and are often seen at the house, as well as large Toucans, also new to our area. Our rooftop terrace offers some of the best bird watching opportunities in the country. There are over 3,000 sq. ft of living space, with decks that surround most of the two stories as well as a covered roof top. The entire space can be opened up to give the feel of living in the outdoors with nearly an acre of mature gardens, with hundreds of tropical plants, orchids and fruit trees. The upstairs is an open living space that includes kitchen, dining, living room and TV area, and also a bathroom. Downstairs are three bedrooms with AC: one with a king sized bed, two with queen sized beds (one also has a bed for kids, plus lots of other sleeping options around the house) all open on to the lower patio and pool. Our onsite caretakers provide 24/7security and help w/ all amenities. We have Wi Fi, also cable TV.

General house info: We have had the same wonderful caretakers since we began renting in 2000 ready to help in any way. Ana offers wonderful 'Tico' meals at very reasonable prices. Her son Andres helps with the best tours and transportation options. He now has his own van and offers San Jose Airport transfers right to the house for up to 5 adults and 2 kids (he can send a bigger van for larger parties). He can also take you on tours where others don't go into the mountains or Southern coast. He's a great naturalist and photographer.

Unlike so many other houses crowded together near noisy roads, bars and restaurants, this property is secluded, yet 5 minutes drive to the happening town of Quepos or 10 minutes drive to the magnificent beaches of Manuel Antionio Nat. Park. You can walk to the main road in a few minutes, where there are more than half a dozen restaurants within a quick stroll. From the covered roof you have a 360 degree view where you can watch spectacular sunsets over the ocean . Breezes blow all day and at night switch directions and come off the mountains to keep this house comfortable all the time. The house is fully equipped with everything you need for your stay. Quepos has wonderful fresh produce, fish, meat and chicken as well as a growing selection of wines and liquors, so you can stay at home and cook or ask Anna to introduce you to local foods. We try to offer the best rates in the area, knowing you'll value your experience with us and recommend the house to others.

There is twice a week maid service and laundry, but you can request additional cleaning and laundry from Anna. Security is provided by our on site caretakers who live in a separate house at the entry to the property.

This house was built by local residents to the highest standards and reflects their experience of living in Costa Rica over 11 years. Much of the art is by the owner and other artists living in the area. The gardens are a work of love started in 1996 and entice you to take walks in the lush greenery and to see the wonders of the tropics close at hand (It's really like living in a tropical zoo!) Check out our personal web site for more pictures, info, maps and links to the area and services. The owner will gladly help with any aspect of your vacation including transportation to the house from the international airport.

Amenities: The house is completely furnished: full kitchen with all amenities, TV room with DVD player, cable, speakers for your ipod or other devices w/ charging ports. Phone service, Wi Fi , also washer and dryer, pool with two out door showers, covered carport.

Activities: Nature walks and tours, snorkeling, surfing, whitewater rafting, sea kayaking, horse rides, boat tours, National parks, great snooping around with your car up and down the coasts finding isolated beaches etc. Ask Andres for suggestions.

Area: Costa Rica's favorite destination, with the most beautiful beaches and a fun port town with lots of restaurants, bars and night life.

Steve has written his memoir on the families 11 yrs in Costa Rica: 'Stumbling into Paradise' a great read if you're planning on visiting the country or dropping out to live on the beach.

About Steve Osman

We lived in Manuel Antonio from 1989-2000 and built our house after we knew exactly what we wanted in tropical living. Steve started the first tour company on the W Coast offering rafting and sea kayaking. In it's design, gardens and art (mostly by the family) it reflects our love for Costa Rica.

Steve Osman purchased this house in 1997

Why Steve Osman chose Quepos

Live like the locals would with all the personal touches of a private home. Our location is near everything you might need or want to visit, but very private. Looking out, it's mostly jungle views, away from large hotels, restaurants and homes so you'll see more animals and birds than in most other places in our area. Guests often remark that they saw more more animals and birds at the house then their tour of the Nat. Park. On a recent trip we counted 27 different species of birds in one day!

What makes this house unique

We've had the same wonderful caretakers since we started renting in 2000 - see the reviews! They are there to ensure you have a great vacation. Our hill top location is one of the best spots to view a multitude of birds, as well as the local monkeys, iguanas and occasional sloths. Andres is a talented photographer and loves to take guests to less visited locales in the area.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Words escape us to adequately describe our visit to Costa Rica and the paradise found at Casa Tropical. Our stay was overwhelmingly perfect. We cooked, swam, explored, watch the daily troop of monkeys, iguanas, birds and butterflies, listened to music, met on the roof for sunset and were quite spoiled by weeks end. We are most anxious to return and cannot imagine a more beautiful spot to come back to."

-Cheri and Steve

"We had a wonderful time in Costa Rica. Your house is lovely. My son learned to swim in your pool, and he was diving by the end of the holiday. The kids have rated it the best holiday ever. We had a perfect mix of adventure and R&R. We went white water rafting with Iguana Tours. They were great. We went to Isia Damas. We saw monkeys, sloths, and boas. Thanks again. We'll be back at some point. We can see why you love it there so much. It's a wonderful spot."

-Les and Lydia

"We just returned from Costa Rica and wanted to let you know how great we thought the house was. Your house is so beautifully maintained and the art and architecture so aligned with the setting."

-Jennifer and Jerry

Hello Steve & Family,

Words just can't express the awesome vacation we had! The house was beautiful and so cozy. We loved the art work around the house. I would love to have an abstract painting of yours.

