Guestbook comments from the manager

The Sunshine Cottage was absolutely perfect. I spent a lot of time researching rentals and I couldn't be happier with our choice. I look forward to many more visits. Location - Kailua is the perfect beach town. Wonderful food, gorgeous beaches, friendly locals and amazing golf. The cottage location in Kailua is perfect, walking distance to the beach and the beach park. Convenient parking, walking distance to Kalapawai market, bike & running trails. Accommodations - the cottage is wonderful, everything feels brand new and upgraded. The fully stocked kitchen made cooking at the cottage so easy. The open living space with wifi was so convenient to get a little work done (yes, even on vacation). Washer, dryer, dishwasher, everything you need for an easy, relaxing vacation. Thank you for the wonderful stay!

Well Appointed Quaint Seaside Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

No need to continue researching safe accommodations for your visit to the island of Oahu. My research led me to the seaside town of Kailua. Up a private lane through a gated fence, directly to the dutch-door of a quaint cozy cottage! It was the perfect home away from home. Equipped with a full open kitchen suited for any type of cook...or perhaps you are like me, just desiring a beautiful place to pour a nice glass of Merlot while enjoying my beautiful flowers we picked up at the grocery store down the road. After an awesome venture to the North Shore's 2015 Billabong Surfing Masters competition and a visit to beautiful Waimea Valley, it was time to close our first day. The hot shower felt so good. I loved how "I" controlled the water pressure. Ladies, the lighting in the bathroom is perfect. There is even a retractable, magnifying mirror for a closer look at our beauty! I am a solid "morning person", however the king-sized bed is so comfy, I even questioned getting out of it. Then I remembered, I was only steps away from two of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Focused, I brewed our coffee and grabbed a beach chair. It was going to be another wonderful 83 degree day in December. We visited many places. The Macadamia Nut Farm Tour is not to be missed. You'll love it! Try some shrimp at a shrimp farm or stay closer to home and enjoy Buzz's Steakhouse. You won't be disappointed! Eat the fresh fruits of the island. Explore, unwind and enjoy. Don't overpack, use the washer and dryer at the cottage!

Jim and Marjorie, We loved our visit. Your home felt like our home! Please convey our gratitude with Zak. We appreciated his kindness and professionalism. He was very helpful upon our arrival. It was a pleasure meeting Paul and his lovely wife. The evening prior to our departure, we elected to share our perishables with the neighbors next door. What a lovely visit we had! Thank you for the many added touches. The music/cd player, the well equipped kitchen to the table coasters. The detailed Artwork! I am curious regarding the story behind the signed surfboard displayed in the kitchen. Your eye for detail has not gone unnoticed! The many kinds of bed pillows to suit all types of sleepers is brilliant! We were so pleased and felt as though we were visiting family and you know... Family always returns😊 Mahalo for a wonderful "home away" experience!

P.S. We hope you enjoyed the bottle of wine we left for you. It was made in our region.

Owner's Response: Aloha, Thank you so much for taking the time to review our home. We call the Cottage home when we are in Hawaii, and we miss it every day we are away. The Cottage is almost 8 years old now, my sons and brother-in-law helped me build it, my wife and I did the design and furnishing plans. It is built to resemble the old plantation style homes of the 1940's. The artwork is from both local and French artists. Our favorite piece is the painting by Susie Anderson that is hanging over the TV. Most of the 'artifacty' stuff came from Island Treasures in Kailua, our good friend Gayle is the owner and she lives on Lanai'i now - she still commutes and works in the store most days. The surfboard in the kitchen with all the signatures on it was a surprise 60th birthday card/present from my wife Marj and my son Chris.. Kailua will always be 'home' to us. Mahalo for selecting our home to spend your vacation in. A Hui Hou Jim and Marj

Stellar stay

  • 5 of 5

The Sunshine Cottage is an exceptionally cozy place to stay in Kailua. Keeping in mind that this is a rental for two, the living room is quite spacious. The kitchen is well equipped with high end features. There is a comfortable king size bed. The bathroom has a large walk in shower and plenty of extra room. The air conditioning is quiet and very efficient. The island motif decorations are charming. It was a short walk down the block to popular Kailua beach. Weekend traffic on the main road is packed so thankfully there is a parking space at the cottage. The property manager was very responsive.

WOW!!! All I can say is WOW again 😊😊

  • 5 of 5

First off I don’t normally leave reviews but this one Deserves more than I could ever say!! we left the airport and stoped at a couple local spots on our way to our little slice of heaven, “sunshine Cottage” the place we now get to call home for the next ten days “ I only wish it was our home” upon arrival, I realized how close from doorstep to lush white and the softest sands my toes would ever feel maybe 100 steps from the house. I looked at my wife (we just got married) and we both said that this is our own beach paradise. This little hidden gem that We wish We had discovered on our last trip. This cute town has everything I needed. Whole Foods, longs Safeway, for your grocery needs. Awesome beaches fantastic food (check out Buzzes) 2min walk, from house kalapawai general store 5 min walk great sandwiches and the best coffee and everything beagles just before you see the sunrise between the little mountains they call the(mokes) in lanikai 10 min walk to the right just below our favorite hike to the pillbox, something you should do!! Ok now about this amazing home, everything you could think of is at your fingertips. From the kitchen “because I love to cook” to the living area to relax with my wife and listen to music, to the honeymoon suite, where we slept like a king and queen. I know this is a beachfront property so I didn’t expect AC, but they have them in all rooms and work like a champ!!!! Still our favorite part was opening all the windows, and I think I counted 18 in the living room, and 8 or so from the hallway and the bedroom just to listen to the trees and the waves crash at night. Pure Zin. Thanks again for this amazing home. It will always hold a special place in our hearts. We will see you again mahalo

