About Scott or Lynn

Lynn and I live in Northern Virginia and are raising 4 beautiful children. I work in the telecommunications industry and Lynn is a teacher at the local school. We love outdoor activities in the mountains and when not in the mountains we head to the beaches.

Scott or Lynn purchased this house in 2004

Why Scott or Lynn chose West Virginia

Lynn and I purchased the cabin in 2004 looking for a place to bring our kids to ski, bike and get away from the busy day to day world. With the wonderful views, the privacy of the ridge top and the open space of the fields, we have had and still have the best experience when we go to the cabin. We haven't been able to find anything like it in the area.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We just wanted to say thank you. We had an amazing time. Your house was wonderful as always. We look forward to renting from you next year.

Ideal for so many reasons

  • 5 of 5

We originally desired to have a small outdoor wedding at this location in the fall which would have been perfect! However we ended having to move the wedding up and staying closer to home so we decided to have our honeymoon at the cabin. We did invite a number of guests to stay with us for the first night and everyone just thought the cabin was perfect. A few guests had stayed at other cabins in the area but said this property was by far, the best they had seen yet. Everything you need is pretty much provided, except food... but they do have tons of seasonings! We pretty much wanted for nothing. I would only recommend that travelers bring a cooler to stop for food along the way because it is not a quick trip to town. Everyone in town is quite friendly by the way.

There are so many activities at the property that you always have something to do from indoor board games, ping pong/pool, horseshoes, hot tub, tether ball, tv, etc. Around the area we hiked, and fished but there is also over 500,000 acres for pubic hunting nearby. Wished we could have been here in the fall - so we may just have to come back with our hunting crew! There are many sights to catch nearby as well which made for nice day trips.

We were also very fortunate to be able to catch a meteor shower during our stay which was so delightful because there is almost no light pollution which made for an amazing viewing.

Highly recommended. Hope to return.

Absolutely beautiful

  • 5 of 5

I've never been in a rental where everything was included - so many games, logs for the fire, propane for the grill, even a battery charger and tire pump - just in case. Great stereo and TV. Lots of room and things to do for a large gathering.

Best Vacation Ever!

  • 5 of 5

Top of the Ridge Cabin lives up to all its promises and then some. We’ve rented many cabins over the years and this was the best. Not just slapped together to make money. The cabin is extremely well maintained with all fully functioning appliances and a small Laundromat in the basement with 2 washers and 2 dryers. It’s stocked with enough cookware and dishes to serve an army. The beds were very comfortable and the bathroom towels were better than I have at home. I was touched that there were even pet bowls for food and water. We brought 3 ATVs and found endless riding on logging trails past the cabin. There’s a large library of movies and games and in the dresser in the dining room you’ll find books on anything an adult or child could want to read about. There’s even a piano that was remarkably in tune with only one sticking B key. In the garage there’s a ton of games for outside in addition to the game room downstairs. If you venture out be sure to visit Bear Town and Cranberry Glades walking trails. We also enjoyed tubing down the river. In the evenings though the best thing was lounging in the hot tub and then topping it off with a fire on the deck.

If you’re looking to get a little off the grid and possibly see the mama bear and 3 cubs we saw yet stay in the lap of luxury this is the place for you. Beautiful cabin, owner that responds within ½ hour if you have questions and views that are breathtaking. Thank you Scott. It was well worth the money and I highly recommend Top of the Ridge Cabin.

Amazing Property!

  • 5 of 5

We had a blast on vacation last week at Top of the Ridge Cabin. Scott & Lynn were SO helpful and they are correct when they say in the listing that all you need is your food, drinks and clothing. They have thought of everything and that made our Family Reunion Vacation even that much better. I could not have asked for a better set up and the views are over the top beautiful. The kids also had a great time playing in the treehouse and running around the corn maze! We will be back! Thank you again for EVERYTHING!

An Exciting Adventure

  • 5 of 5

My family and I (11 people in all) stayed on Top of the Ridge when the West Virginia storms hit on June 23, 2016. We had arrived on the 20th and it was an adventure from the start. First off, when the owners say remote, they mean remote. The property is about 2 miles up on a mountain road. The view is spectacular and worth the trek! The home has all the amenities from the outdoor fireplace (my favorite) to the hot tub, fire pit, ping-pong/pool table and the list goes on. We visited the Cass Railroad which is nearby and enjoyed it very much. Snowshoe Resort is also very close.

Unfortunately, on the 23rd around 5 am we experienced the mother of all storms at the top of the ridge. It knocked out the power, uprooted many trees, and barricaded the one and only road to the bottom of the mountain. Considering the force of the storm, the cabin hung on because as the day progressed the rain continued to fall and fall and fall. Fortunately, the Johnson's have a land line phone installed in the home which allowed us to call them and the Fire Department for updates on the flash floods that had developed below us. Despite the loss of power and running water we realized later that being on high ground kept us safer. The roads below us were washed out, a huge sink hole developed at The Ski Barn at the base of the mountain and sadly there was loss of life in the area. We found a fully charged battery for jumping cars in the garage that allowed us to run 2 lamps all night. The gas stove, propane grill and outdoor fireplace allowed us to prepare meals and our vacation became an adventure we will never forget.

Although we pray to God that nobody else will ever have to experience what we did on vacation, we thank God that we had Scott Johnson looking out for us when it did. He kept in touch with power outage updates and offered us the use of any supplies we could find in the house to keep us safe and comfortable. You will not find a better homeowner to deal with. We highly recommend this beautiful property.

The house sits on a ridge next to Snowshoe Resort. A community road winds its way to the Top of the Ridge cabin taking you high above the main roads. This is a very private location with an open field and plenty of space to enjoy the outdoors. If you see anyone during your stay at the Top of the Ridge that would be unusual.

The Top of the Ridge Cabin is ideally suited for those vacationers that want privacy after a day of skiing or other activity at Snowshoe, or for those groups that half want to ski and half want to snuggle beside the fire.
