Tropical Rainforest Mountain House Near Volcano Arenal. Private and Safe.

Bedrooms 2
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Enchanting 2 BR, 1 BA Rainforest Mountain House

Your own Costa Rican private hilltop house located 25 minutes from the town of La Fortuna and Volcano Arenal. This beautiful retreat is about 2 and 1/2 hours from San Jose (main airport) and about 3 hours from the Pacific beaches. This well-built and locally decorated home sits on a hill overlooking its own tropical fruit and flower garden. Just beyond the exotic garden are beautiful horse pastures, a whitewater river and the jungle of the federally protected Children’s Eternal Rainforest which offers endless hiking trails and birding opportunities. Wake up to the magical sounds of the Costa Rican Rain forest (howler monkeys, gentle rain, and the songs of over 123 species of birds seen on-site). Brew a pot of locally grown fresh Costa Rican Café, and step out onto the large deck to enjoy the 270° view and lounge in one of the 2 hammocks provided.

This house is very peaceful and remote yet it has the wonderful feature of being within walking distance to the ecotourist destination Chachagua Rainforest Hotel. This unique setting offers total privacy with all the comforts of a first class lodge. The conveniences offered by the hotel include: English-speaking staff on property at all times, cell phones in case of emergencies, night watchman, laundry, restaurant serving delicious local Costa Rican cuisine, fully stocked bar, beautiful outdoor swimming pool, massage therapists, tropical gardens,, access to rain forest hiking trails, rental horses and tours. We consider this to be the best of both worlds: the security and convenience of a hotel yet the quiet remoteness of a private home.

The house has 2 bedrooms. The master bedroom has a nice queen size bed and its own porch with superb views. The guest bedroom has two beds, one double and one twin.

There is 1 bathroom with beautiful private shower that overlooks rain forest. Colorful hand painted murals cover three of the walls within the house and illustrate forest scenes (done by a talented local artist). There is a great kitchen with all the tools to cook a healthy meal. There is also a family room that opens up to the best porch in the world. The house is an awesome place to relax. Guests can spend countless days just sitting in the hammocks, eating fresh fruit and watching the toucans, parrots, hummingbirds and countless birds that visit the garden at the house.

Over the past 10 years we have planted many fruit trees. Fruits include mangos, oranges, figs, coconuts, rambatans (chinese leechis), guanabanas, tamarindos, bananas, plantains, limes, water apple, coffee, and cacao (chocolate). All ov which is available to you when it is ripe!

Not only is the house a great place to chill out, but it is in an ideal location to use as a home base when you go on adventures.

Things to do in close by La Fortuna are:

Watch lava flow from the crater of Volcano Arenal (one of the most picturesque volcanoes), visit a 100ft waterfall (Catarata La Fortuna), bathe in natural hot springs, fish and windsurf on Lake Arenal, whitewater raft, explore the Volcano Arenal National Park, take a wildlife/bird tour to Cano Negro, go on a caving tour, dine at many restaurants, dance at the local discothèque (Volcan Look), get cool souvenirs, get money from an ATM, or use the internet. Also, you are less then a 4 hour drive to a variety of nice beaches on the Pacific coasts as well as the enchanting cloud forests of Monte Verde. The Caribbean coast is only about 5 hours away.

Why The Owner chose Alajuela Province

I fell in love with this house on my visit this spring and ended up buying it, I am continuing to rent it and have the same delightful caretakers as the prior owner. There is a lot to do and see in the area. Unfortunately when I took over the listing all the info and good reviews got blocked out but there is a book with information and reviews by previous visitors in the house.

We had a great stay

We had a great stay, location was amazing, and use of the Eco lodge was very nice. House could use some upkeep though.

A Birder's Dream!

  • 5 of 5

For two retired couples on a month long birding tour of Costa Rica, this place was the perfect place to spend four days! The deck overlooks a tree-studded hillside and the birds readily come to the fruit feeders mounted on the deck railing. Even though there is an eco-lodge (that can't be seen from the deck) at the bottom of the the hill that offers access to a fine restaurant and hiking trails, we enjoyed the serenity of this isolated cabin. The internet worked fine, the rooms were comfortable and the kitchen was well appointed. The drive into Fortuna was not that bad and a good supermarket was on the edge of town. While a four-wheel drive is not necessary, good clearance is a good idea for the last rocky 100 meters up to the driveway. This a very small negative compared to the many pluses of this great rental.

Wonderful place to relax

  • 5 of 5

We all loved it and wish we could stay longer. The place is so beautiful inside and out. It looks even nicer than the photos show and was really clean. Also we really appreciated that the lobby staff were helpful and set us up with what we needed. It was nice to be outside of La Fortuna because apart from all the natural animal sounds it was so quiet and peaceful. A 4x4 was nice for the last 200 metres or so. Everything we needed from towels to plenty of cookware and other extras.

Rainforest and Birds!

  • 5 of 5

Two couples stayed for three nights. We loved watching the birds and looking out over the Chachagua Rainforest.

The folks at the Ecolodge were great, new owners ten months ago and it feels like they are spiffing things up! We took a morning hike with a lodge guide and it was free. He later took us on a river walk through the jungle to a waterfall. Very fun! We had happy hour and dinner twice at the lodge and the food was very good.

We had planned to go into La Fortuna one day, but opted to enjoy where we were instead, in the forest.

Oh, we missed the house to get the key, and sure you are clear on this!:)

My fiance and I stayed at this rainforest house for 5 nights in December. It was very peaceful and surrounded by wildlife. There is no TV or internet but we loved the tranquility. The people at the hotel were super nice and easy to talk to. We booked a few excursions through them and ate at their restaurant one night which was delicious!

The bed was super comfortable and it was quiet at night.

It is about a 15 minute drive down a very bumpy rocky road until you get to the main road and then about another 20 minutes into La Fortuna/Arenal so sometimes it was a bit far going back and forth but the house is really beautiful and we loved it!

Wonderful area away from all the tourists

  • 5 of 5

This was a family vacation for us - myself, my two boys (ages 16 & 20) and my sister. This was the perfect place in the perfect location. The hotel nearby is a great addition. The house is remote enough to not be caught up in the hustle and bustle yet not so remote that it was difficult to get to. We booked all our day trips through the staff at the hotel (which was less expensive than booking them online ourselves) plus the staff was very helpful in giving recommendations and helpful information. The restaurant has a great staff and delicious food and very inexpensive. It was great to come back to the house after dinner to just relax after a day of fun. There are cards and numerous games at the house so we just kicked back on the deck every evening with a few drinks and many laughs while playing games. This is what a vacation means to us...a chance to just hang out and reconnect while taking a break from our normally hectic lives. Ute is great about responding quickly and answering all your questions.
