About Scott or Lynn

Lynn and I live in Northern Virginia and are raising 4 beautiful children. I work in the telecommunications industry and Lynn is a teacher at the local school. We love outdoor activities in the mountains and when not in the mountains we head to the beaches.

Scott or Lynn purchased this house in 2004

Why Scott or Lynn chose West Virginia

Lynn and I purchased the cabin in 2004 looking for a place to bring our kids to ski, bike and get away from the busy day to day world. With the wonderful views, the privacy of the ridge top and the open space of the fields, we have had and still have the best experience when we go to the cabin. We haven't been able to find anything like it in the area.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Amazing Property!

  • 5 of 5

We had a blast on vacation last week at Top of the Ridge Cabin. Scott & Lynn were SO helpful and they are correct when they say in the listing that all you need is your food, drinks and clothing. They have thought of everything and that made our Family Reunion Vacation even that much better. I could not have asked for a better set up and the views are over the top beautiful. The kids also had a great time playing in the treehouse and running around the corn maze! We will be back! Thank you again for EVERYTHING!

An Exciting Adventure

  • 5 of 5

My family and I (11 people in all) stayed on Top of the Ridge when the West Virginia storms hit on June 23, 2016. We had arrived on the 20th and it was an adventure from the start. First off, when the owners say remote, they mean remote. The property is about 2 miles up on a mountain road. The view is spectacular and worth the trek! The home has all the amenities from the outdoor fireplace (my favorite) to the hot tub, fire pit, ping-pong/pool table and the list goes on. We visited the Cass Railroad which is nearby and enjoyed it very much. Snowshoe Resort is also very close.

Unfortunately, on the 23rd around 5 am we experienced the mother of all storms at the top of the ridge. It knocked out the power, uprooted many trees, and barricaded the one and only road to the bottom of the mountain. Considering the force of the storm, the cabin hung on because as the day progressed the rain continued to fall and fall and fall. Fortunately, the Johnson's have a land line phone installed in the home which allowed us to call them and the Fire Department for updates on the flash floods that had developed below us. Despite the loss of power and running water we realized later that being on high ground kept us safer. The roads below us were washed out, a huge sink hole developed at The Ski Barn at the base of the mountain and sadly there was loss of life in the area. We found a fully charged battery for jumping cars in the garage that allowed us to run 2 lamps all night. The gas stove, propane grill and outdoor fireplace allowed us to prepare meals and our vacation became an adventure we will never forget.

Although we pray to God that nobody else will ever have to experience what we did on vacation, we thank God that we had Scott Johnson looking out for us when it did. He kept in touch with power outage updates and offered us the use of any supplies we could find in the house to keep us safe and comfortable. You will not find a better homeowner to deal with. We highly recommend this beautiful property.

Perfect setting for our family gathering!

  • 5 of 5

West Virginia is a central location for us and our 3 (grown) children, so it made sense to look for a house or cabin large enough to hold all of us comfortably, and "Top of the Ridge" fit the bill. With 3 "master" bedrooms (and a 4th room with twins that can be combined into a larger bed) this is a great house for several couples or a family to rent. Each of the large bedrooms has a bathroom and shower adjacent, so even if you have little people running around, there are convenient toilets!

The kitchen is very well equipped with everything we needed to prepare all our meals, with even a bread maker. (Which we used!) The dining table is huge! The great room has abundant seating and room to hold a dozen or more people easily, yet is cozy for just 2. There is a lovely gas fireplace in the great room, a wood fireplace on the fantastic deck, and a large fire pit set off a bit from the house if you want a bonfire. And there was a LOT of wood provided.

The view from the deck is beautiful, and was the favorite place to sit and read, or visit for nearly everyone in our group. There is a large grassy yard, and a maze cut into the mostly wild field bordering the yard. The kids had lots of fun exploring out there.

We couldn't have found a better setting to come all together!

Nice property, Clean, spacious enough, but cozy, private, beautiful views!!

  • 5 of 5

We had wonderful stay here, Scott was very responsive to emails, if I had a question he would usually get back to me within 1 hours time or so!!! Also we did have a little trouble with the hot tub, but after I sent him an email, he called me within 20 mins and we got a solution worked out, he was very nice to work with!! I would totally recommend this cabin... It has a nice amount of bathrooms and bedrooms to accommodate the living space... If you are into mountain biking, there is an awesome trail, (you have to be a little adventurous to get to the best part, but it is totally worth it) it starts out as the Road that goes past the end of the lane, and if you just keep following that road you will get to a meadow like opening, about 2 miles up, then there Is a grass trail (possibly an old logging trail) that takes off of that and keeps going another 3 miles on up, untill you claw your way up a steep grassy peak, that gives you an astounding, breathtaking 360 degree view of the mountains of WV it took us 3 guys about 3 hrs or so of hard riding to get to it, but once we did we were satisfied to go home and relaxe some more!!! Thanks for all the effort you put into your cabin an also for sharing it with us all Scott!!!

I could write a book describing how nice our stay was. We were a party of 4 adults and 5 children ranging in ages from 57 to 4 years old. This home fit all our needs. The outdoor fireplace was perfect for the adults with some wine and we all enjoyed the hot tub after a day of skiing and tubing. One day we stayed in and all the kids built igloos and tunnels all over the huge flat yard. Amazon even showed up with towels and dish liquid:) I highly recommend this property for anyone wanting to spend time with family and friends while being within a short distance from the slopes.

Comfortable, Great Views, They've Thought of Everything!

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 9 plus 4 kids (age 3 months to 6 years) had a great time in this house! From Scott and Lynn's good communications prior to the stay (although the packet of paper information would have been better sent via email), to the cleanliness of the house when we arrived, we knew we were in for a great stay. They seem to have thought of everything, from little things like additional towel hooks by the hot tub, to lots of games and entertainment, to the 3 fireplaces, and the unexpected like a car battery jumper in the garage (which we fortunately did not need). The beds were comfortable, the house was quiet enough that nobody woke up when the 3 month old woke up in the middle of the night, and the pellet stove in the basement does a great job of keeping it warm enough down there. The hot tub worked well and there were sufficient bathrooms. Realistically the drive to the summit of Snowshoe is about 25 mins. Thanks again! We've stayed in many homes on and off mountain near Snowshoe and this was one of the best we've been to.

Nearest Airport
100 Miles
Charleston, WV
Car: necessary

The house sits on a ridge next to Snowshoe Resort. A community road winds its way to the Top of the Ridge cabin taking you high above the main roads. This is a very private location with an open field and plenty of space to enjoy the outdoors. If you see anyone during your stay at the Top of the Ridge that would be unusual.

The Top of the Ridge Cabin is ideally suited for those vacationers that want privacy after a day of skiing or other activity at Snowshoe, or for those groups that half want to ski and half want to snuggle beside the fire.
