Guestbook comments from the manager

The Sunshine Cottage was absolutely perfect. I spent a lot of time researching rentals and I couldn't be happier with our choice. I look forward to many more visits. Location - Kailua is the perfect beach town. Wonderful food, gorgeous beaches, friendly locals and amazing golf. The cottage location in Kailua is perfect, walking distance to the beach and the beach park. Convenient parking, walking distance to Kalapawai market, bike & running trails. Accommodations - the cottage is wonderful, everything feels brand new and upgraded. The fully stocked kitchen made cooking at the cottage so easy. The open living space with wifi was so convenient to get a little work done (yes, even on vacation). Washer, dryer, dishwasher, everything you need for an easy, relaxing vacation. Thank you for the wonderful stay!

Beautiful Beach House- Walk to Kailua Beach!!
average rating of 4.9 based on 25 reviews

Absolutely perfect!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage we rented was fantastic. First, the owners and the property manager answered all our questions about the cottage and had many helpful tips about our location, where to shop, eat and recreate. Secondly, the cottage is very roomy, comfortable and clean. A plus also, is that the cottage is located across from a park and that park a fronts the Kailua beach. The Kailua beach is the calmest of all Hawaiian beaches, you won't be disappointed.

Wonderful week!

  • 5 of 5

We just spent a wonderful week in this island home. The house is really a lovely home and everything we needed was there. It was great to get up each morning and head across the street to one of the most beautiful beaches in the world! I enjoyed the decor of the home and the furniture was so interesting and beautiful! The small town atmosphere of Kailua made this our best trip to Hawaii. We thank you for sharing your home with us and would love to return someday.

Great Property, Awesome Location!

  • 5 of 5

If you're going to Oahu and don't need more than one bedroom, this is probably the perfect place for you to stay. Kailua Beach and Park are just idyllic. The beach is long. The sand is soft white powder. The water is pure clean and aquamarine in color. The shady park is a perfect place to hang out after you've had enough sun and surf. There's a village feel to it all - far from the touristy chaos of Waikiki and Honolulu. There are groceries and restaurants close by. This property is right across the street from the beach and park. Together, they make up a slice of heaven that was very difficult to leave.

The home itself is just wonderful - the photos don't lie. If I was at a point in life when I could get by with down-sizing from a big old family home, this would be my choice. (I've made notes so I can duplicate it someday.) The interior is so spacious and well appointed... truly, this place qualifies as a jewel box. The kitchen is outfitted with everything you could need. The bed is c o m f o r t a b l e ! The linens were top quality. The home was wonderfully clean. I keep asking my spouse "Are you sure we can't just retire and try to buy the place?"

Thanks, Marjorie and Zak, for making our visit to Oahu so special. From Kailua, we could get to all the sights and activities quickly. The best part was the property, the house, and the park and beach across the street. Maholo!

Really Nice Stay at Sunshine Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had a great time at Sunshine Cottage a couple of weeks ago! The house is very well appointed, comfortable and stocked with most necessities. The owners have lots of helpful info in their house notebook, and the old Hawaiian things around the house are really cool! The bed was super comfy (although I might recommend a very light comforter with a duvet cover as it seemed we were struggling over the covers a lot), the bedroom nice and dark, and the bathroom/shower are awesome--my dream bathroom, really! Loads of kitchen equipment, and since my husband is a chef, we had two or three nice dinners at home. The beach toys were super handy, and, as most mentioned, the location terrific! Though we spent most of our days at Makapu'u, it was really nice to be close to a beach for morning walks and afternoon/evening swims. The hike nearby (something like top hat, overlooking Lanikai beach???) is great and you can walk out the door and off you go---you can walk for miles on the trail! Definitely hit the farmers markets, and there is info in the house book about those! We had a power-outage one evening, and the property manager and owners were both very big deal, the power was back on in hours, but good to know they are responsible and helpful. Hopefully, we will be back to Sunshine Cottage for a longer stay in the future!