Hannia and her son David were very helpful. David went out with the girls once. They hit the night life in Quepos. We enjoyed both Quepos and Manuel Antonio's restaurants. So much to tell and cherish the rest of our lives! Sally

We had a fabulous time in Costa Rica - Thanks in great part to your beautiful house and its magical setting!! We wish we had more time there, and are looking forward to returning sometime soon. We would like to thank Hannia for all her help and kind gestures. They really add to the experience in so many ways.

Thanks for everything!

Barb -from the UK

We did have an excellent time. The

setting of the house was magnificent, and if there hadn't been so manygreat activities, we could have spent even more hours just sitting on

the veranda watching the wildlife. Claudio and Annia were super helpful. We will keep a reference to the property and may find ourselves back

there again! Mike and Family

Casa Tropical

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful artist's house, secluded yet 5 minutes walk to bus stop on main road between Quepos and Manuel Antonio. Very helpful caretakers who are available to cook fresh local seafood dinners. Very reasonable taxi service. Very clean and comfortable. Monkeys and iguanas in nearby trees; magnificent flowers and foliage everywhere. Many local restaurants ranging from fancy to cafes. Local Costa Rican people are genuinely friendly, engaging and helpful. Beautiful local beaches, whitewater rafting, horseback riding and zip lining recommended. Lots of fishing and jungle tours available. Short, scenic flight to San Jose. We would highly recommend this property as a great alternative to a traditional hotel or "luxury villa".

Beautiful grounds and views!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at Casa Tropical. The accommodations were comfortable spacious for the 6 of us. The view from the rooftop you can see mountains, ocean and best of all many species of birds, macaws and we had a visit from family of squirrel monkeys wrestling on the deck. Andres the caretaker went above and beyond with transports from airport and his knowledge of area. He set us up with his associates for a tour of Manual Antonio park, day at Secret beach snorkeling, kayaking and paddle boarding. Manual Antonio has beautiful beaches, restaurants and views of sunset. Would come back in a heartbeat. Wonderful experience thank you Steve for letting us stay at your beautiful home!

Tropical Eden

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved Casa Tropical & with this being our first ( but not last ) visit to this beautiful country we were thrilled beyond expectations . We arrived late at night, in the dark & awoke early in the morning to a myriad of exotic sights , sounds & smells : macaws , toucans , caracaras , monkeys , iguanas etc etc ! A tropical Eden for sure !

With the mountains , ocean & all the lush vegeation framing our view ... spectacular ! Andres & Kassandra were so very very helpful & unending resource of helpful information about everything . As well Jonathan who chauffeured us to & from the airport . It was like having a individually escorted tour . He was wonderful ! Henry , our knowledgeable naturalist , who led us through the Park .

Everything in our home away from home was so clean & efficiently laid out . Immersed in this colourful , artistic breath taking spot was sheer joy . Convenient to hop on the local bus & head to the beach or market or Manuel Antonio Park . Hopefully we will be back ...

Thank you Steve & Marylou for sharing your special place with us ...

Thumbs up for Casa Tropical !

Awesome Experience!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from our Costa Rica vacation and our family of five were all very pleased with Casa Tropical! The house and amenities were exactly as described. The house is beautifully maintained and the wildlife sightings were as advertised. We had two large groups of monkeys appear in our four days as well as some beautiful bird sightings (macaws, caracaras and toucans). The house is convenient to both Manuel Antonio National Park (very cool park, great trails and lots of wildlife including sloths and monkeys) and Quepos. We loved the marina area in Quepos (a couple very good restaurants - Z and Gabriella's) as well as their Saturday morning market.

The owner is very easy to work with and the caretakers are lovely people who can help with any need during your stay. All in all a wonderful trip and Casa Tropical provided an excellent base for our time in the Manual Antonio region!

Amazing View and House

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful house with an amazing 360 view of the ocean and mountains! The house was very comfortable for the 7 of us and Ana and Andres made us feel very welcome and comfortable. Andres was awesome at calling in the different exotic birds and giving us recommendations of who to use for different tours. The house was very close to the beach, shopping and restaurants.

It was definitely hard to leave the roof and its view! We can't wait to come back and visit again!

Thanks again,

Lori, Jeff and Skipper Clan

I've never written a review, but will for Casa Tropical. I have travelled extensively and stayed in beautiful VRBO homes. Words can't capture the magic of Casa Tropical. The photos don't capture the beauty of the home-it has the perfect Central American feel and the owners thought of everything. The house is breezy and feels like you are outside because of the extensive screening. I was never hot-which is surprising because I live in the constant air conditioning in Florida. The wildlife is the highlight-monkeys, scarlet macaws, and toucans were cool. Ana is a delight-have hee cook for you-her guacamole can't be topped. Andres helped tremendously and we didn't have to worry for a minute. Use the cab drivers Andres suggests-if they can't get you-they find someone-they will stop at the store, atm, etc. Also, by going to Mary at the beach-she knew to call Andres when we left our shopping bag at the beach. Also, ask Andres to take family photos at the house. I wish we would have asked him. He takes amazing photos! The house is on the same setting of the only 5 star hotel-I walked there-and I would rather stay at Casa Tropical. I've never stayed at a house with a covered roof deck-I spent every morning and evening there-extremely comfortable loungers and hammock-view of the jungle, mountains and ocean. If you hate bugs-bring lots of bug spray because they are plentiful in CR. Also, eat plugs if you don't like to wake up to the sound of birds. We loved the early morning the best. Choose this house!!!!
