Bask in the afternoon sunlight, spectacular sunsets, and views of the water from the West-facing dining room and living rooms. A large grassy front lawn which also overlooks the water is the perfect location for outdoor dining, and a sandy area separated from the water provides a wealth of activities for adults and children alike, from horseshoes to building sandcastles. Grill fresh local seafood and corn on the cob as you take in the views of the Bay and the Elizabeth Islands.
The master bedroom is a new addition with cathedral ceilings, skylight, and ceiling fan. It also features a Queen sized bed and new dresser, nightstand, and armoire. Gloria and her family purchased this property when the two older children were ages 1 and 2. They lived here year-round for many years, and then summered on West Island after the two younger children were born. Over the years, the family has made renovations to the home, which now includes a larger master bedroom and a spacious new bathroom. While Gloria's children are grown and living near Providence and Boston, they still come back to West Island every summer with their own children to enjoy the ocean and the activities of their childhood. They also enjoy ocean kayaking and biking on West Island and they moor their boats at Earl's Marina on Causeway Road, which links West island to Mainland Fairhaven.
Gloria Nerney purchased this cottage in 1970
The location is great. The beach on the property is rocky, but there is a sand bar a few feet from shore. Water shoes are a good idea. We went to the town beach and it was also wonderful. Gloria the owner is a wonderful friendly woman that will bend over backwards to make your vacation a delight. The outdoor shower comes I handy for beach returns when you are covered on sand and salt. The ocean breezes keep it cool, but there are a few AC units in windows in case you need them. The only drawback is no cable TV. Only local stations. She does have lots of DVDs and even VHS and board games. Sometimes it's nice to get away from watching TV. Wireless is available too kelp in touch with FB and twitter.
Such a wonderful experience. We flew in from the West coast and everything was smooth and as expected. The owner was very sweet and flexible while thinking of every need for our stay. She even checked in to make sure all was well a couple days into our stay.
The kids loved the beach right out the back door and the people of West Island are very friendly.
Thank you for such great memories!
My wife and I stayed here for our honeymoon and had an absolutely wonderful time. Gloria is incredibly accommodating and will make sure your stay on the island is perfect.
From the screened-in ocean view living room (wonderful breeze & view!) to the beautiful kitchen, the spacious bedrooms to the free-of-charge BBQ, and the quiet ocean-side location to the proximity to Fairhaven & New Bedford, this was a perfect choice for our honeymoon. The private beach was wonderful for sitting on and watching/listening to the ocean and for having an ocean-side campfire, though it is not ideal for swimming due to the thousands of shells making up the shore. That really didn't matter though as Gloria will provide you with a pass to the island's residents-only sandy (and very private) beach which is a 2 minute drive away. The location is excellent; it's close enough to do and see everything in the area, but far enough away that it's quiet and peaceful.
If you're looking to sit back and relax, this is the perfect place to do just that. We would absolutely love to go back some day.
Sunbathe and swim from your own private beach while your children collect rocks, shells, and discover the ocean wildlife in the low tide sandbar of this protected bayside beach. Explore nearby pristine wooded conservation land via nature trails which lead to hidden beaches and coves. Grill dinner, relax, and soak in the sunset at the end of the day from this westward facing beachfront cottage.