Well Appointed Quaint Seaside Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

No need to continue researching safe accommodations for your visit to the island of Oahu. My research led me to the seaside town of Kailua. Up a private lane through a gated fence, directly to the dutch-door of a quaint cozy cottage! It was the perfect home away from home. Equipped with a full open kitchen suited for any type of cook...or perhaps you are like me, just desiring a beautiful place to pour a nice glass of Merlot while enjoying my beautiful flowers we picked up at the grocery store down the road. After an awesome venture to the North Shore's 2015 Billabong Surfing Masters competition and a visit to beautiful Waimea Valley, it was time to close our first day. The hot shower felt so good. I loved how "I" controlled the water pressure. Ladies, the lighting in the bathroom is perfect. There is even a retractable, magnifying mirror for a closer look at our beauty! I am a solid "morning person", however the king-sized bed is so comfy, I even questioned getting out of it. Then I remembered, I was only steps away from two of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Focused, I brewed our coffee and grabbed a beach chair. It was going to be another wonderful 83 degree day in December. We visited many places. The Macadamia Nut Farm Tour is not to be missed. You'll love it! Try some shrimp at a shrimp farm or stay closer to home and enjoy Buzz's Steakhouse. You won't be disappointed! Eat the fresh fruits of the island. Explore, unwind and enjoy. Don't overpack, use the washer and dryer at the cottage!

Jim and Marjorie, We loved our visit. Your home felt like our home! Please convey our gratitude with Zak. We appreciated his kindness and professionalism. He was very helpful upon our arrival. It was a pleasure meeting Paul and his lovely wife. The evening prior to our departure, we elected to share our perishables with the neighbors next door. What a lovely visit we had! Thank you for the many added touches. The music/cd player, the well equipped kitchen to the table coasters. The detailed Artwork! I am curious regarding the story behind the signed surfboard displayed in the kitchen. Your eye for detail has not gone unnoticed! The many kinds of bed pillows to suit all types of sleepers is brilliant! We were so pleased and felt as though we were visiting family and you know... Family always returns😊 Mahalo for a wonderful "home away" experience!

P.S. We hope you enjoyed the bottle of wine we left for you. It was made in our region.

Owner's Response: Aloha, Thank you so much for taking the time to review our home. We call the Cottage home when we are in Hawaii, and we miss it every day we are away. The Cottage is almost 8 years old now, my sons and brother-in-law helped me build it, my wife and I did the design and furnishing plans. It is built to resemble the old plantation style homes of the 1940's. The artwork is from both local and French artists. Our favorite piece is the painting by Susie Anderson that is hanging over the TV. Most of the 'artifacty' stuff came from Island Treasures in Kailua, our good friend Gayle is the owner and she lives on Lanai'i now - she still commutes and works in the store most days. The surfboard in the kitchen with all the signatures on it was a surprise 60th birthday card/present from my wife Marj and my son Chris.. Kailua will always be 'home' to us. Mahalo for selecting our home to spend your vacation in. A Hui Hou Jim and Marj

Stunning beyond what you would expect

  • 5 of 5

I loved staying at Sunshine Cottage - I look at the photo and miss my Kailua Home!!! If you are discerning in how you live and like a house that has everything for a pleasant and comfortable stay look no further - THIS IS THE PLACE. The house is private, quiet and across the road from Kailua Beach. Immaculate in its presentation there is everything to make a meal and enjoy yourself. The washing machine and dryer are right there as the laundromat is attached. There is a spacious bathroom off the bedroom. Bed is SUPER comfortable - there is a desk in the bedroom and for me that was the icing on the cake - I work remotely and so I had somewhere to put my lap top and hard files etc. without invading the living room space. I was there for a high school reunion and we had lots of visitors - everyone made comment on the house and the decor etc. The owner's taste reflect my own and it was a perfect "fit". Thank you so much for letting us stay in your Hawaii home. I'll be back next year - Kia Ora Kathy from New Zealand!!!
