Loved the location . . .

  • 5 of 5

My family (2 adults, 2 teenagers, 2 younger children) stayed here. The house is in a great location, very close to downtown St. Joe and the lake, as we wanted to be able to walk to the beach and into town and did not have to cross any busy streets (Main St.) to get to either. We liked the setup of the house, as the 1st and 2nd floors each had a bathroom with a shower or bath, and the 2nd floor even had its own small kitchen with sink and refrigerator. The 2 teenagers stayed upstairs and it was like their own private apartment! The downstairs was spacious enough to have all 6 of us to eat together in the dining room. It was nice to have 2 spaces to park off street as we brought 2 vehicles. There is no back yard, but we didn't have a problem with that as we spent our time outside at the beautiful Silver Beach, downtown St. Joe, or doing other activities like horseback riding, mini golfing and go karting. I recommend this property for rent and would stay again.

Location is good, accommodations average.

I was disappointed to find that the owner has not invested in better furnishings and improved bathrooms. The showers were hardly functional, with the heads clogged with inline debris and very low water pressure. Lack of counters in baths made it very difficult for the gals. Kitchen also marginally furnished. Upstairs rooms okay for kids, but not for adults.

Without the location, home would be tough to rent at current rate.

Owner's Response: This review came from an off-season renter who rented for a special occasion week-end. Our property is specifically set-up as a summer rental for vacations by the lake. Comfortable, attractive, and appropriate furnishing are provided to enhance one's relaxing stay. Renters are usually families with children, so bunk beds and twin beds are also provided. There are a comfortable king size and queen size bed provided for the adults. The bathrooms are small, not allowing much room for counter space. However, the bedrooms have mirrors and dressers which provide addition space for any needed preparations for the day. The upstairs bathroom was renovated in 2014 and a new vanity was added to the downstairs bathroom in the same year. It was decided to leave the downstairs bathroom tile as is, to preserve the 1920's vintage style and design. The kitchen downstairs is equipped with all one might need for cooking and/or baking and setting an inviting table. There are minimal, but adequate, kitchen supplies upstairs as renters usually cook and eat together in the larger downstairs kitchen and dining area. The cleaning crew, who came following this renter, stated that the water pressure was "great." I have learned that if the city has been working in the area the water pressure can be decreased for a period of time. For whatever reason for the mentioned decreased water pressure, it has now been remedied.

Fun family getaway

  • 5 of 5

We've been renting this house for 3 years now, and we're already signed up for next summer. Overall, this is a nice house with plenty of space, in good shape, and has a great location adjacent to downtown (only a 5 minute walk to the beach). It is a reasonable price for the area as well. The owners are very pleasant, organized and prompt in communications. The house is always clean and in good shape when we arrive. We look forward to our time in St. Joseph each year.

Comfortable, well located home!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at your home. The home was clean and comfortable. We had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable. We were in St. Joseph with my daughter and her family. We stayed downstairs and they used the upstairs. My daughter said it was like having their own apartment. We walked everywhere and the kids loved it! A very nice week!

Not for us...

  • 2 of 5

My family stayed at the Little Cottage by the Sea in early June 2015. We enjoyed the small town feel and proximity to the beach and downtown. Chris was responsive when booking the house, I asked a few questions about the layout of the home because we had small children traveling with us. Chris did explain that the upstairs bedrooms didn’t have doors except for at the top of the stairs. Noise between floors would not be an issue. She did fail to explain the stairs are very steep and not recommended for elderly or young children.

I didn’t ask but there was no description about the yard. Unfortunately there is no yard so that is something to consider.

We are giving the home a low review for a couple of reasons. The first is the beds are very uncomfortable and the home could have been cleaner (the kitchen ceiling was covered in dust). The second was the first floor had very limited cable channels (including cartoons and ESPN). We did mention this in passing with the owners, just so they were aware if they were paying for additional channels. The third there were several issues with plumbing in the home. The owner came promptly to try and fix the drain but then had to call a plumber. The plumber didn’t show up until after the agreed upon time. We had small children sleeping and the plumber said the machines he uses are loud (we were never informed they would use load machines to fix the issues) so we had to turn him away. The plumber returned later the next day, which meant we had dishes piled up. On the last day of our stay the faucet in the kitchen broke and water was spraying everywhere. It was a hassle to get packed up in a timely manner. We weren’t able to unload the dishwasher before we left, the cleaning lady told us it was no problem she would unload it. Well, the owners took $50 from our deposit to pay for the additional cost of unloading the dishwasher. Wow, they hired an expensive housekeeper!

I emailed the owner, Chris, about the $50 charge. In the end she agreed to send an additional $25 back to me but also wrote a nasty note asking that we don’t return to her home. I guess fixing an old houses plumbing issues is too much to ask a landlord. We have rented from many other homeowners for vacations before and have never had an issue with any until now. I caution the next renters.

Owner's Response: After 10 years of renting our cottage this is the only negative review we have had. We have many renters who return year after year, most of them with small children. ESPN was available to be watched by the renters on the upstairs TV, but they could not get it on the downstairs TV. As soon as I heard this, I called the cable company and was told how this could be remedied, which I relayed to the renters. The renters called another day about a clogged drain in the kitchen downstairs (there are two kitchens, one upstairs and one downstairs) both kitchen drains were working well when renters moved in. I immediately called a plumber and was told they could not get to us until that evening and it would cost an extra $100.00 to get a plumber out after business hours, which I agreed to pay. When the plumber called again to say it would be later at night, I called the renters again to ask if that was Ok. They responded that it would be OK. When the plumber arrived, the renter's children were asleep, so the renters sent the plumber away. The plumber returned in the morning and fixed the drain, still charging me the extra $100.00. The plumber mentioned to me that when he did the job the renter said, "That wasn't very loud." The plumber told the renter that if he had come the night before and they had sent him away, he would have charged them an extra $150.00 of their own money. He said the renter was very rude to him when he told her this. The rental instructions are very clear as to check-out time and how the cottage is to be left. The renters left late and the dishwasher was still running and dishes not put away, as indicated in the rental instructions. (there was 24 hours between plumber fix and move-out) I gave the $50.00 I charged the renters to the cleaning girl. I have never had a complaint before about cleanliness! The kitchen ceiling is a "popcorn" ceiling and they tend to collect dust, no matter how often they are cleaned. The spraying issue was fixed immediately and did not hinder renters move out. When the renter wrote me a note, accusing me of taking the $50.00 off her deposit because I had to pay the plumber, I wrote her back offering to send her back $25.00, but that I felt the $50.00 was fair for the cleaning girl. She wrote me again telling me to send the $25.00, which I did. I kindly asked the renters to rent elsewhere because of their rudenessI have had 2 week's of renters since, with not one complaint!