Most Amazing Honeymoon Stay Ever

  • 5 of 5

This Sushine Cottage sits a stones throw away from the beautiful Kailua Beach on the Windward side. First impression of outside is bright and cheery. As you enter through the little gate there is a cute outdoor shower and some chairs. First impression when you walk through the front door is WOW. So open and bright with lots of nice windows. Everything was super clean and all the kitchen appliances were easy to use. Nice big fridge. We only used them the first night but the A/C was on point and cooled us off nicely. Marj was so easy to get a hold of and gave us great tips for getting around the island. We enjoyed Buzz’s steakhouse and loved that we could walk to it. Also walking to the little market (Kalapawai) for coffee every morning was the best way to start the day. We also loved to visit Lanikai beach which was a three min drive down the road. PillBox was an awesome hike that Marj also recommended and you could walk to that as well. We visited all sides of the island this trip but kailua was our favorite. All and all this trip was amazing and this little cottage was the best place to come back to everyday. It really made you feel like you were home in paradise. We definitely recommend this place to any of our friends and families and we will for sure be visiting it again in the future.

Luxury, Quiet, Private Ocean Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We truly loved our stay at the Sunshine Cottage a second time. The location of the house is perfect and Kailua town is a gem. The beach and public park is just across the street and this house is nested about 3 houses down from the street on a private drive. We enjoyed walking on the beach and swimming in the ocean each day. This is a great place if you just come to rest, read, cook in the gourmet kitchen, watch movies or if you want to be active there is so much to do and see on the island! We rode bikes, hiked nearby Pillbox Peak ( the trail entrance is just up the street), took kite surfing lessons and long walks on the beach. The beach here is special with fine, soft white sand from the coral reef ( the other side of the island has coarse volcanic sand ). The outdoor shower at the cottage was so convient coming off the beach. There is a secure gate and fencing around the property with key-less electronic door locks. The house is very clean, the linens first class and beautiful original art on the walls. The bathroom is luxurious. The bed was comfortable. The kitchen extremely well stocked. There are restaurants nearby and we walked into the downtown. Kailua has a good small town vibe with all the conviences. In the immediate nieghborhood there is Buzz's Steak House and a Market Dehli a few blocks away for espresso and baked goods in the am if you wish ( joy they had gluten free!). It was a perfect stay! Any inquiries we made to the manager were answered immediately and professionally. We had the chance to meet the owners who are also very kind and accommodating. We will return!

Wonderful Stay Spoiled

  • 2 of 5

My wife and I stayed at the Sunshine Cottage for the last week of July, 2017. We came to the Island from Connecticut in connection with a wedding at nearby Kailua Beach.

I would say that this is a 5 star property and location with a 2 star AC situation. Since we were visiting in late July, the AC situation was the take away.

We had very high expectations for our stay due to the consistent 5 star reviews that we saw listed on the site when we made our reservation. I was careful to select a property with AC.

When we arrived at the unit we found that all the windows in the property were open, and the AC was not operating. The temperature outside was 88 degrees with approximately 80% humidity and very little breeze. (Heat Index 105). This was disappointing in and of itself, it was not appropriate for a property that advertises air conditioning. My worst suspicion was quickly confirmed when we shut the windows and turned the system on. I quickly found that even at max power, the AC unit was hopelessly under powered for the conditions. The AC unit they choose was a ductless mini split with a unit in the bedroom and living area. I would estimate that the unit was putting out the equivalent of a 12k BTU unit, which is far too small for a place this size in Hawaii. You will notice from the pictures that the ceilings of the unit have exposed beams. There is no insulation in the ceiling and the tropical sun beating down on the roof quickly heats the unit up like an oven. Within an hour of us shutting the windows the temperature in the unit had climbed to 95 degrees (actual thermostat reading ). My wife is 5 months pregnant and this prompted us to go into full crisis mode including my wife sobbing while taking an ice cold shower to try to cool off.

After a series of difficult conversations with the owners and the caretaker, we ultimately were able to get the owners to install an additional AC unit which had not been previously disclosed or installed. They also gave us "permission to leave the AC on during the day". We demanded a full refund, and the owners graciously accepted this offer, and I agreed to give the situation one additional day.

We ultimately stayed for the duration, but found even with all the AC units running full blast, and all window shades drawn, and no one home, the temperature would climb to 85 degrees by 4 in the afternoon every day. It would cool off by bedtime, which allowed us to stay there; albeit uncomfortably.

Owner's Response: We are very sorry these guests were unhappy with the A/C performance during their stay. They arrived during a particularly hot and humid spell. Oahu was being hit by the remnants of a hurricane that had broken up prior to making landfall. Our normal 15MPH tradewinds (the Hawaiian version of A/C) were disrupted for almost 2 weeks until the storms passed. Never once in all of our 5 star reviews has inadequate A/C performance ever been mentioned. BTW, Our property manager Zak is a super person and always responds quickly to guests concerns.
